A virtual power plant model for time-driven power flow calculations

This paper presents the implementation of a custom-made virtual power plant model in OpenDSS. The goal is to develop a model adequate for time-driven power flow calculations in distribution systems. The virtual power plant is modeled as the aggregation of renewable generation and energy storage connected to the distribution system through an inverter. The implemented operation mode allows the virtual power plant to act as a single dispatchable generation unit. The case studies presented in the paper demonstrate that the model behaves according to the specified control algorithm and show how it can be incorporated into the solution scheme of a general parallel genetic algorithm in order to obtain the optimal day-ahead dispatch. Simulation results exhibit a clear benefit from the deployment of a virtual power plant when compared to distributed generation based only on renewable intermittent generation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Reliability analysis of distribution systems with photovoltaic generation using a power flow simulator and a parallel Monte Carlo approach

This paper presents a Monte Carlo approach for reliability assessment of distribution systems with distributed generation using parallel computing. The calculations are carried out with a royalty-free power flow simulator, OpenDSS (Open Distribution System Simulator). The procedure has been implemented in an environment in which OpenDSS is driven from MATLAB. The test system is an overhead distribution system represented by means of a three-phase model that includes protective devices. The paper details the implemented procedure, which can be applied to systems with or without distributed generation, includes an illustrative case study and summarizes the results derived from the analysis of the test system during one year. The goal is to evaluate the test system performance considering different scenarios with different level of system automation and reconfiguration, and assess the impact that distributed photovoltaic generation can have on that performance. A Solid State Transformer model for power flow calculations

This paper presents the implementation of a Solid State Transformer (SST) model in OpenDSS. The goal is to develop a SST model that could be useful for assessing the impact that the replacement of the conventional iron-and-copper transformer with the SST can have on the distribution system performance. Test distribution systems of different characteristics and size have been simulated during different time periods. The simulations have been carried out assuming voltage-dependent loads and considering that power flow through either the HV/MV substation transformer or any of the MV/LV distribution transformers can be bidirectional. Simulation results prove that a positive impact should be expected on voltages at both MV and LV levels, but the efficiency of current SST designs should be improved.Postprint (author's final draft

The late antiquity sarcophagus from Almodovar old road (or the limits of iconography)

En una publicación del año 2006 planteábamos la posibilidad de que el famoso “relieve ibérico de Almodóvar” fuese, en realidad, una pieza de época visigoda, atendiendo a los tipos de talla, los modos de trabajo y, sólo en último término, a la iconografía. Gracias a un programa integral de recuperación y restauración de las piezas del Museo Arqueológico de Córdoba llevado a cabo durante 2009 se ha podido comprobar que el llamado “relieve” es en realidad, y como se dijo inmediatamente después de su descubrimiento, el frontal decorado de la caja de un sarcófago, confirmándose así la datación tardoantigua para la pieza, lo que lleva al autor a recapacitar sobre los límites de los estudios iconográficos.In a publication of 2006 we proposed the possibility that the famous “Iberian relief of Almodovar” were actually a piece of the Visigothic period, taking into account the type of carving, types of work and, only as a last resort, the iconography. Through a comprehensive programme of recovery and restoration of pieces of the Archaeological Museum of Cordoba undertaken during 2009 we have been able to verify that the so-called “relief” is actually, and as mentioned immediately after its discovery, the decorated front of the case of a sarcophagus, confirming that way that we can date back the piece to Late Antiquity, which leads the author to reflect on the limits of iconographic studies

El acceso norte al Teatro Romano de Córdoba: secuencia estratigráfica y estudio de materiales

This article gives a general view on the stratigraphical sequence and pottery of the excavation in the "Roman Patio" of the "Museo Arqueológico Provincial" (Córdoba), carried out in May, 1994. Thanks to this excavation, the existence of a Roman theatre in the area was stated and there could be dated its North access (a square), the foundations of the Summa Cavea, and the water supply systems, which date back to the Augustean period. In addition, there could also be defined and dated a complete sequence, which spans the period from the second half of the third century a.d. (in which there were several reforms) to the sixth century a. d. (in which it was abandoned and turned into a cemetery).El siguiente artículo ofrece una visión general de la secuencia estratigráfica y de los materiales cerámicos de la excavación en el Patio Romano del Museo Arqueológico Provincial que se produjo en el mes de Mayo de 1994'. En esta excavación se pudo constatar la existencia de un teatro romano en la zona y se logró fechar su plaza de acceso norte, la cimentación de la svmma cavea y los sistemas hidráulicos de este complejo, que datan de época augustea. Además, también se consiguió definir y datar una completa secuencia que abarca desde ciertas reformas de la segunda mitad del s. III d.C. hasta el abandono definitivo del edificio y su conversión en zona cementerial en el s. VI d.C

Se presenta una serie de dibujos que vienen a traducir un encuentro experiencial y existencial con tres arquitecturas-paisaje apenas estudiadas. Son lecturas gráficas de tres figuras espaciales y ontológicas. Casos concretos de cabañas, cámaras y trincheras, que analizados desde una perspectiva histórica aportan claves a cuestiones nucleares en nuestro tiempo -como son la autoconstrucción, la auto-organización y la emancipación.
