Considering that the companies with liquidity needs appeal to the financial
institutions but in a cycle of contraction and of increase of asymmetry of information
the companies with bigger difficulties are tempted to use certain “mechanisms” in order
to get their necessities of financing, the present work aims to study, in an empirical way,
the relationship between the value of Working Capital in Small and Medium Enterprises
Portuguese (SME) and the level of credit obtained from the Financial Institutions.
For the effect a comparative analysis is performed by comparing the national
universe of 2166 enterprises with CAE (Economic Activity Code) 25120 – “Similar
manufacture of doors and elements in metal” and the universe of 196 PME of the
district of Braga with the same CAE; this study is complemented with a case study of a
company of the sector in question.
The results obtained from these data and case study confirm that, in financial
terms, the companies of the district of Braga, in the related sector, are in a less
comfortable situation than the remaining national companies of the same sector; this
happens over all, because the companies of this district do not obtain a sufficient trade
credit level to face their responsibilities of short term. Moreover, the use by firms, of
adverse selection mechanisms allows them, in the short term, to solve some financial
problems but in the long term become, many times, the cause of their future failure
A apropriação do
conhecimento produzido nesta primeira fase do nosso projecto, deu-nos a
implementação da CDC.With this Project, our main goal is to contribute with the creation of new
comprehension bases about childrenʼs capacities in understanding their rights
as well as, the ability to participate on the local implementation of Childrenʼs
Right Convention, developed by the Child Friendly City project.
On this Project we recognize the impact that the Convention on the rights of the
child, in changing the way our society recognizes it or not, civil and political
rights, as well as economic and social rights inherent to all children, such
as commitment and obligation of States that are Parties on the Convention.
We characterized the City of Aveiro as a local context of economic
development, of Social Action and implementation of the CRC through out the
Child Friendly City initiative where the promotion of child participation and
citizenship of children has become an important part of the cityʼs political
agenda. As a reaction to all this dynamism, we searched the opinion of children
of the Aveiro City School Group regarding their rights as an abstract concept,
but also, as a source of dilemmas in their quotidian, under the inspiration of a
The knowledge appropriated on this first phase of our project, made us
understand the necessity of creating various conditions to allow children
apprehended their rights and their position as citizens participating in the
construction of a more child-friendly city.
In this sense, we searched answers in literature concerning the involvement of
children in participative researches and we also evolved ourselves, actively and
critically, with other adults and children from a minority group of the City, in a
process of co-construction of means to empower childrenʼs voices, in context of
the 22nd anniversary of Childrenʼs Rights.
These were the two instances where Childrenʼs Sociologic theoryʼs, regarding
practice and investigation instruments allowed us to recognize the importance
of children and youths opinions in decisive questions, in order to promote the
democratization of relations between adults and children, improving the city of
Aveiro and local implementation of the CRC
Covid-19 and scientific literacy
UIDB/04647/2020 UIDP/04647/2020The COVID-19 pandemic is, currently, the focus of all personal and collective actions at the social, cultural, economic, political and religious levels, among other dimensions of human life. This Letter to the Editor focuses on the overwhelming existence of fake news directly related to COVID-19, which permeate social networks and even the media, where journalists should act as gatekeepers and not fake-keepers. The methodology used in the collection and selection of data consisted of bibliographic research, in international databases, of publications on the topic under study and their content analysis. The results allow concluding that there is a need to promote scientific literacy in the general population but especially among journalists themselves.publishersversionpublishe
Reading on paper and scrolling text on a screen in academic learning
UID/SOC/04647/2019In the contemporary context, there is a growing practice of reading higher education teaching support material using digital media tools, via scrolling text on a screen on multiple devices (e.g. tablets, iPads and computers). These materials can be either specifically prepared digital texts or scanned printed texts, as opposed to the tradition of reading on paper. Thus, the following question emerges, which functions as the leitmotiv of the present study: what is the pedagogical potential of digital reading by scrolling text? In order to answer this question, we analysed a variety of information addressing this topic, which was collected from multiple sources. The analysis of this information allows concluding that, sometimes, rather than by the intentionality or pedagogical potential of the academic learning reading processes, this practice seems to be justified by the possibility of implementing a technology that tends to meet the actors' expectations (mainly students). There is the need for some caution in the mobilisation of digital reading in each specific situation, insofar as this reading is not always - necessarily and under any circumstance - the most fruitful. Besides the specificities that differentiate digital reading from printed reading (such as concentration and the relationship with new technologies), students' traits, their motivation, their knowledge about the use of the reading device or the type of digital document are some of the key elements to take into account for the success of learning through this reading process in academic learning, which, in addition, cannot overlook the importance of the type of teacher-student relationship established.publishersversionpublishe

Viral genetic clustering and transmission dynamics of the 2022 mpox outbreak in Portugal
Pathogen genome sequencing during epidemics enhances our ability to identify and understand suspected clusters and investigate their relationships. Here, we combine genomic and epidemiological data of the 2022 mpox outbreak to better understand early viral spread, diversification and transmission dynamics. By sequencing 52% of the confirmed cases in Portugal, we identified the mpox virus sublineages with the highest impact on case numbers and fitted them into a global context, finding evidence that several international sublineages probably emerged or spread early in Portugal. We estimated a 62% infection reporting rate and that 1.3% of the population of men who have sex with men in Portugal were infected. We infer the critical role played by sexual networks and superspreader gatherings, such as sauna attendance, in the dissemination of mpox virus. Overall, our findings highlight genomic epidemiology as a tool for the real-time monitoring and control of mpox epidemics, and can guide future vaccine policy in a highly susceptible population.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
SARS-CoV-2 introductions and early dynamics of the epidemic in Portugal
Genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in Portugal was rapidly implemented by
the National Institute of Health in the early stages of the COVID-19 epidemic, in collaboration
with more than 50 laboratories distributed nationwide.
Methods By applying recent phylodynamic models that allow integration of individual-based
travel history, we reconstructed and characterized the spatio-temporal dynamics of SARSCoV-2 introductions and early dissemination in Portugal.
Results We detected at least 277 independent SARS-CoV-2 introductions, mostly from
European countries (namely the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Italy, and Switzerland),
which were consistent with the countries with the highest connectivity with Portugal.
Although most introductions were estimated to have occurred during early March 2020, it is
likely that SARS-CoV-2 was silently circulating in Portugal throughout February, before the
first cases were confirmed.
Conclusions Here we conclude that the earlier implementation of measures could have
minimized the number of introductions and subsequent virus expansion in Portugal. This
study lays the foundation for genomic epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in Portugal, and highlights the need for systematic and geographically-representative genomic surveillance. We gratefully acknowledge to Sara Hill and Nuno Faria (University of Oxford) and
