Residual confounding or reverse causation cannot be excluded. Therefore, we estimated the causal association of milk consumption with stroke and CHD risk through instrumental variable (IV) and gene-outcome analyses. IV analysis included 29 328 participants (4611 stroke; 9828 CHD) of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-CVD (eight European countries) and European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition-Netherlands (EPIC-NL) case-cohort studies. rs4988235, a lactase persistence (LP) SNP which enables digestion of lactose in adulthood was used as genetic instrument. Intake of milk was first regressed on rs4988235 in a linear regression model. Next, associations of genetically predicted milk consumption with stroke and CHD were estimated using Prentice-weighted Cox regression. Gene-outcome analysis included 777 024 participants (50 804 cases) from MEGASTROKE (including EPIC-CVD), UK Biobank and EPIC-NL for stroke, and 483 966 participants (61 612 cases) from CARDIoGRAM, UK Biobank, EPIC-CVD and EPIC-NL for CHD. In IV analyses, each additional LP allele was associated with a higher intake of milk in EPIC-CVD (beta = 13 center dot 7 g/d; 95 % CI 8 center dot 4, 19 center dot 1) and EPIC-NL (36 center dot 8 g/d; 95 % CI 20 center dot 0, 53 center dot 5). Genetically predicted milk intake was not associated with stroke (HR per 25 g/d 1 center dot 05; 95 % CI 0 center dot 94, 1 center dot 16) or CHD (1 center dot 02; 95 % CI 0 center dot 96, 1 center dot 08). In gene-outcome analyses, there was no association of rs4988235 with risk of stroke (OR 1 center dot 02; 95 % CI 0 center dot 99, 1 center dot 05) or CHD (OR 0 center dot 99; 95 % CI 0 center dot 95, 1 center dot 03).     Ancient feeding ecology inferred from stable isotopic evidence from fossil horses in South America over the past 3 Ma

    [Background]: Stable isotope ratios (13C/12C and 18O/16O) in fossil teeth and bone provide key archives for understanding the ecology of extinct horses during the Plio-Pleistocene in South America; however, what happened in areas of sympatry between Equus (Amerhippus) and Hippidion is less understood.[Results]: Here, we use stable carbon and oxygen isotopes preserved in 67 fossil tooth and bone samples for seven species of horses from 25 different localities to document the magnitude of the dietary shifts of horses and ancient floral change during the Plio-Pleistocene. Dietary reconstructions inferred from stable isotopes of both genera of horses present in South America document dietary separation and environmental changes in ancient ecosystems, including C3/C4 transitions. Stable isotope data demonstrate changes in C4 grass consumption, inter-species dietary partitioning and variation in isotopic niche breadth of mixed feeders with latitudinal gradient.[Conclusions]: The data for Hippidion indicate a preference varying from C3 plants to mixed C3-C4 plants in their diet. Equus (Amerhippus) shows three different patterns of dietary partitioning Equus (A.) neogeus from the province of Buenos Aires indicate a preference for C3 plants in the diet. Equus (A.) andium from Ecuador and Equus (A.) insulatus from Bolivia show a preference for to a diet of mixed C3-C4 plants, while Equus (A.) santaeelenae from La Carolina (sea level of Ecuador) and Brazil are mostly C4 feeders. These results confirm that ancient feeding ecology cannot always be inferred from dental morphology. While the carbon isotope composition of horses skeletal material decreased as latitude increased, we found evidence of boundary between a mixed C3/C4 diet signal and a pure C4 signal around 32° S and a change from a mixed diet signal to an exclusively C3 signal around 35°S. We found that the horses living at high altitudes and at low to middle latitude still have a C4 component in their diet, except the specimens from 4000 m, which have a pure C3 diet. The change in altitudinal vegetation gradients during the Pleistocene is one of several possibilities to explain the C4 dietary component in horses living at high altitudes.     The relationship between self-reported ability emotional intelligence and risky driving behaviour: Consequences for accident and traffic ticket rate

    Road safety represents one of the main public health issues worldwide, and risky driving behaviour is one of the most predominant factors in traffic road accidents. The primary objective of this research was to clarify the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) abilities and the probability of engaging in risky behaviour during driving. Previous literature linking these constructs is limited, and research has yielded mixed findings. In the present study, 555 drivers from a Spanish community sample (Mage = 39.34, ranging from 18 to 79 years old; 49.19% women) were assessed on risky driving behaviour using the Dula Dangerous Driving Index while self-reported ability EI was measured using the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale. Gender, age, and driving experience were controlled. The results of this study revealed that a higher self-reported ability EI, particularly the ability to regulate emotions, was related to a lower tendency to engage in risky driving behaviours. In turn, self-reported ability EI was negatively and indirectly related to the number of road accidents and traffic tickets through the mediating effect of risky driving. The regulation of emotions (via direct and indirect effect) and the appraisal of the emotions of others (via direct effect) were the EI abilities that better predicted the number of accidents and traffic tickets.     This report provides an overview of Greater Mexico City and its food system. The city’s history, demographic characteristics, geography and economy are first discussed. The city’s urban food system and urban food security are then examined with a particular focus on formal and informal food retail, food expenditure patterns, and policies to combat hunger and food insecurity. Meeting the daily food demands of Mexico City’s over 20 million inhabitants requires the agricultural production of Mexico’s rural areas, its fishing industry and food imports. Food products arrive in the city from around the country in a combination of traditional and highly sophisticated modern systems of food supply and distribution. Structural changes in recent decades have led to modifications in the systems of supply, distribution and food consumption with vertically integrated companies now controlling aspects of the food chain. The system of supply and marketing of food products is also characterized by competition between public markets, large wholesale and retail companies, and neighbourhood convenience stores. While levels of household food insecurity (undernutrition) are lower than in other global cities of the South, Mexico City faces an epidemic of overnutrition, obesity and non-communicable diseases

    Density and reproductive characteristics of female brown bears in the Cantabrian Mountains, NW Spain

    Here we present annual nearest-neighbour distances (as a proxy of density) between females with cubs-of-the-year (hereafter FCOY) and reproductive characteristics of brown bears Ursus arctos in the Cantabrian Mountains (NW Spain), from 1989 to 2017. FCOY nearest-neighbour distances and reproduction parameters of 19 focal females followed over several consecutive years (from 2004 to 2017) were obtained from bears inhabiting the western sector of the Cantabrian Mountains, where most of the bear population resides. In contrast, general reproductive characteristics were studied in the whole Cantabrian Mountains (western and eastern sectors together) on a sample of 362 litter sizes and 695 cubs. Mean nearest-neighbour distance between FCOY was 2559 ± 1222 m (range = 1305–4757 m). Mean litter size was significantly larger in the west (1.8 ± 0.2 cubs) than in the east (1.3 ± 0.6 cubs). Mean litter size for the whole of the Cantabrian Mountains was 1.6 ± 0.3 cubs. Litter sizes of one, two and three cubs represented 33.4, 56.1 and 10.5% of observed family groups, respectively. Interannual variations in litter size were not significant for both the western and the eastern areas. Mean cub mortality was 0.2 ± 0.5 cubs and did not vary among years. Cub mortality per litter size was 3.9% for one cub, 69.2% for two cubs and 26.9% for three cubs. Mean reproductive rate of the 19 focal females was 1.5 ± 0.6 cubs (n = 58 litters). Litter size of focal FCOY did not differ from the litter size obtained from systematic observations in the whole Cantabrian Mountains. During this period, cub mortality occurred in 24.1% of the 58 litters. Females usually bred every second year (average litter interval = 2.2 years).     Bioethical in elderly care principles

    Investigación cuantitativa correlacional causal prospectivo, de corte transversal, desarrollado en el Servicio de Medicina “B” del Hospital Regional Docente de Trujillo - La Libertad Perú. Su propósito fue determinar el nivel de satisfacción del adulto mayor hospitalizado y su relación con la práctica de los principios bioéticos de la enfermera(o) en el Servicio de Medicina “B”. Se tomó en cuenta los fundamentos de Orlando. Los datos se recolectaron durante los meses de abril y mayo del 2012. La muestra estuvo conformada por 80 adultos mayores hospitalizados, seleccionados por muestreo probabilístico aleatorio simple. Resulta que el 62.50% de los adultos mayores hospitalizados se encuentran medianamente satisfechos con el servicio prestado por la enfermera, seguido por un 36.25% que evidencian satisfacción y el 1.25% se siente insatisfecho. En cuanto a la práctica de los principios bioéticos en adultos mayores hospitalizados, el 73% percibe una práctica regular de los principios bioéticos; seguido del 26% que perciben una buena práctica y finalmente solo el 1% consideran deficiente la práctica de los principios bioéticos. Se encontró una relación altamente significativa entre el nivel de satisfacción y la práctica de los principios bioéticos de la enfermera desde la percepción de los adultos mayores hospitalizados, con un nivel de significancia (p) de 0.000, menor de 0.05.Abstract : Prospective correlational causal quantitative research, cross-sectional, developed in the Medicine "B" Regional Hospital of Trujillo - La Libertad Peru. Its purpose was to determine the level of satisfaction of the elderly hospitalized and their relationship with the practice of bioethical principles Nurse (o) in the Medicine "B". It took into account the fundamentals of Orlando. Data were collected during the months of April and May 2012. The sample consisted of 80 elderly hospitalized, selected by random probability sampling simple. It turns out that 62.50% of hospitalized seniors are fairly satisfied with the service provided by the nurse, followed by a 36.25% evidencing satisfaction and 1.25% were dissatisfied. As for the practice of bioethical principles in older adults hospitalized, 73% earn a regular practice of bioethical principles; followed by 26% who perceive good practice and finally only 1% considered poor practice of bioethical principles. A highly significant relationship between the level of satisfaction and practice of bioethical principles nurse from the perception of older adults hospitalized with a level of significance (p) of 0.000, less than 0.05 was found

    Bioinformatic analysis of outer membrane proteome of Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria lactamica

    Two-dimensional electrophoresis (isoelectric focusing/SDS-PAGE) and Western-blotting techniques were used to analyze and compare common and/or specific outer-membrane proteins and antigens from Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria lactamica. Bioinformatic image analyses of proteome and immunoproteome maps indicated the presence of numerous proteins and several antigens shared by N. meningitidis and N. lactamica, although the inter-strain variation in the maps was of similar magnitude to the inter-species variation, and digital comparison of the maps did not reveal proteins found to be identical by MALDI-TOF fingerprinting analysis. PorA and RmpM, two relevant outer-membrane antigens, manifested as various spots at several different positions. While some of these were common to all the strains analyzed, others were exclusive to N. meningitidis and their electrophoretic mobilities were different than expected. One such spot, with a molecular mass of 19 kDa, may be the C-terminal fragment of RmpM (RmpM-Cter). The results demonstrate that computer-driven analysis based exclusively on spot positions in the proteome or immunoproteome maps is not a reliable approach to predict the identity of proteins or antigens; rather, other identification techniques are necessary to obtain accurate comparisons.
