Making Another World Possible identifies the British contribution to the genealogy of modern green and anti-capitalist thinking by examining left libertarian ideologies in the late 19th and early 20th century Britain and highlighting their influence on present day radical thought. As capitalism heralded the triumph of technology, greater production, and a new urban industrial society, some imagined alternatives to this notion of progress based on endless economic growth. The book examines the development of ideas from these dissidents who included communists, class warriors, free thinkers, secularists, and Christian communitarians. All shared the same beliefs that the benefits of industrialism could only be realized through equality and that urban culture depended on a healthy agriculture and harmony with the natural world - concerns that are still of great importance today. The role of education in the circular built environment: Analysis of Australian educational programs impact on construction and demolition waste management

Resource circularity has become a necessity in the built environment sector. A significant amount of construction and demolition (C&D) waste is generated worldwide. This waste results from poor resource efficiency in the sector. Australia is among the lowest-ranked countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) regarding the sector's resource efficiency. A circular economy and resource efficiency can be achieved primarily through education, enforcement, and encouragement in the sector. Of these three elements, education is the focus of this paper. Education can generate attitudinal and behavioural change among stakeholders to move towards effective waste management (WM). This study aims to determine whether current Australian educational programs have successfully achieved circular economy objectives and improved resource efficiency. This paper provides an insightful overview of the programs and proposes a framework to evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs in a circular built environment. Lastly, it recommends a few practical suggestions to improve their effectiveness in the built environment sector

Creation and Stimulation of End-markets for Construction and Demolition Waste in Australia

The generation of construction and demolition (C&D) waste from infrastructure, and building and housing activity across Australia is increasing, leading to C&D waste management becoming a high priority for federal, state, territory and local governments, private industry and the general public. In response to industry and public concerns related to unsustainable C&D waste management, this project aimed to enhance understanding of the operation and capacity of end-markets for C&D waste recyclables in Australian jurisdictions. This understanding involves the integration of circular economy principles and a cradle-to-cradle approach into C&D waste management systems in the Australian context

A microfluidic system for studying ageing and dynamic single-cell responses in budding yeast

Recognition of the importance of cell-to-cell variability in cellular decision-making and a growing interest in stochastic modeling of cellular processes has led to an increased demand for high density, reproducible, single-cell measurements in time-varying surroundings. We present ALCATRAS (A Long-term Culturing And TRApping System), a microfluidic device that can quantitatively monitor up to 1000 cells of budding yeast in a well-defined and controlled environment. Daughter cells are removed by fluid flow to avoid crowding allowing experiments to run for over 60 hours, and the extracellular media may be changed repeatedly and in seconds. We illustrate use of the device by measuring ageing through replicative life span curves, following the dynamics of the cell cycle, and examining history-dependent behaviour in the general stress response

Enhancing the Use of Products with Recycled Contents in the Australian Construction Industry

This book presents an extensive review of various national and international literature, an analysis of relevant policies and guidelines, and an evaluation of key stakeholders’ sentiments. It provides valuable insights into five key areas: (1) analysis of national and jurisdictional policy frameworks that affect the creation and stimulation of end-markets for waste materials; (2) assessment of the operation of existing end-markets for five strategic construction materials; (3) exploration of the application of sustainable procurement policies and practices at state, national and international levels; (4) evaluation of impacts of COVID-19 on construction and demolition waste industry; and (5) identification of key factors affecting construction and demolition waste end-market creation and stimulation, and building a model for waste market development
