    A Versatile Active Block: DXCCCII and Tunable Applications

    The study describes dual-X controlled current conveyor (DXCCCII) as a versatile active block and its application to inductance simulators for testing. Moreover, the high pass filter application using with DXCCCII based inductance simulator and oscillator with flexible tunable oscillation frequency have been presented and simulated to confirm the theoretical validity. The proposed circuit which has a simple circuit design requires the low-voltage and the DXCCCII can also be tuned in the wide range by the biasing current. The proposed DXCCCII provides a good linearity, high output impedance at Z terminals, and a reasonable current and voltage transfer gain accuracy. The proposed DXCCCII and its applications have been simulated using the CMOS 0.18 µm technology

    Weyl-gauging of Topologically Massive Gravity

    We construct a Weyl-invariant extension of topologically massive gravity which, remarkably, turns out to include topologically massive electrodynamics, with a Proca mass term, conformally coupled to a scalar field. The action has no dimensionful parameters, therefore, the masses are generated via symmetry breaking either radiatively in flat backgrounds or spontaneously in constant curvature backgrounds. The broken phase of the theory, generically, has a single massive spin-2 and a massive spin-1 excitation. Chiral gravity in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes does not arise as a low energy theory, while chiral gravity in de Sitter spacetime is not ruled out.Comment: 10 pages, minor changes made, version to appear in Phys.     Vibrational modes in nanocrystalline iron under high pressure

    The phonon density of states (DOS) of nanocrystalline 57Fe was measured using nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NRIXS) at pressures up to 28 GPa in a diamond anvil cell. The nanocrystalline material exhibited an enhancement in its DOS at low energies by a factor of 2.2. This enhancement persisted throughout the entire pressure range, although it was reduced to about 1.7 after decompression. The low-energy regions of the spectra were fitted to the function AEn, giving values of n close to 2 for both the bulk control sample and the nanocrystalline material, indicative of nearly three-dimensional vibrational dynamics. At higher energies, the van Hove singularities observed in both samples were coincident in energy and remained so at all pressures, indicating that the forces conjugate to the normal coordinates of the nanocrystalline materials are similar to the interatomic potentials of bulk crystals

    Effect of ionizing (gamma) and non-ionizing (UV) radiation on the development of Trichogramma euproctidis (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae)

    The potential of using gamma and ultraviolet radiation as an alternative treatment to increase the efficiency of Trichogramma euproctidis (Girault 1911) (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) was investigated in the laboratory. The developmental and adult stages of T. euproctidis were exposed to gamma radiation of different doses (0-30 Gy) and ultraviolet radiation of 254 nm wavelengths (UV-C) for different durations (0-10 min) to assess their effect on each of the instars and their potential in breaking the developmental cycle of the egg parasitoid. The LD50 values for eggs, prepupae, pupae and adults were 8.1, 10.0, 22.7 and 9.5 Gy for gamma radiation and 9.5, 0.12, 2.0 and 11.9 min for UV radiation, respectively. The pupa and adult stages were more radioresistant to both gamma and UV radiation. The most interesting and unexpected result obtained for the prepupal stage was that UV radiation has a greater effect on prepupal stages than gamma radiation

    Magnetic order and interactions in ferrimagnetic Mn3Si2Te6

    The magnetism in Mn3_3Si2_2Te6_6 has been investigated using thermodynamic measurements, first principles calculations, neutron diffraction and diffuse neutron scattering on single crystals. These data confirm that Mn3_3Si2_2Te6_6 is a ferrimagnet below a Curie temperature of TCT_C approximately 78K. The magnetism is anisotropic, with magnetization and neutron diffraction demonstrating that the moments lie within the basal plane of the trigonal structure. The saturation magnetization of approximately 1.6μB\mu_B/Mn at 5K originates from the different multiplicities of the two antiferromagnetically-aligned Mn sites. First principles calculations reveal antiferromagnetic exchange for the three nearest Mn-Mn pairs, which leads to a competition between the ferrimagnetic ground state and three other magnetic configurations. The ferrimagnetic state results from the energy associated with the third-nearest neighbor interaction, and thus long-range interactions are essential for the observed behavior. Diffuse magnetic scattering is observed around the 002 Bragg reflection at 120K, which indicates the presence of strong spin correlations well above TCT_C. These are promoted by the competing ground states that result in a relative suppression of TCT_C, and may be associated with a small ferromagnetic component that produces anisotropic magnetism below \approx330K.Comment: Main article plus Supplementa

    Unscreened water-diversion pipes pose an entrainment risk to the threatened green sturgeon, Acipenser medirostris.

    Over 3,300 unscreened agricultural water diversion pipes line the levees and riverbanks of the Sacramento River (California) watershed, where the threatened Southern Distinct Population Segment of green sturgeon, Acipenser medirostris, spawn. The number of sturgeon drawn into (entrained) and killed by these pipes is greatly unknown. We examined avoidance behaviors and entrainment susceptibility of juvenile green sturgeon (35±0.6 cm mean fork length) to entrainment in a large (>500-kl) outdoor flume with a 0.46-m-diameter water-diversion pipe. Fish entrainment was generally high (range: 26-61%), likely due to a lack of avoidance behavior prior to entering inescapable inflow conditions. We estimated that up to 52% of green sturgeon could be entrained after passing within 1.5 m of an active water-diversion pipe three times. These data suggest that green sturgeon are vulnerable to unscreened water-diversion pipes, and that additional research is needed to determine the potential impacts of entrainment mortality on declining sturgeon populations. Data under various hydraulic conditions also suggest that entrainment-related mortality could be decreased by extracting water at lower diversion rates over longer periods of time, balancing agricultural needs with green sturgeon conservation

    Planetary migration in evolving planetesimals discs

    In the current paper, we further improved the model for the migration of planets introduced in Del Popolo et al. (2001) and extended to time-dependent planetesimal accretion disks in Del Popolo and Eksi (2002). In the current study, the assumption of Del Popolo and Eksi (2002), that the surface density in planetesimals is proportional to that of gas, is released. In order to obtain the evolution of planetesimal density, we use a method developed in Stepinski and Valageas (1997) which is able to simultaneously follow the evolution of gas and solid particles for up to 10^7 yrs. Then, the disk model is coupled to migration model introduced in Del Popolo et al. (2001) in order to obtain the migration rate of the planet in the planetesimal. We find that the properties of solids known to exist in protoplanetary systems, together with reasonable density profiles for the disk, lead to a characteristic radius in the range 0.03-0.2 AU for the final semi-major axis of the giant planet.Comment: IJMP A in prin
