We report experiments about the deposition of water soluble surfactants at the interface between two fluids. After some theoretical developments, we study the spreading of water soluble amphiphiles at the water/air interface. In this part, we present two experimental setups where these molecules show a typical induced flow velocity, and a finite spreading distance, depending on the CMC of surfactant we use, which results in the apparition of a coronna on the surface of the liquid. We then set up a fast and simple CMC measurement protocole using our experimental setup. This spreading induces also a vertical deformation of the interface, a double toroidal recirculation in the bulk, and a beatiful hydrodynamic surface instability all around the coronna. The second experiment is about the spreading of amphiphiles at the interface between oil and water. In this experiment, the vertical deformations induced by the spreading can become so important that under certain circumstances, we manage to create a hole in the oil layer. We focus on the study of these vertical deformations and on the caracteristics of this hole. Finally, the last experiment is about the deposition of a Triton X-100 drop at the water/air interface. This molecule has the ability to gelify when it gets hydrated, allowing him to float. Then we can observe the self propulsion of the droplet. We focus on the microscopic structure of this gel phase, and also on the erratic trajectories followed by the drop.

The Marangoni flow of soluble amphiphiles

Surfactant distribution heterogeneities at a fluid/fluid interface trigger the Marangoni effect, i.e. a bulk flow due to a surface tension gradient. The influence of surfactant solubility in the bulk on these flows remains incompletely characterized. Here we study Marangoni flows sustained by injection of hydrosoluble surfactants at the air/water interface. We show that the flow extent increases with a decrease of the critical micelle concentration, i.e. the concentration at which these surfactants self-assemble in water. We document the universality of the surface velocity field and predict scaling laws based on hydrodynamics and surfactant physicochemistry that capture the flow features.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitte

Use of geochemical signatures, including rare earth elements, in mosses and lichens to assess spatial integration and the influence of forest environment

In order to assess the influence of local environment and spatial integration of Trace Metals (TM) by biomonitors, Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cs, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sn, V and Zn and some rare earth element (REE) concentrations have been measured in lichens and mosses collected in three French forest sites located in three distinct mountainous areas, as well as in the local soil and bedrock, and in both bulk deposition (BD) and throughfall (TF). Similar enrichment factors (EF) were calculated using lichens and mosses and local bedrock for most elements, except for Cs, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Cu which were significantly (KW, p < 0.05) more enriched in mosses. Similar REE ratios were measured in soils, bedrock, lichens and mosses at each study sites, indicating a regional integration of atmospheric deposition by both biomonitors. Both TM signature and REE composition of mosses revealed that this biomonitor is highly influenced by throughfall composition, and reflect atmospheric deposition interaction with the forest canopy. This explained the higher enrichment measured in mosses for elements which concentration in deposition were influenced by the canopy, either due to leaching (Mn), direct uptake (Ni), or dry deposition dissolution (Pb, Cu, Cs)

Optical pump-rejection filter based on silicon sub-wavelength engineered photonic structures

The high index contrast of the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform allows the realization of ultra-compact photonic circuits. However, this high contrast hinders the implementation of narrow-band Bragg filters. These typically require corrugations widths of a few nanometers or double-etch geometries, hampering device fabrication. Here we report, for the first time, on the realization of SOI Bragg filters based on sub-wavelength index engineering in a differential corrugation width configuration. The proposed double periodicity structure allows narrow-band rejection with a single etch step and relaxed width constraints. Based on this concept, we experimentally demonstrate a single-etch, 220 nm\mathbf{220\,nm} thick, Si Bragg filter featuring a corrugation width of 150 nm\mathbf{150\,nm}, a rejection bandwidth of 1.1 nm\mathbf{1.1\,nm} and an extinction ratio exceeding 40 dB\mathbf{40\,dB}. This represents a ten-fold width increase compared to conventional single-periodicity, single-etch counterparts with similar bandwidths

Investigation of size effects on the structure of liquid GeSe2 calculated via first-principles molecular dynamics

The structural properties of liquid GeSe2 have been calculated by first-principles molecular dynamics by using a periodic simulation box containing N = 480 atoms. This has allowed a comparison with previous results obtained on a smaller system size (N = 120) [M. Micoulaut, R. Vuilleumier, and C. Massobrio, Phys. Rev. B 79, 214205 (2009)]. In the domain of first-principles molecular dynamics, we obtain an assessment of system size effects of unprecedented quality. Overall, no drastic differences are found between the two sets of results, confirming that N = 120 is a suitable size to achieve a realistic description of this prototypical disordered network. However, for N = 480, short range properties are characterized by an increase of chemical order, the number of Ge tetrahedra coordinated to four Se atoms being larger. At the intermediate range order level, size effect mostly modify the low wavevector region (k similar to 1 angstrom(-1)) in the concentration-concentration partial structure factor

Probing Behavior of Apterous and Alate Morphs of two Potato—Colonizing Aphids

Secondary host plant colonization by aphids involves alate and apterous morphs to spread in the population at a large scale by flying or, at a finer one, by walking. Macrosiphum euphorbiae Thomas (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and Myzus persicae Sulzer (Hemiptera: Aphididae) are two polyphagous aphids that cause serious losses on many crops, particularly on potato, Solanum tuberosum L. (Solanales: Solanaceae). When settlement of virginoparous alate aphids occurs, apterous individuals are produced and spread within the potato field. As these two potato colonizers originate from different areas and show different body length, this study compared probing behaviors of virginoparous alate and apterous M. persicae and M. euphorbiae on one of their secondary host plants, Solanum tuberosum. Non—choice bioassays and electrical penetration graph (EPG) recordings were performed. Most M. euphorbiae of the two morphs rapidly accepted potato plants and exhibited long duration of probing, phloem sap salivation, and ingestion phases. In contrast, at the end of the experiment, most alates of M. persicae left the potato leaflet after brief gustative probes. Moreover, EPG experiments showed that the main difference between both morphs of the two species concerned the xylem ingestion parameter. Differences between species were also reported, such as an increased total duration of probing in both morphs and enhanced phloem ingestion duration in apterous M. euphorbiae. All the differences highlighted in this study are discussed according to the variations observed in aphid body size and to their historical association with Solanum species

The Search Coil Magnetometer for THEMIS

International audienceTHEMIS instruments incorporate a tri-axial Search Coil Magnetometer (SCM) designed to measure the magnetic components of waves associated with substorm breakup and expansion. The three search coil antennas cover the same frequency bandwidth, from 0.1 Hz to 4 kHz, in the ULF/ELF frequency range. They extend, with appropriate Noise Equivalent Magnetic Induction (NEMI) and sufficient overlap, the measurements of the fluxgate magnetometers. The NEMI of the searchcoil antennas and associated pre-amplifiers is smaller than 0.76 pT/ p Hz at 10 Hz.The analog signals produced by the searchcoils and associated preamplifiers are digitized and processed inside the IDPU, together with data from the EFI instrument. Searchcoil telemetry includes waveform transmission, FFT processed data, and data from a filter bank. The frequency range covered in waveform depends on the available telemetry. The searchcoils and their three axis structures have been precisely calibrated in a quiet site, and the calibration of the transfer function is checked on board usually once per orbit. The tri-axial searchcoils implemented on the five THEMIS spacecraft are working nominally

The structure of liquid GeSe revisited: A first principles molecular dynamics study:

Early first-principles molecular dynamics results on liquid GeSe were characterized by shortcomings in the description of Ge-Ge (and to a lesser extent Se-Se) short range correlations. In that case the exchange-correlation functional adopted was the one devised by Perdew and Wang (PW91). In the search of improvements in the atomic-scale modelling of this liquid, we have produced new sets of data by employing two different schemes for the exchange-correlation part within the density functional theory approach. The two functionals selected are those proposed by Becke, Lee, Yang, and Parr (BLYP) and by Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof (PBE). The PBE results turned out to be quite similar to the PW91 ones. The BLYP results feature instead a better account of the Ge-Ge first shell of neighbors, correctly exhibiting two clear maxima separated by a deep minimum. Due to the increase in the number of the tetrahedral structural units, the atomic mobility of Ge and Se atoms in the network is reduced with respect to the PW91 case. This brings the diffusion coefficients of the two species down to values close to those of liquid Ge2Se3 and liquid GeSe2. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC

Structural properties of glassy Ge2Se3 from first-principles molecular dynamics

    Get PDF
The structural properties of glassy Ge2Se3 were studied in the framework of first-principles molecular dynamics by using the Becke-Lee-Yang-Parr scheme for the treatment of the exchange-correlation functional in density functional theory. Our results for the total neutron structure factor and the total pair distribution function are in very good agreement with the experimental results. When compared to the structural description obtained for liquid Ge2Se3, glassy Ge2Se3 is found to be characterized by a larger percentage of fourfold coordinated Ge atoms and a lower number of miscoordinations. However, Ge-Ge homopolar bonds inevitably occur due to the lack of Se atoms available, at this concentration, to form GeSe4 tetrahedra. Focusing on the family of glasses GexSe1-x, the present results allow a comparison to be carried out in reciprocal and real space among three prototypical glassy structures. The first was obtained at the stoichiometric composition (glassy GeSe2), the second at a Se-rich composition (glassy GeSe4) and the third at a Ge-rich composition (glassy Ge2Se3). All networks are consistent with the “8 - N” rule, in particular, glassy GeSe4, which exhibits the highest degree of chemical order. The electronic structure of glassy Ge2Se3 has been characterized by using the Wannier localized orbital formalism. The analysis of the Ge environment shows the presence of dangling, ionocovalent Ge-Se, and covalent bonds, the latter related to Ge-Ge connections.
