African Intellectuals and Cultural Diversity: Discussions of the Ethnic Question in Equatorial Guinea

    Get PDF
Given that one of the Pan African Anthropology Association’s principle lines of research is the monitoring of ethnic conflicts in Africa, the contribution African intellectuals have made to the subject of cultural diversity management is a matter of great interest. The case study chosen for this paper is Equatorial Guinea, and the paper aims to provide an analysis of arguments that are raised in intellectual texts that deal with issues of identity and the country’s history. The paper will look at the legacy of colonialism in regards to the empowerment and discrimination of certain ethnic groups in relation to others, it will reflect on the construction of the post-colonial state and it will consider a reading of history that runs counter to the official one, that of the country being founded upon unity, by looking at examples of the ‘hijacking’ of the state and certain populations within a dictatorial context

Literature is a means to illustrate the historical destiny of the society it intends to characterize, whether on a more restricted level, like the social group, or on a more global one. On this level we can locate the Spanish speaking Atlantic world built due to the colonization, with 1492 as a symbolic date. Undoubtedly, the current world order reflects the heritage of the building of the modern colonial system

Demand for higher education programs: the impact of the Bologna process

    Get PDF
The Bologna process aims at creating a European Higher Education Area where intercountry mobility of students and sta?, as well as workers holding a degree, is facilitated. While several aspects of the process deserve wide public support, the reduction of the length of the first cycle of studies to three years, in several continental European countries where it used to last for four or five years, is less consensual. The paper checks the extent of public confidence in the restructuring of higher education currently underway, by looking at its implications on the demand for academic programs. It exploits the fact that some programs have restructured under the Bologna process and others have not, in Portugal. Precise quantification of the demand for each academic program is facilitated by the rules of access to higher education, in a nation-wide competition, where candidates must list up to six preferences of institution and program. We use regression analysis applied to count data, estimating negative binomial models. Results indicate that the programs that restructured to follow the Bologna principles were subject to higher demand than comparable programs that did not restructure, as if Bologna were understood as a quality stamp. This positive impact was reinforced if the institution was a leader, i.e. the single one in the country that restructured the program. Still an additional increase in demand was experienced by large programs that restructured to offer an integrated master degree, thus conforming to Bologna principles while not reducing the program duration.education policy; European Higher Education Area; economic, social and cultural integration; count data.

Funding Information: The first author has been partially supported by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Agencia Estatal de Investigación grants MTM2016-77278-P (FEDER), the Agència de Gestió d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca grant 2017SGR1617, and the H2020 European Research Council grant MSCA-RISE-2017-777911.Let Gk be a bouquet of circles, i.e., the quotient space of the interval [ 0 , k] obtained by identifying all points of integer coordinates to a single point, called the branching point of Gk. Thus, G1 is the circle, G2 is the eight space, and G3 is the trefoil. Let f: Gk→ Gk be a continuous map such that, for k> 1 , the branching point is fixed. If Per (f) denotes the set of periods of f, the minimal set of periods of f, denoted by MPer (f) , is defined as ⋂ g≃fPer (g) where g: Gk→ Gk is homological to f. The sets MPer (f) are well known for circle maps. Here, we classify all the sets MPer (f) for self-maps of the eight space.publishersversionpublishe

Considering that the companies with liquidity needs appeal to the financial institutions but in a cycle of contraction and of increase of asymmetry of information the companies with bigger difficulties are tempted to use certain “mechanisms” in order to get their necessities of financing, the present work aims to study, in an empirical way, the relationship between the value of Working Capital in Small and Medium Enterprises Portuguese (SME) and the level of credit obtained from the Financial Institutions. For the effect a comparative analysis is performed by comparing the national universe of 2166 enterprises with CAE (Economic Activity Code) 25120 – “Similar manufacture of doors and elements in metal” and the universe of 196 PME of the district of Braga with the same CAE; this study is complemented with a case study of a company of the sector in question. The results obtained from these data and case study confirm that, in financial terms, the companies of the district of Braga, in the related sector, are in a less comfortable situation than the remaining national companies of the same sector; this happens over all, because the companies of this district do not obtain a sufficient trade credit level to face their responsibilities of short term. Moreover, the use by firms, of adverse selection mechanisms allows them, in the short term, to solve some financial problems but in the long term become, many times, the cause of their future failure

Neste contexto, enfatiza-se o papel central da Ciência da Informação e dos seus profissionais na biblioteca escolar, em especial na transmissão de competências de literacia da informação.The aim of this article is to present a case study analyzing the informational behavior of a student’s sample users of the Vila do Conde school libraries. We tried to understand the students’ abilities to use the collection and the technological resources available in the library school space, namely the ways to locate and use free access documents as well as the ways of information searching. In this context, we emphasize the central role of Information Science and its professionals in school libraries especially to improve information literacy skills

On the Acheulean origin of mind and language

Finally, we would like to restate that this paper is an exercise in thinking about what archaeological data mean in terms of cognition. As we said at the beginning, a more complex integration between theory of cognition and archaeological data is needed. This paper is a tentative step in that direction. As new data will be published, it may be that many of the archaeological features we attribute to the Late Acheulean are found to be more ancient. That would mean that the timetable we are proposing would have to be changed, and probably that the conclusions about the kind of language present would have to be modified. But, we hope, it would not harm the links between broad psychological concepts and patterns of archaeological data that we are proposing

Objectives: To identify the degree of satisfaction with nursing care, the significant variables and contribute to the evolution of the scale. Methods: Descriptive, correlational, cross study, with 180 drug users. Data collected using the scale called “Satisfaction of users with the Nursing Health Center26”, between February and December 2012 in three treatment units in the region of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, Portugal. Results: Users indicated 83.3% satisfaction. The dimension “Information individualization” was the most marked (98.5%). The more stability in the programs, abstinence from stimulants and benzodiazepines and more nursing interventions, the greater the satisfaction. Better working conditions, specializing in mental health, younger ages and less experience of nurses also contributed to satisfaction. Four items of the scale were extracted, assuming new SUCECS22 designation. Conclusions: Satisfaction was high, influenced by structural variables of users, nurses and working conditions. The scale has proved suitable for assessment in this population.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
