Mobility as a key element within a university internationalization policy
This paper highlights the importance of mobility as one of the key processes for the internationalization of universities. It is described as a fundamental part of the integration process of European education systems, the so-called EHEA (European Higher Education Area), as well as the internationalization objectives motivated by the growing interest of having a presence in the international rankings. It also details and analyzes the proposal of indicators that, within the Spanish university system, aims to measure our level of internationalization and the mobility associated with it. In order to conclude, we discuss aspects that are considered important to successfully articulate mobility programs within the academic structure of universities.En este trabajo se pone de manifiesto la importancia de la movilidad como uno de los procesos claves de la internacionalización de las universidades. A unified framework for linear function approximation of value functions in stochastic control
The proceeding at:21st European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2013), took place 2013, September 9-13, in Marrakech (marroc). This paper contributes with a unified formulation that merges previous analysis on the prediction of the performance (value function) of certain sequence of actions (policy) when an agent operates a Markov decision process with large state-space. When the states are represented by features and the value function is linearly approximated, our analysis reveals a new relationship between two common cost functions used to obtain the optimal approximation. In addition, this analysis allows us to propose an efficient adaptive algorithm that provides an unbiased linear estimate. The performance of the proposed algorithm is illustrated by simulation, showing competitive results when compared with the state-of-the-art solutions. This work has been partly funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and

Constrained power allocation schemes for coordinated base station transmission using block diagonalization
In this study, we propose several power allocation schemes in a coordinated base station downlink transmission
with per antenna and per base station power constraints. Block Diagonalization is employed to remove
interference among users. For each set of power constraints, two schemes based on the waterfilling distribution
are proposed and compared to the optimal solution, which can only be obtained numerically by using convex
optimization. We show that the proposed schemes achieve a performance, in terms of weighted sum rate, very
close to the optimal, without the heavy computational complexity required by the latter. The sum rates are
compared first in a simplified two-user two-cell case where we also compare our approach to the previous
solutions available in the literature. Then, we examine the performance in a multi-cell scenario where we also
evaluate the degradation of the performance caused by imperfect channel state informationThis study has been partly funded by projects TEC2008-06327-C03-02,

A control theoretic approach to solve a constrained uplink power dynamic game
This paper addresses an uplink power control dynamic game where we assume that each user battery represents the system state that changes with time following a discrete-time version of a differential game. To overcome the complexity of the analysis of a dynamic game approach we focus on the concept of Dynamic Potential Games showing that the game can be solved as an equivalent Multivariate Optimum Control Problem. The solution of this problem is quite interesting because different users split the activity in time, avoiding higher interferences and providing a long term fairness
Combination of the three types of diversity to design high capacity compact MIMO terminal
Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) schemes designed to increase channel capacity face strong limitations when a large number of antennas must be deployed in a terminal due to size constrains. This letter discusses how the different combinations of the three types of diversities-namely spatial, radiation pattern, and polarization diversity-can be used to get an improved capacity in compact terminals. The study compares realistic combinations that overcome the need for a large number of radiating elements in the user terminal. This work was supported in part by the Spanish Ministry of Sci-ence and Innovation under Project GRE3NSYST (TEC2011-29006-C03-03), Project TEC2013-44019-R, and the CONSOLIDER-INGENIO 2010 program under Project COMONSENS (CSD 2008-00010).Publicad
Experimental Evaluation of Blind Interference Alignment
The proceeding at: 2015 Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC Spring) took place 11-14 May in Glasgow, Ireland. An experimental evaluation of Blind Interference Alignment (BIA) over a hardware platform is presented in this work. In contrast to other transmission techniques such as Linear Zero Forcing Beamforming (LZFB) or Interference Alignment (IA), BIA achieves a growth in Degrees of Freedom (DoF) without channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). A real implementation based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and LTE parameters is implement on a testbed made up of a transmitter equipped with two antennas and two users equipped with a reconfigurable antenna each. Furthermore, a full CSIT technique such as LZFB is also implemented for comparison purposes. First, the theoretic achievable rates are obtained for both techniques. After that, the bit error rate of both schemes is evaluated regarding the achieved sum-thorughput.This work has been partially funded by research projects COMONSENS (CSD2008-00010), and GRE3N (TEC2011-29006-C03-02)
A new framework for solving dynamic scheduling games
Optimum scheduling is a key objective in many communications systems where different users have to share a common resource. Typically, centralized implementations are capable of guaranteeing certain fairness. In our approach, we follow a different path modeling the scheduling process as a dynamic infinite horizon discrete-time game. This formulation allows us to include any kind of dynamics and distributed implementations. Despite, these games are very difficult to solve, we are able to show that they are in fact dynamic potential games equivalent to a non-stationary multivariate optimum control problem. The dynamic control problem is solved via an augmented Bellman equation including time as an extra state
Feasible Transmission Strategies for Downlink MIMO in Sparse Millimeter-Wave Channels
Addressing the disruptive capacity requirements of 5G networks calls for a thorough exploration of multiple technological solutions. Two promising approaches are i) the use of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies that enable multiplicative capacity gains, and ii) the exploration of new frequency bands to enlarge available bandwidth. While millimeter spectrum, one of the main bands under study, poses significant challenges due to its cumbersome propagation characteristics (particularly severe path loss and channel sparsity), its 10-fold frequency increase favors the deployment of reduced-size large antenna arrays for massive MIMO. However, the high cost and power consumption of its required signal mixers and analog-to-digital converters precludes mmWave beamforming from being performed entirely at baseband using digital precoders. A possible cost-effective alternative is the hybrid precoding transceiver architecture, which combines digital and analog precoders. In this article, we exploit the sparse nature of the channel to unveil an advantage in the design of the hybrid precoder. Specifically, by reformulating the hybrid precoder design as a matrix factorization problem and adopting an atomic norm minimization approach, we propose a new hybrid precoding algorithm that takes advantage of the sparse nature of the mmWave channel to approach the performance of the optimal fully digital precoder. Simulation results confirm that the proposed algorithm can approach the performance achieved by unconstrained digital beamforming solutions. This work has been partly funded by the Spanish Government through projects MIMOTEX (TEC2014-61776-EXP), CIES (RTC-2015-4213-7) and TERESA-ADA (TEC2017-90093-C3-2-R) (MINECO/AEI/FEDER, UE)
