    On extracting user-centric knowledge for personalised quality of service in 5G networks

An agglomerative clustering is used to identify these motifs according to the cells in which the user is camping during the day. Then, a technique to extract the personalised QoS observed by the user is proposed. The methodology is illustrated with an example that makes use of real measurements obtained from a specific customer of a 3G/4G operator. The presented results illustrate that the proposed user-centric approach is able to identify situations with poor user perceived QoS which could not be identified by a classical network-centric approach.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Power-efficient resource allocation in a heterogeneous network with cellular and D2D capabilities

    This paper focuses on a heterogeneous scenario in which cellular and wireless local area technologies coexist and in which mobile devices are enabled with device-to-device communication capabilities. In this context, this paper assumes a network architecture in which a given user equipment (UE) can receive mobile service either by connecting directly to a cellular base station or by connecting through another UE that acts as an access point and relays the traffic from a cellular base station. The paper investigates the optimization of the connectivity of different UEs with the target to minimize the total transmission power. An optimization framework is presented, and a distributed strategy based on Q-learning and softmax decision making is proposed as a means to solve the considered problem with reduced complexity. The proposed strategy is evaluated under different conditions, and it is shown that the strategy achieves a performance very close to the optimum. Moreover, significant transmission power reductions of approximately 40% are obtained with respect to the classical approach, in which all UEs are connected to the cellular infrastructure. For multi-cell scenarios, in which the optimum solution cannot be easily known a priori, the proposed approach is compared against a centralized genetic algorithm.     The importance of water in traditional gypsum works

    [EN] Until the second half of the 20th century, the traditional architecture of the Iberian Peninsula was directly linked to the resources available in its immediate surroundings, naturally diversification the built heritage throughout the territory. In its gypsiferous areas, we find a great versatility of construction systems in which the main binder used is traditional gypsum, although this material has been forgotten in the 20th and the 21st century architecture, meanwhile industrial gypsum currently plays a secondary role in the construction sector. Gypsum, like any traditional binder, is a material that is particularly sensitive to the amount of water with which it is mixed, which will be strongly linked to the technique of application, among other technological parameters. Thus, the final performance of the product is, among other things, a consequence of this water/gypsum ratio, as Francisco Arredondo states in some of his works. In them, the behaviour of an industrial gypsum is analysed as a function of the mixing water, relating it in turn to other parameters such as compressive strength, water absorption and bulk density.     Fast and accurate SER estimation for large combinational blocks in early stages of the design

    Soft Error Rate (SER) estimation is an important challenge for integrated circuits because of the increased vulnerability brought by technology scaling. This paper presents a methodology to estimate in early stages of the design the susceptibility of combinational circuits to particle strikes. In the core of the framework lies MASkIt , a novel approach that combines signal probabilities with technology characterization to swiftly compute the logical, electrical, and timing masking effects of the circuit under study taking into account all input combinations and pulse widths at once. Signal probabilities are estimated applying a new hybrid approach that integrates heuristics along with selective simulation of reconvergent subnetworks. The experimental results validate our proposed technique, showing a speedup of two orders of magnitude in comparison with traditional fault injection estimation with an average estimation error of 5 percent.     Assessment of bone-regeneration using adipose-derived stem cells in critical-size alveolar ridge defects: an experimental study in a dog model

    Purpose: To assess bone regeneration potential of a fibronectin- and adipose-derived stem cell-covered ceramic biomaterial in three-wall critical size alveolar ridge defects. Materials and methods: In 18 dogs, four dehiscence-type and critical size defects were created surgically in the edentulous alveolar ridge. Defects were randomly regenerated using biomaterials coated with particulate ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP), ß-TCP with fibronectin (Fn) (ß-TCP-Fn), and ß-TCP with a combination of Fn and autologous adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) (ß-TCP-Fn-ADSCs), leaving one defect as control. The animals were divided into three groups according to the time of euthanasia (1, 2, or 3 months of healing). Results: At the time of sacrifice, statistically significant differences between the four types of defects in the total area of bone regeneration, percentage of neoformed bone matrix, medullary space, or contact between particulate biomaterial and neoformed bone matrix were not found. All defects showed a significant increase in neoformed bone matrix as sacrifice was delayed, but a uniform pattern was not followed. Only defects treated with ß-TCP-Fn-ADSCs showed a significant increase in the bone regeneration area when animals sacrificed at 3 months were compared to those sacrificed at 1 month (P = .006). Conclusion: The use of ADSCs in bone regeneration processes of critical size defects of the alveolar ridge did not entail an advantage regarding greater bone regeneration as compared with other biomaterials. However, the use of ß-TCP coated with a combination of Fn and ADSCs appeared to favor stabilization of the regenerated area, allowing a more efficient maintenance of the space at 3 months of healing

Clinically it is characterized by severe gastrointestinal dysmotility associated with cachexia and a demyelinating sensorimotor polyneuropathy. Even though digestive manifestations are progressive and invariably lead to death, the features of gastrointestinal motor dysfunction have not been systematically evaluated. The objective of this study was to describe gastrointestinal motor dysfunction in MNGIE using state-of-the art techniques and to evaluate the relationship between motor abnormalities and symptoms. Methods Prospective study evaluating gastrointestinal motor function and digestive symptoms in all patients with MNGIE attended at a national referral center in Spain between January 2018 and July 2022. Key Results In this period, five patients diagnosed of MNGIE (age range 16–46 years, four men) were evaluated. Esophageal motility by high-resolution manometry was abnormal in four patients (two hypoperistalsis, two aperistalsis). Gastric emptying by scintigraphy was mildly delayed in four and indicative of gastroparesis in one. In all patients, small bowel high-resolution manometry exhibited a common, distinctive dysmotility pattern, characterized by repetitive bursts of spasmodic contractions, without traces of normal fasting and postprandial motility patterns. Interestingly, objective motor dysfunctions were detected in the absence of severe digestive symptoms. Conclusions and Inferences MNGIE patients exhibit a characteristic motor dysfunction, particularly of the small bowel, even in patients with mild digestive symptoms and in the absence of morphological signs of intestinal failure.     Seasonality in bacterial diversity in north-west Mediterranean coastal waters: assessment through clone libraries, fingerprinting and FISH

    We combined denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), catalysed reporter deposition-FISH (CARD-FISH) and clone libraries to investigate the seasonality of the bacterial assemblage composition in north-west Mediterranean coastal waters. DGGE analysis indicated that bacterial diversity changed gradually throughout the year, although with a clear distinction of the summer period. Alphaproteobacteria were the dominant group on an annual basis [29% of the DAPI (4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) counts by CARD-FISH, and 70% of the bacterial clones]. The SAR11 clade was most abundant during spring and summer (>20% of DAPI counts), while the Roseobacter clade was abundant primarily in winter and spring (up to 7% of DAPI counts). The phylum Bacteroidetes constituted the second most important group and was quantitatively uniform throughout the year (average 11% of the DAPI counts). Gammaproteobacteria showed a peak during summer (8% of DAPI counts), when most of them belonged to the NOR5 cluster. Clone libraries and CARD-FISH showed reasonable agreement in the quantitative proportions of Bacteroidetes and Gammaproteobacteria, but Alphaproteobacteria were overrepresented in clone libraries. Sequencing of the most predominant DGGE bands failed to detect the SAR11 group despite their high abundance.     Innovations through 5G-Crosshaul applications

    Proceeding of: 2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC) 27-30 junio 2016 Athens, GreeceA transport network for 5G envisions integrating the fronthaul and backhaul segments (namely 5G-Crosshaul) into a single transport network. This requires a fully integrated and unified management of fronthaul and backhaul resources in a sharable, scalable and flexible way. The integrated and unified management of the transport network resources follows the Software Defined Networking (SDN) principles of centralization, decoupling between control and data plane and application ecosystem. Innovation to enable context-aware resource management and to provide system-wide optimization of QoS, as well as energy related objectives, lies on defining key applications as logical decision entities to program the underlying network and packet forwarding behaviour. This paper presents a set of 5G-Crosshaul SDN applications with the scope of (i) managing the 5G-Crosshaul resources, including not only network but also computing and storage resources, and (ii) offering efficient media distribution and traffic offloading solutions. In order to develop these applications in a real system, we identify the interactions between the applications and the control plane.
