    Limits of Binaries That Can Be Characterized by Gravitational Microlensing

    Due to the high efficiency of planet detections, current microlensing planet searches focus on high-magnification events. High-magnification events are sensitive to remote binary companions as well and thus a sample of wide-separation binaries are expected to be collected as a byproduct. In this paper, we show that characterizing binaries for a portion of this sample will be difficult due to the degeneracy of the binary-lensing parameters. This degeneracy arises because the perturbation induced by the binary companion is well approximated by the Chang-Refsdal lensing for binaries with separations greater than a certain limit. For binaries composed of equal mass lenses, we find that the lens binarity can be noticed up to the separations of 60\sim 60 times of the Einstein radius corresponding to the mass of each lens. Among these binaries, however, we find that the lensing parameters can be determined only for a portion of binaries with separations less than 20\sim 20 times of the Einstein radius.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

    Valproic Acid Downregulates the Expression of MGMT and Sensitizes Temozolomide-Resistant Glioma Cells

    Temozolomide (TMZ) has become a key therapeutic agent in patients with malignant gliomas; however, its survival benefit remains unsatisfactory. Valproic acid (VPA) has emerged as an anticancer drug via inhibition of histone deacetylases (HDACs), but the therapeutic advantages of a combination with VPA and TMZ remain poorly understood. The main aim of the present study was to determine whether an antitumor effect could be potentiated by a combination of VPA and TMZ, especially in TMZ-resistant cell lines. A combination of VPA and TMZ had a significantly enhanced antitumor effect in TMZ-resistant malignant glioma cells (T98 and U138). This enhanced antitumor effect correlated with VPA-mediated reduced O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) expression, which plays an important role in cellular resistance to alkylating agents. In vitro, the combination of these drugs enhanced the apoptotic and autophagic cell death, as well as suppressed the migratory activities in TMZ-resistant cell lines. Furthermore, in vivo efficacy experiment showed that treatment of combination of VPA and TMZ significantly inhibited tumor growth compared with the monotherapy groups of mice. These results suggest that the clinical efficacy of TMZ chemotherapy in TMZ-resistant malignant glioma may be improved by combination with VPA

    Detection Probability of a Low-Mass Planet for Triple Lens Events: Implication of Properties of Binary-Lens Superposition

    In view of the assumption that any planetary system is likely to be composed of more than one planet, and the multiple planet system with a large mass planet has more chance of detailed follow-up observations, the multiple planet system may be an efficient way to search for sub-Jovian planets. We compare the magnification pattern of the triple lens system with that of a best-fitted binary system composed of a star and a Jovian mass planet, and check the probability in detecting the low-mass secondary planet whose signature will be superposed on that of the primary Jovian mass planet. Detection probabilities of the low-mass planet in the triple lens system are quite similar to the probability in detecting such a low-mass planet in a binary system with a star and only a low-mass planet, which shows that the signature of a low-mass planet can be effectively detected even when it is concurrent with the signature of the more massive planet, implying that the binary superposition approximation works over a relatively broad range of planet mass ratio and separations, and the inaccuracies thereof do not significantly affect the detection probability of the lower mass secondary planet. Since the signature of the Jovian mass planet will be larger and lasts longer, thereby warranting more intensive follow-up observations, the actual detection rate of the low-mass planet in a triple system with a Jovian mass can be significantly higher than that in a binary system with a low-mass planet only. We conclude that it may be worthwhile to develop an efficient algorithm to search for `super-Earth' planets in the paradigm of the triple lens model for high-magnification microlensing events.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted by MNRA

    Clinical Outcomes of Patients treated for Cervical Pregnancy with or without Methotrexate

    The objective of this study is to describe the clinical outcomes of patients treated for cervical pregnancy with or without methotrexate (MTX) and to evaluate the effects of MTX in the treatment of cervical pregnancy. Between January 1993 and February 2000, 31 patients were diagnosed with cervical pregnancy. Twenty-two patients were treated with MTX chemotherapy and nine patients were treated with surgical procedures without MTX treatment. In the non-MTX treatment group, three patients underwent total abdominal hysterectomy, five required adjuvant procedures to control the bleeding during dilatation and curettage (D&C) and only one patient was treated with a simple D&C. In the MTX treatment group, fourteen (63.6%) patients were treated with only MTX and eight (36.4%) cases underwent concomitant procedures (simple curettage, curettage and Foley catheter tamponade, cervical cerclage, ligation of the descending branches of uterine arteries, or ligation of hypogastric arteries). The uterus was preserved in all cases and three women delivered healthy babies in their subsequent pregnancy. In conclusion, early diagnosis, appropriate MTX regimen in combination of necessary adjuvant conservative procedures could contribute to successful treatment with preservation of the uterus and future reproductive ability

    Modeling an inventory management in construction operations involving on site fabrication of raw materials

    ABSTRACT There are usually plenty of material inventories in a construction site. More inventories can meet unexpected demands, and also they may have an economical advantage by avoiding a probable escalation of raw material costs. On the other hand, these inventories also cause negative aspects to increase costs for storing redundant inventory as well as decreasing construction productivity. Therefore, a proper method of deciding an optimal level of material inventories while considering dynamic variations of resources under uncertainty is very crucial for the economical efficiency of construction projects. This research presents a stochastic modelling method for construction operations, particularly targeting a work process involving on-site fabrication of raw materials like iron-rebar process (delivery, cut and assembly, and placement). To develop the model, we apply the concept of factory physics to depict the overall components of a system. Then, an optimal inventory management model is devised to support purchase decisions where users can make timely actions on how much to order and when to buy raw materials. Also, optimal time lag, which minimizes the storage time for pre-assembled materials, is obtained. To verify this method, a real case is applied to elicit an optimal amount of inventory and time lag. It is found that average values as well as variability of inventory level decreased significantly so as to minimize economic costs related to inventory management under uncertain project condition

    Predictive factors for elevated prostate specific antigen and hematocrit levels during testosterone replacement therapy in patients with testosterone deficiency

    Objective: We examined risk factors associated with prostate specific antigen (PSA) and hematocrit (hct) elevation during testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) in patients with testosterone deficiency (TD). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients receiving TRT for ≥3 months. We investigated the following parameters: age, body mass index, comorbidities, TRT type, TRT duration, pre-TRT prostate volume, pre- and post-TRT serological tests, prostate biopsies, prostate cancer diagnoses, pre- and post-TRT aging male symptom scale scores, hct elevation, and PSA elevation. The patients were divided into two groups based on the PSA elevation status for comparison, following which we analyzed the predictive factors for PSA elevation. They were also divided into two groups based on hct elevation status. Results: The PSA elevation group showed a statistically significantly higher mean age, pre-TRT prostate volume, and PSA level compared to the non-elevation group. The PSA non-elevation group showed a significantly higher percentage of smokers, while the PSA elevation group showed a statistically significantly higher prevalence of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH_LUTS). The results demonstrated that a large pre-TRT prostate volume, high pre-TRT PSA levels, BPH_LUTS, and being a non-smoker were the contributing factors for PSA elevation. The hct elevation group showed statistically significantly higher pre-TRT Hb, hct, and post-TRT testosterone levels, and dyslipidemia rates, as well as a non-statistically significant prevalence of testosterone enanthate (TE) and testosterone undecanoate (TU) intramuscular injection. The pre-TRT Hb and hct levels were contributing factors for hct elevation during TRT. TE injection showed marginal statistical significance. Conclusions: We identified large prostate volumes, high PSA levels, BPH_LUTS, and being non-smokers prior to TRT as risk factors for PSA elevation during TRT. Interestingly, we found that TRT-induced hct elevation was likely to occur in patients with high pre-TRT Hb and hct levels. Additionally, the hct levels should be monitored when using TE for TRT

    Regulation of Mucin Gene Expression by CREB via a Nonclassical Retinoic Acid Signaling Pathway▿

    Vitamin A and its metabolite retinoic acid (RA) are essential elements for normal lung development and the differentiation of lung epithelial cells. We previously showed that RA rapidly activated cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (CREB) in a nonclassical manner in normal human tracheobronchial epithelial (NHTBE) cells. In the present study, we further demonstrated that this nonclassical signaling of RA on the activation of CREB plays a critical role in regulating the expression of airway epithelial cell differentiation markers, the MUC2, MUC5AC, and MUC5B genes. We found that RA rapidly activates the protein kinase Cα isozyme and transmits the activation signal to CREB via the Raf/MEK/extracellular signal-regulated kinase/p90 ribosomal S6 kinase (RSK) pathway. Activated RSK translocated from the cytoplasm to the nucleus, where it phosphorylates CREB. Activated CREB then binds to a cis-acting replication element motif on the promoter (at nucleotides [nt] −878 to −871) of the MUC5AC gene. The depletion of CREB using small interfering RNA abolished not only the RA-induced MUC5AC but also RA-induced MUC2 and MUC5B. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that CREB activation via this nonclassical RA signaling pathway may play an important role in regulating the expression of mucin genes and mediating the early biological effects of RA during normal mucous differentiation in NHTBE cells
