Optical sensor to measure the projectile velocity
Displays & Photonics Applications Group (GDAF), belonging to Electronics Technology Department of University Carlos III of Madrid (Spain), has designed and implemented a simple, cost-effective, and robust optoelectronic system to measure online the average velocity of a projectile. This system is able to measure velocities ranged between 100m/s and 1200m/s). Potential applications are focused on experimental impact tests on aircraft and spacecraft structures. We are seeking potential collaborations with international/national research centres and enterprises to extent the range of potential applications
Multimode interference filter to solve degradation on coupler common-mode rejection
After quantifying degradation of a common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) 3dB-coupler due to excitation of TE01 mode, a novel compact circuit including multimode interference (MMI) coupler+bend+MMI+filter (CBF) is proposed. We show a CBF circuit has better CMRR at the expense of moderate loss. A complete tolerance analysis to main geometrical parameters has also been carried out.Publicad
capital as an explanatory factor of corruption. In particular, we attempt to
estimate to what extent the perceived levels of corruption are associated to
certain forms of trust and social norms and, therefore, to social capital in its
diverse expressions. The empirical evidence suggests that generalized trust and
universalistic norms constitute a positive form of social capital that is inversely
related to corruption. By contrast, the particularistic expressions of trust
represent a negative social capital directly linked to the rising of corruption

Identificación, empatía y disposición de pago
The present study analyzes the effects of sympathy and identification between sports
fans and clubs in the recognition of willingness to pay in favor of these organizations. With
this objective, after reconsidering the diverse approaches to this type of bonds, we propose in the first part a theoretical model that considers the psychosociological factors which affect
the willingness to pay for this kind of goods and services that have characteristics similar to public goods. This model allows us to extract two hypotheses on the interrelation between sympathy, income and willingness to pay. In the second part, we put these hypotheses to the test. The results establish, as predicted, that identification or sympathy with a club constitutes an important causal factor in its valuation, although income has no causal relation with this. Both can explain some irregularities found within the contingent valuation methodEl presente estudio analiza el impacto de la simpatía y la identificación
Ambos factores
sirven para explicar las anomalías encontradas en el método de valoración contingenteThe authors acknowledge financial support by 10SEC100041 PR from the Xunta de Galici

Does Corruption Have Social Roots? The Role of Culture and Social Capital
[Abstract:] The aim of this work is to analyse the influence of sociocultural factors on corruption levels. Taking as starting point Husted (J Int Bus Studies 30:339–359, 1999) and Graeff (In: Lambsdorff J, Taube M, Schramm M (eds) The new institutional economics of corruption. Routledge, London, 2005) proposals, we consider both the interrelation between cultural dimensions and the diverse expressions of social capital with corruption. According to our results, the universalistic trust (linking and bridging social capital) constitutes a positive social capital that is negatively linked to corruption. In contrast, the particularistic levels of trust (bonding) can constitute a negative social capital directly related to corruption levels. Furthermore, cultures which are favourable to the legitimation of dependency relations and the formation of closed particularistic groups (power-distance and community factors) create a breeding ground for the development of these amoral rent-seeking structures
The Olson - Putnam Controversy: Some Empirical Evidence
[Abstract:] This paper explores the causal link between associationism and general trust. First we study the principal components that constitute social capital. Then we contrast a structural model identifying the relations between the relevant variables in the so-called Olson-Putnam aporia. The results of the empirical test on the determinants of social capital allow us to conclude that the extension of horizontal networks maintains a direct relation with this form of capital, but not those of vertical type
