    Non-profit Fundraising Event Plan

    Presented to the Faculty of the University of Alaska Anchorage in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCEThis project conducts applied research through a fundraising project for the Alaska Institute for Justice (AIJ). Founded in 2005, AIJ is a non-profit agency that provides legal services to immigrants and refugees. It represents people fleeing persecution in their home countries as well as domestic violence and human trafficking crime victims. It provides the only low-fee services of its kind in the state, helping community members who are often isolated, low-income, vulnerable to abuse, and with few other avenues to gain legal representation. AIJ also operates a statewide language interpreter center that provides immigrant and refugee expertise to numerous state and federal agencies dedicated to health care, social services, and law enforcement. The AIJ fundraising project will analyze the effectiveness of project management tools used during planning and execution of a new fundraiser event plan. The project will also apply literature reviews and interviews to assess AIJ’s and other mature Anchorage area non-profits’ familiarity with project management tools and to provide recommended project management tools to improve organizational efficiency. The project’s products include an event plan that consists of immigrant speaker performances and a silent auction. The deliverables are an event checklist and continuity documents to help AIJ repeat this fundraising event annually.     From Davydov solitons to decoherence-free subspaces: self-consistent propagation of coherent-product states

    The self-consistent propagation of generalized D1D_{1} [coherent-product] states and of a class of gaussian density matrix generalizations is examined, at both zero and finite-temperature, for arbitrary interactions between the localized lattice (electronic or vibronic) excitations and the phonon modes. It is shown that in all legitimate cases, the evolution of D1D_{1} states reduces to the disentangled evolution of the component D2D_{2} states. The self-consistency conditions for the latter amount to conditions for decoherence-free propagation, which complement the D2D_{2} Davydov soliton equations in such a way as to lift the nonlinearity of the evolution for the on-site degrees of freedom. Although it cannot support Davydov solitons, the coherent-product ansatz does provide a wide class of exact density-matrix solutions for the joint evolution of the lattice and phonon bath in compatible systems. Included are solutions for initial states given as a product of a [largely arbitrary] lattice state and a thermal equilibrium state of the phonons. It is also shown that external pumping can produce self-consistent Frohlich-like effects.     INFLUENCE OF THE FOOTBALL BOOT DESIGN ON SHOCK ABSORPTION

    INTRODUCTION: A number of studies about the importance of sports shoe design on injuries prevention have been published in late years (Masson, 1989;Stacoff, 1988). Epidemiological studies indicate that football has special relevance with relation to suffering injuries (Hoff,1986; Ydes, 1990). During the practice of football a number of movement patterns such as jumping or running are performed(Reilly, 1976), being shock absorption a basic criterion for the design of footwear in Worts where such movement patterns occur. To improve the shock absorption of footwear two strategies are often adopted: to potentiate the natural mechanisms by means Of a better the tissue heel Or to increase the shock absorption capability of the footwear appropriately selecting the materials of the sole and insole. The aim the study was to evaluate the effect which different boot designs and different sole and insole materials had on load transMission during running. Based on a preliminary study, 3 boot prototypes and 4 insole prototypes were made. 8healthy football players were selected and they performed 6 runs with each of the 12possible combinations of boot/insole. The runs were performed in a football field and a speed of 4 m/s was determined controlled by electric photocells. The sequence of each condition was randomized for each subject. The subjects were instrumented with 2 accelerometers, attached to their skin by means of a strong bandage on tibia and forehead. The signals from the accelerometers were connected to a telemetry equipment which allowed the subject freer movements. With parameters obtained, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was made. The level of significance chosen was of alfa < 0.05. To analyze the differences between conditions, an LSD test was made. RESULTS: One of the viscoelastic materials inserted in the insole offered a mean reduction of impacts of about 6%.One of' the materials of the boot sole showed a better capability of shock absorption, about 7%. The boots to which a special compartment for the heel pad did not improve shock absorption. Acceleration measured at tibia was of 6.01+0.06 times gravity (g) and at head it was of 2.45+2g.CONCLUSION: According to the results, an appropriate selection of insole and boot materials an improvement of shock absorption of 13% can be obtained. Although the tests were made on a natural grass football field and the speed of run was not too high, the values found for both tibia and forehead were high: this fact confirms the hypothesis that shock absorption is a basic criterion in the design of football boots from the point of view of protection from injuries.     Different regulation of haloperoxidation during agar oligosaccharide-activated defence mechanisms in two related red algae

    The related red seaweeds Gracilaria sp. from the eastern Mediterranean and Gracilaria chilensis from Chile were similar in their enzymatic inventory for halogenation. In both species, halogenation was dependent upon H(2)O(2) and thus driven by haloperoxidases. These could be inhibited with phosphate and reversibly inhibited with azide and were therefore apparently dependent upon vanadate. Both species generated in the first line bromoform and other brominated halocarbons. Gel electrophoresis under non-denaturating conditions demonstrated that both species expressed halogenating peroxidases. Elicitation of Gracilaria sp. with agar oligosaccharides resulted in marked increases in bromination, iodination, and chlorination. Production rates of volatile halocarbons and phenol red bromination both increased by a factor of eight, presumably due to increased availability for haloperoxidases of H(2)O(2) during the oxidative burst response. Elicitation of Gracilaria sp. also triggered a release of bromide ions through DIDS-sensitive anion channels, which allowed for some bromination in bromide-free medium. However, this effect was relatively limited. By contrast, agar oligosaccharide oxidation in G. chilensis did not increase halogenation. Obviously, agar oligosaccharide oxidation does not provide sufficient amounts of hypohalous acids for such increases, because it does not deliver H(2)O(2) at the active site of vanadium-dependent haloperoxidases. These results correlate with earlier findings that the agar oligosaccharide-elicited oxidative burst controls microorganisms while agar oligosaccharide oxidation does not

    Trifoliata hybrids rootstocks for 'Lane Late' navel orange in Spain

    Carrizo citrange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb. × Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf.] and Cleopatra mandarin (C. reshni Hort. ex Tan.) are the most important rootstocks used in Spain, but they are problematic and it is necessary to search for new rootstocks with better all-round performance. The performance of 'Lane Late' navel orange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb] on ten rootstocks was determined in the South of the province of Alicante (Spain). They are Carrizo citrange, Cleopatra mandarin and eight new hybrids obtained at the Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Agrarias in Valencia (Spain): 020324 [Troyer citrange (C. sinensis × P. trifoliata) × Cleopatra mandarin], Forner-Alcaide 418 (F&A 418) [Troyer citrange × common mandarin (C. deliciosa Ten.)], Forner-Alcaide 13 (F&A 13), 030118, 030127 and 030131 (Cleopatra mandarin × P. trifoliata) and 030212 and 030230 (Cleopatra mandarin × Troyer citrange). Soil is clay loam, with pH 8.5 and electric conductivity in the saturation extract at 25ºC of 5.79 mS cm-1. Yield was weighed during the first nine harvests, fruit quality was determined in the last three. Pre-harvest fruit-drop was controlled for the 4th until 9th harvests. The trees of 'Lane Late' navel budded on Cleopatra mandarin were the tallest (2.5 m) and F&A 418 (1.6 m) the shortest of all rootstocks tested. Trees on 030131 hybrid and Carrizo citrange rootstocks had the highest mean yield (81.2 and 80.3 kg per tree per year respectively), while trees on F&A 418 produced the lowest mean yield (22.3 kg per tree per year). Trees on 030131, 020324 and 030212 had the highest yield efficiency as total cumulative yield per cubic meter of canopy volume (62.1, 58.7 and 55.9 kg m-3 respectively) whereas trees on 030127, F&A 418 and Cleopatra mandarin had lower yield efficiencies (45.0, 44.4 and 38.6 kg m-3, respectively). Pre-harvest fruit-drop was lower in trees grafted on Cleopatra mandarin (24.62 %) and on 030212 (26.61 %), and was also low on F&A 418 (27.76 %), 020324 (28.14 %) and 030230 (29.18 %) rootstocks. Trees on Carrizo citrange and 030127 experienced important fruit-drop (40.24 % and 38.27 % respectively). Trees on F&A 418 had the highest fruit weight and fruit size whereas trees on 030118 induced the lowest ones.     Experimental validation of a fast-tracking FOCV-MPPT circuit for a wave energy converter embedded into an oceanic drifter

    Wave Energy Converters (WECs) are an ideal solution for expanding the autonomy of surface sensor platforms such as oceanic drifters. To extract the maximum amount of energy from these fast-varying sources, a fast maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique is required. Previous studies have examined power management units (PMU) with fast MPPT circuits, but none of them have demonstrated their feasibility in a real-world scenario. In this study, the performance of a fast-tracking fractional open circuit voltage (FOCV)-MPPT circuit (sampling period TMPPT of 48 ms) is compared with a commercial slow-tracking PMU (TMPPT of 16 s) in a monitored sea area while using a small-scale, pendulum-type WEC. A specific low-power relaxation oscillator circuit is designed to control the fast MPPT circuit.     Identificação do gene pccB A partir da varredura de uma biblioteca genômica de Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis visando uma vacina contra linfadenite caseosa.

    Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis é o agente etiológico da linfadenite caseosa (LC), que acomete principalmente ovinos e caprinos. Esta doença é causadora de grandes problemas na ovinocaprinocultura. Diversas pesquisas tem sido realizadas na busca de uma vacina eficaz contra a LC. Estudos recentes utilizando um gene reporter em C. pseudotuberculosis, identificou a expressão do gene pccB (cadeia &#946; da propionil CoA carboxilase) em macrófagos, indicando um possível envolvimento na virulência deste patógeno e um bom antígeno a ser explorado no desenvolvimento de uma nova estratégia vacinal. Como a sequência deste gene ainda não está disponível em banco de dados, o objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar varredura em uma biblioteca genômica de C. pseudotuberculosis para identificação completa da sequência do gene pccB. Uma sonda foi gerada a partir de um fragmento parcial do gene pccB marcado com [&#945;32P]dCTP. A biblioteca genômica foi plaqueada em placas de lise para obter 2X103 pfu/placa e em seguida transferida para membranas de nylon previamente tratadas com soluções desnaturante, neutralizante e de pré-hibridização, a fim de, posteriormente, reagir com a sonda radioativa seguido da exposição das membranas a um filme de raio X. Dois clones positivos foram isolados e utilizados como template em reação de PCR, utilizando primers específicos da biblioteca genômica, gerando produtos de 3 Kb que foram sequenciados e analisados por BlastX, verificando-se 82% de identidade com o gene pccB2 de C. diphtheriae. Acreditando que haja sintenia entre as duas espécies mencionadas, foram desenhados primers com genes que flanqueiam o gene pccB2 de C. diphtheriae. Esses foram utilizados como iniciadores em reação de PCR, tendo como molde o DNA genômico de C. Pseudotuberculosis, gerando um fragmento de 2,1 Kb que foi clonado no vetor pGEM-T easy, sequenciado e analisado por BlastX. Resultados preliminares indicam que novos primers precisam ser desenhados para concluir a sequência deste gene
