Seasonal undernutrition in rural Ethiopia:
Marked seasonal variability of both production- and consumption is characteristic of virtually all farming systems in the developing world. This study examines the magnitude and significance of seasonal undernutrition in south central Ethiopia, southern Shewa and Zigwa Boto, a peasant association in the Gurage Zone. The study seeks to answer five questions: (1)Does seasonal energy stress affect individuals of various age groups and sexes differently? (2)Do members of the same household show divergent responses to seasonal energy stress? (3)What are the functional consequences of different levels of adult undernutrition? (4)Are the current anthropometric cut-off points for adults appropriate for rural Ethiopia? (5)What household characteristics are associated with vulnerability to seasonal undernutrition? Antiretroviral Therapy outcomes among adolescents and youth in rural Zimbabwe
Around 2 million adolescents and 3 million youth are estimated to be living with HIV worldwide. Antiretroviral outcomes for this group appear to be worse compared to adults. We report antiretroviral therapy outcomes from a rural setting in Zimbabwe among patients aged 10-30 years who were initiated on ART between 2005 and 2008. The cohort was stratified into four age groups: 10-15 (young adolescents) 15.1-19 years (adolescents), 19.1-24 years (young adults) and 24.1-29.9 years (older adults). Survival analysis was used to estimate rates of deaths and loss to follow-up stratified by age group. Endpoints were time from ART initiation to death or loss to follow-up. Follow-up of patients on continuous therapy was censored at date of transfer, or study end (31 December 2008). Sex-adjusted Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios for different age groups. 898 patients were included in the analysis; median duration on ART was 468 days. The risk of death were highest in adults compared to young adolescents (aHR 2.25, 95%CI 1.17-4.35). Young adults and adolescents had a 2-3 times higher risk of loss to follow-up compared to young adolescents. When estimating the risk of attrition combining loss to follow-up and death, young adults had the highest risk (aHR 2.70, 95%CI 1.62-4.52). This study highlights the need for adapted adherence support and service delivery models for both adolescents and young adults
Rainfall sequence effects on phosphorus loss in surface runoff from pastures that received poultry litter application
Land application of poultry litter to pasture elevates the concentration of phosphorus in surface runoff and it is becoming an increasing problem in sensitive water bodies. The objectives of this study were to assess the effects of soil test phosphorus (STP), surface application of poultry litter, rainfall/runoff sequences, and time after litter application on dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) in surface runoff from pasture in a greenhouse experiment using rainfall simulation. Treatment factors were poultry litter at a rate of 0.0 and 6.7 Mg ha(-1), low and high STP, and three rainfall/runoff sequences (RRS). The latter refers to runoff-producing rainfall events starting from day 1, day 4, and day 7 after litter application. The study also included a rainfall simulation study of pasture field plots to investigate the effects of poultry litter and time after application on DRP in surface runoff which was used to corroborate the greenhouse study. In both studies, runoff samples were taken at the end of 30 min of continuous runoff Treatment effects on DRP concentrations in surface runoff were analyzed using ANOVA procedures using an alpha = 0.05. For the greenhouse study, poultry litter application, RRS, and time after litter application were found to have a highly significant effect on DRP concentration in surface runoff Poultry litter had a significant effect on DRP concentrations in surface runoff until 18 days after litter application compared to the controls. Between 18 and 32 days after litter application, the effect on DRP became insignificant for any level of STP or rainfall sequence. A rainfall event without runoff reduced DRP concentration in the first surface runoff events by more than 50%. For the field plot study. DRP decreased rapidly with time, thereby corroborating the greenhouse study. The effect of poultry litter on DRP became statistically insignificant sometime between 35 and 161 days after application
Gendered Livelihood Implications of Resource Access for Livestock Productivity Improvement in the Mixed Croplivestock System of Central Highlands, Ethiopia
Poor farmers require essential assets to increase benefits from their livelihood activities. This paper demonstrates gender implications of accessing different livelihood assets in order to improve productivity and thus reduce poverty. Gendered Sustainable Livelihoods Framework (GSLF) with Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) tools was used to look at various issues related to livestock productivity and its contribution to farmers’ livelihood improvement. Three major target groups of farmer households were purposely sampled to take part in PRA exercises. Aiming at improvements in livestock productivity and gendered livelihoods, this comparative study was conducted in two case areas (Lenche Dima watershed and Kuhar Michael kebele), from June 2008 to February 2010, using qualitative approach. The study explored (1) the gender and livelihoods variations of access to assets and outputs/benefits, (2) implication of the above variations in improving water productivity especially for livestock keeping and then other livelihood activities, and (3) challenges, gaps, and entry points for targeting gender sensitive interventions. The result showed the existence of different levels of (1) gender and livelihoods variations between sites in accessing resources and benefits and (2) implications of the above variations on water productivity for livestock and other uses. Among the targeted farmer groups, women and young poor male farmers were identified as disadvantaged. This is mainly due to the limitations in accessing: 1) natural asset (land) for both farmer groups, 2) human asset (labor) for women farmers and 3) financial asset (money) for young farmers. They were also observed as more vulnerable groups for shocks like production failure and drought. Social assets such as kinship, joint arrangements, sharecropping and exchange arrangements, and Debo/Jigi-group works were important assets identified as temporary solutions helping these disadvantaged groups in addition to their own coping mechanism. The study suggests that a consideration of the limitations of the disadvantaged groups in water/livestock development intervention options is necessary to narrow gendered livelihoods variations and hence minimize poverty.Key words: gendered-livelihood, livelihood-asset, livestock-productivity, mixed production syste
A new measurement of the neutron detection efficiency for the NaI Crystal Ball detector
We report on a measurement of the neutron detection efficiency in NaI
crystals in the Crystal Ball detector obtained from a study of single p0
photoproduction on deuterium using the tagged photon beam at the Mainz
Microtron. The results were obtained up to a neutron energy of 400 MeV. They
are compared to previous measurements made more than 15 years ago at the pion
beam at the BNL AGS
Photoproduction of π0-pairs off protons and off neutrons
Total cross sections, angular distributions, and invariant-mass distributions have been measured for the photoproduction of π0π0 pairs off free protons and off nucleons bound in the deuteron. The experiments were performed at the MAMI accelerator facility in Mainz using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer and the Crystal Ball/TAPS detector. The accelerator delivered electron beams of 1508 and 1557MeV, which produced bremsstrahlung in thin radiator foils. The tagged photon beam covered energies up to 1400MeV. The data from the free proton target are in good agreement with previous measurements and were only used to test the analysis procedures. The results for differential cross sections (angular distributions and invariant-mass distributions) for free and quasi-free protons are almost identical in shape, but differ in absolute magnitude up to 15%. Thus, moderate final-state interaction effects are present. The data for quasi-free neutrons are similar to the proton data in the second resonance region (final-state invariant masses up to ≈1550 MeV), where both reactions are dominated by the N(1520)3/2−→Δ(1232)3/2+π decay. At higher energies, angular and invariant-mass distributions are different. A simple analysis of the shapes of the invariant-mass distributions in the third resonance region is consistent with strong contributions of an N⋆→Nσ decay for the proton, while the reaction is dominated by a sequential decay via a Δπ intermediate state for the neutron. The data are compared to predictions from the Two-Pion-MAID model and the Bonn-Gatchina coupled-channel analysis
Photoproduction of pi0-mesons off neutrons in the nucleon resonance region
Precise angular distributions have been measured for the first time for the
photoproduction of -mesons off neutrons bound in the deuteron. The
effects from nuclear Fermi motion have been eliminated by a complete kinematic
reconstruction of the final state. The influence of final-state-interaction
effects has been estimated by a comparison of the reaction cross section for
quasi-free protons bound in the deuteron to the results for free protons and
then applied as a correction to the quasi-free neutron data. The experiment was
performed at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron MAMI with the
Crystal Ball and TAPS detector setup for incident photon energies between
~GeV and ~GeV. The results are compared to the predictions from
reaction models and partial-wave analyses based on data from other isospin
channels. The model predictions show large discrepancies among each other and
the present data will provide much tighter constraints. This is demonstrated by
the results of a new analysis in the framework of the Bonn-Gatchina
coupled-channel analysis which included the present data.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys; Rev. Let
Quasifree photoproduction of mesons off protons and neutrons
Differential and total cross sections for the quasifree reactions and have been determined at the
MAMI-C electron accelerator using a liquid deuterium target. Photons were
produced via bremsstrahlung from the 1.5 GeV incident electron beam and
energy-tagged with the Glasgow photon tagger. Decay photons of the neutral
decay modes and and coincident recoil nucleons were detected in a combined setup of
the Crystal Ball and the TAPS calorimeters. The -production cross
sections were measured in coincidence with recoil protons, recoil neutrons, and
in an inclusive mode without a condition on recoil nucleons, which allowed a
check of the internal consistency of the data. The effects from nuclear Fermi
motion were removed by a kinematic reconstruction of the final-state invariant
mass and possible nuclear effects on the quasifree cross section were
investigated by a comparison of free and quasifree proton data. The results,
which represent a significant improvement in statistical quality compared to
previous measurements, agree with the known neutron-to-proton cross-section
ratio in the peak of the resonance and confirm a peak in the
neutron cross section, which is absent for the proton, at a center-of-mass
energy MeV with an intrinsic width of MeV
Data abstractions for decision tree induction
AbstractWhen descriptions of data values in a database are too concrete or too detailed, the computational complexity needed to discover useful knowledge from the database will be generally increased. Furthermore, discovered knowledge tends to become complicated. A notion of data abstraction seems useful to resolve this kind of problems, as we obtain a smaller and more general database after the abstraction, from which we can quickly extract more abstract knowledge that is expected to be easier to understand. In general, however, since there exist several possible abstractions, we have to carefully select one according to which the original database is generalized. An inadequate selection would make the accuracy of extracted knowledge worse.From this point of view, we propose in this paper a method of selecting an appropriate abstraction from possible ones, assuming that our task is to construct a decision tree from a relational database. Suppose that, for each attribute in a relational database, we have a class of possible abstractions for the attribute values. As an appropriate abstraction for each attribute, we prefer an abstraction such that, even after the abstraction, the distribution of target classes necessary to perform our classification task can be preserved within an acceptable error range given by user.By the selected abstractions, the original database can be transformed into a small generalized database written in abstract values. Therefore, it would be expected that, from the generalized database, we can construct a decision tree whose size is much smaller than one constructed from the original database. Furthermore, such a size reduction can be justified under some theoretical assumptions. The appropriateness of abstraction is precisely defined in terms of the standard information theory. Therefore, we call our abstraction framework Information Theoretical Abstraction.We show some experimental results obtained by a system ITA that is an implementation of our abstraction method.
