    Expression of the Inhibitory CD200 Receptor Is Associated with Alternative Macrophage Activation

    Classical macrophage activation is inhibited by the CD200 receptor (CD200R). Here, we show that CD200R expression was specifically induced on human in vitro polarized macrophages of the alternatively activated M2a subtype, generated by incubation with IL-4 or IL-13. In mice, peritoneal M2 macrophages, elicited during infection with the parasites Taenia crassiceps or Tryponosoma brucei brucei, expressed increased CD200R levels compared to those derived from uninfected mice. However, in vitro stimulation of mouse peritoneal macrophages and T crassiceps infection in IL-4-/- and IL-4R-/- mice showed that, in contrast to humans, induction of CD200R in mice was not IL-4 or IL-13 dependent. Our data identify CD200R as a suitable marker for alternatively activated macrophages in humans and corroborate observations of distinct species- and/or site-specific mechanisms regulating macrophage polarization in mouse and man.     Surface Reaction Films from Amine-Based Organic Friction Modifiers and Their Influence on Surface Fatigue and Friction

    Surface reactive additives are crucial in the lubrication of surfaces experiencing cyclic contact. The combination of additives in the lubricant, on the material surface and the complex tribo-contact conditions hinders the design of additive packages which can simultaneously protect steel surfaces from wear and fatigue. Amine-based Organic Friction Modifiers (OFMs) influence the tribological performance of steel surfaces. This study investigates the tribochemical impact of three amine-based OFMs in combination with Zinc DialkylDithioPhosphate (ZDDP) on tribological performance, particularly surface fatigue, for steel surfaces in severe rolling–sliding contacts. The thickness of reaction films was tracked throughout experiments and the chemistry of reaction films was examined using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Results highlight the impact of the OFM polar moiety on tribological performance and its influence on chemical composition of tribo-reaction films and their formation kinetics. The combination of selected OFMs with ZDDP reduces frictional forces and can mitigate surface fatigue under certain conditions

    Anger and aggression in borderline personality disorder and attention deficithyperactivity disorder – does stress matter?

    BACKGROUND: The impact of stress on anger and aggression in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has not been thoroughly investigated. The goal of this study was to investigate different aspects of anger and aggression in patients with these disorders. METHODS: Twenty-nine unmedicated female BPD patients, 28 ADHD patients and 30 healthy controls (HC) completed self-reports measuring trait anger, aggression and emotion regulation capacities. A modified version of the Point Subtraction Aggression Paradigm and a state anger measurement were applied under resting and stress conditions. Stress was induced by the Mannheim Multicomponent Stress Test (MMST). RESULTS: Both patient groups scored significantly higher on all self-report measures compared to HCs. Compared to ADHD patients, BPD patients reported higher trait aggression and hostility, a stronger tendency to express anger when provoked and to direct anger inwardly. Furthermore, BPD patients exhibited higher state anger than HCs and ADHD patients under both conditions and showed a stress-dependent anger increase. At the behavioral level, no significant effects were found. In BPD patients, aggression and anger were positively correlated with emotion regulation deficits. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest a significant impact of stress on self-perceived state anger in BPD patients but not on aggressive behavior towards others in females with BPD or ADHD. However, it appears to be pronounced inwardly directed anger which is of clinical importance in BPD patients.     Statistical mechanics of semiflexible polymers

    We present the statistical-mechanical theory of semiflexible polymers based on the connection between the Kratky-Porod model and the quantum rigid rotator in an external homogeneous field, and treatment of the latter using the quantum mechanical propagator method. The expressions and relations existing for flexible polymers can be generalized to semiflexible ones, if one replaces the Fourier-Laplace transform of the end-to-end polymer distance, 1/(k2/3+p)1/(k^{2}/3+p), through the matrix P~(k,p)=(I+ikDM)−1D\tilde{P}(k,p)=(I+ikDM)^{-1}D, where DD and MM are related to the spectrum of the quantum rigid rotator, and considers an appropriate matrix element of the expression under consideration. The present work provides also the framework to study polymers in external fields, and problems including the tangents of semiflexible polymers. We study the structure factor of the polymer, the transversal fluctuations of a free end of the polymer with fixed tangent of another end, and the localization of a semiflexible polymer onto an interface. We obtain the partition function of a semiflexible polymer in half space with Dirichlet boundary condition in terms of the end-to-end distribution function of the free semiflexible polymer, study the behaviour of a semiflexible polymer in the vicinity of a surface, and adsorption onto a surface.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures, changed conten
