Design and performance of an innovative hybrid constructed wetland for sustainable pig slurry treatment in small farms

Simple and suitable treatment of swine slurry from small farms is paramount especially in sensitive areas. This paper evaluates the viability of an innovative nature-based technology hybrid system (a Vertical Flow Constructed Wetland followed by a Horizontal Flow Constructed Wetland both planted with reeds - Phragmites australis) to treat swine slurry for further land application or discharge in water bodies with reduced nitrogen impact. Physicochemical parameters, bacterial indicators, surface deposits and biomass inside the filters were monitored. The hybrid configuration offered a dual function for simultaneous solid-liquid separation and biological treatment. Removal of organic matter and suspended solids was very high (>80% for SS and >75% for COD and BOD5) while the overall nitrogen load removal was 65%, due to the combined nitrification/denitrification processes, thus effectively reducing swine slurry nitrogen content. The influence of temperature and design and operational parameters on the treatment efficiency and the hydraulic behavior were also studied. The vertical constructed wetland achieved good hydraulic performance with no clogging problems, despite high pollutant loads. Some of the pollutants were retained and mineralized in the surface deposit layer, increasing around 20 cm each year. This organic biosolid layer improved filtration efficiency. The high ammonia contents interfered with the growth of Phragmites australis, while the high concentration of suspended solids and organic matter determine the operation and design to be implemented

Municipal Wastewater Treatment and Reuse for Agriculture in Senegal

    Get PDF
This paper reports on the performance of using a multistage constructed wetland (CW) to treat municipal raw wastewater and an analysis of its suitability for agricultural irrigation. The pilot plant consists of two stages of vertical flow CWs plus one stage of a horizontal CW built in 2018 with diferent local materials at the Gaston Berger University Campus, Saint Louis (Senegal). Each CW stage is composed of several filters with di erent type of media (silex, granite, or river gravel), filtering media depths, and macrophytes (Phragmites and Typha). The physicochemical and microbiological indicators were monitored over six months at each bed inlet and outlet to evaluate the e ciency and achievements of the Senegalese, European, and WHO regulations/recommendations for disposal or reuse in irrigation. This study demonstrates the viability of this new multistage CW design to treat raw municipal wastewater and produce an e uent of good quality suitable for reuse in agriculture. The removal of organic matter, suspended solids, and nutrients was very high (>95% for SS, BOD5 and N-NH4 +, >90% for COD and P-PO4 3 as was the reduction of microbiological indicators (fecal coliform reduction >5 log units and helminth egg removal of 100%). First, trends related to the influence of design (the type of gravel, filter depth, and type of macrophyte), operational modes, and the CW treatment eciency were determined. The use of non-crushed gravel and Typha spp. seemed to provide better removal rates. On the contrary, no diferences were found between the use of silex or granite gravel. For the studied Senegalese conditions under dry and hot climates, the preliminary results indicate that no resting periods are necessary for vertical flow CWs (VFCWs), thus resulting in a reduction in construction and operation costs. The main outcome of our study is evidence that multistage CWs can provide robust, cost-efective treatments, as well as allow for safe water reuse, which is imperative in areas with severe water scarcity and endemic microbiological waterborne diseases

Winged Aerial Robot: Modular Design Approach

    Get PDF
This paper presents the design, modelling, control, and experimental validation of a novel flapping wing aerial robot built with servo actuators that could be applied in search, rescue, and assistance to injured people. The proposed concept design is intended to facilitate the construction of this kind of aerial robots following a modular and reconfigurable approach, consisting of a series of Servo-Flapping Engine (SFE) modules attached to the carbon fibre tube used as fuselage, and a tail servo, covering the structure with a light nylon cloth. The SFE modules are built with a pair of servos that rotate the wing rods with desired amplitude, frequency, and relative phase. Combining two SFE modules, it is possible to generate different flapping patterns and control the orientation of the aerodynamic surfaces. The paper covers the parametrization of the design, the hardware/software implementation, as well as the modelling and control. The proposed design is validated through gliding and flapping tests in an outdoor environment.Comisión Europea - ERC Advanced Grant GRIFFIN Action 788247Comisión Europea - Proyecto AERIAL-CORE H2020-2019-87147

Electrochemical Stability of Rhodium-Platinum Core-Shell Nanoparticles : An Identical Location Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy Study

    Get PDF
Rhodium-platinum core-shell nanoparticles on a carbon support (Rh@Pt/C NPs) are promising candidates as anode catalysts for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. However, their electrochemical stability needs to be further explored for successful application in commercial fuel cells. Here we employ identical location scanning transmission electron microscopy to track the morphological and compositional changes of Rh@Pt/C NPs during potential cycling (10 000 cycles, 0.06-0.8 V, 0.5 HSO) down to the atomic level, which are then used for understanding the current evolution occurring during the potential cycles. Our results reveal a high stability of the Rh@Pt/C system and point toward particle detachment from the carbon support as the main degradation mechanism

    Get PDF
In recent years, studies of alcohol consumption motives associated with variables such as personality and parental models has become very important. The present study aims to analyze how personality variables, educational styles and degree of alcohol dependency influence consumption motives. In order to accomplish this goal, descriptive analysis, means comparisons, bivariate correlations, partial correlations and a logistic regression model have been done. In this line, a sample of 32 people who have been alcohol dependent at some point in their life, answer the following questionnaires: Short form Revised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire" (EPQ-RS) to identify personality (Neuroticism, Extraversion and Psychoticism), "Modified Drinking Motives Questionnaire Revised" (M DMQ-R) to analyze the reasons which lead them to alcohol use, "Alabama Parenting Questionnaire" (APQ) in a retrospective form in order to identify the parenting educational styles during their childhood and "Michigan Alcohol Screening Test" (MAST) which has been used as a screening tool and as a measure of alcoholic dependence degree too. The results show that mother involvement acts as a protective variable in relation to coping with anxiety motives and depression. Similarly, the father involvement also takes a protective role against coping with depression motives. On the other hand, neuroticism is positively associated with coping with depression motives and extraversion negatively correlates with conformity in bivariate correlations while regression analysis, show that personality acts as a mediator between educational styles and consumption motives
