    Location of noise sources using a phase-slope method

    Two three-element microphone arrays have been used to predict the position of both pure-tone and broadband noise sources in an anechoic chamber under different ground impedance conditions. Source positions are predicted using the slope of phase-frequency plots between array elements. A phase-slope method for quantitatively assessing both the accuracy and precision of estimates of noise source location is introduced and illustrated. When the phase-slope method is used, there is higher accuracy and more precision in estimates of source location with a small ground impedance than with a large ground impedance. As would be expected, ground impedance effects are larger for low elevation angles than for high elevation angles

    Associations of cardiac structure with obesity, blood pressure, inflammation, and insulin resistance in African-American adolescents.

    To determine if obesity, blood pressure (BP), markers of inflammation, and insulin resistance are associated with cardiac structure in African-American adolescents, a cross-sectional study was performed on a cohort oversampled for high BP and obesity. Measurements included the following: anthropometrics, BP, homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) to assess insulin resistance, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and plasma adipokines (adiponectin, interleukin-6, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1). Echocardiogram measurements were left-ventricular mass index (LVMI) (g/m(2.7)), LV relative wall thickness (LVRWT), left-atrial diameter index [LADI (mm/m)], and LV diastolic time intervals. LADI (r (2) = 0.25) was associated with body mass index (BMI) systolic BP (SBP) and female sex. LVMI (r (2) = 0.35) variation was associated with BMI SBP, heart rate, age, and male sex. LVRWT (r (2) = 0.05) was associated with HOMA. Tissue diastolic intervals were not associated with any risk factor. Inflammatory markers and adipokines were associated with BMI but were not independently associated with any echocardiographic measures. In African-American adolescents, BMI and SBP, but not inflammatory markers or adipokines, are important correlates of LA size and LVM

    Evaluating how agent methodologies support the specification of the normative environment through the development process

    [EN] Due to the increase in collaborative work and the decentralization of processes in many domains, there is an expanding demand for large-scale, flexible and adaptive software systems to support the interactions of people and institutions distributed in heterogeneous environments. Commonly, these software applications should follow specific regulations meaning the actors using them are bound by rights, duties and restrictions. Since this normative environment determines the final design of the software system, it should be considered as an important issue during the design of the system. Some agent-oriented software engineering methodologies deal with the development of normative systems (systems that have a normative environment) by integrating the analysis of the normative environment of a system in the development process.     Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopic Thermometry in a Supersonic Combustor

    An experiment has been conducted to acquire data for the validation of computational fluid dynamics codes used in the design of supersonic combustors. The flow in a supersonic combustor, consisting of a diverging duct with a single downstream-angled wail injector, is studied. Combustor entrance Mach number is 2 and enthalpy nominally corresponds to Mach 7 flight. The primary measurement technique is coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy, but surface pressures and temperatures have also been acquired. Modern design of experiment techniques have been used to maximize the quality of the data set (for the given level of effort) and to minimize systematic errors. Temperature maps are obtained at several planes in the flow for a case in which the combustor is piloted by injecting fuel upstream of the main injector and one case in which it is not piloted.     Stimulated radiative laser cooling

    Building a refrigerator based on the conversion of heat into optical energy is an ongoing engineering challenge. Under well-defined conditions, spontaneous anti-Stokes fluorescence of a dopant material in a host matrix is capable of lowering the host temperature. The fluorescence is conveying away a part of the thermal energy stored in the vibrational oscillations of the host lattice. In particular, applying this principle to the cooling of (solid-state) lasers opens up many potential device applications, especially in the domain of high-power lasers. In this paper, an alternative optical cooling scheme is outlined, leading to radiative cooling of solid-state lasers. It is based on converting the thermal energy stored in the host, into optical energy by means of a stimulated nonlinear process, rather than a spontaneous process. This should lead to better cooling efficiencies and a higher potential of applying the principle for device applications

    The truth about snitches: an archival analysis of informant testimony

    Informants are witnesses who often testify in exchange for an incentive (i.e. jailhouse informant, cooperating witness). Despite the widespread use of informants, little is known about the circumstances surrounding their use at trial. This study content-analyzed trials from 22 DNA exoneration cases involving 53 informants. Because these defendants were exonerated, the prosecution informant testimony is demonstrably false. Informant characteristics including motivation for testifying, criminal history, relationship with the defendant and testimony were coded. Most informants were prosecution jailhouse informants; however, there were also defence jailhouse informants and prosecution cooperating witnesses. Regardless of informant type, most denied receiving an incentive, had criminal histories, were friends/acquaintances of the defendant and had testimonial inconsistencies. In closing statements, attorneys relied on informant testimony by either emphasizing or questioning its reliability. The impact of informant testimony on jurors’ decisions is discussed in terms of truth-default theory (TDT), the fundamental attribution error and prosecutorial vouching

    Limitations of Absolute Current Densities Derived from the Semel & Skumanich Method

    Semel and Skumanich proposed a method to obtain the absolute electric current density, |Jz|, without disambiguation of 180 degree in the transverse field directions. The advantage of the method is that the uncertainty in the determination of the ambiguity in the magnetic azimuth is removed. Here, we investigate the limits of the calculation when applied to a numerical MHD model. We found that the combination of changes in the magnetic azimuth with vanishing horizontal field component leads to errors, where electric current densities are often strong. Where errors occur, the calculation gives |Jz| too small by factors typically 1.2 ~ 2.0.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures.
