    Digital 3D reconstruction of historical textile fragment

    This paper presents a new methodology for reproducing historic fragment in 3D with realistic behaviour, providing users with a feel for the fragment detailing. The fragment piece originates from the English National Trust archive held in the collection at Claydon House. The aim is to utilize a combination of both 2D pattern software and state-of-the-art 3D technology to recreate a compelling and a highly realistic representation of historic fragment. The process starts with investigation of the textile construction. Textile fragments will be incomplete and/or have a level of deterioration therefore various recording techniques are to be explored. A combination of both photography and 3D scanning technology will be utilized throughout the methodology to accurately record the digital data. The equipment setting will be analyzed in order to produce an accurate working method. This paper forming part of a larger study, will specifically focus on the methodology for recording data from one fragment piece

    Improvement of Pheromone Trapping in Low Density Populations of \u3ci\u3eChoristoneura Pinus Pinus\u3c/i\u3e (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)

    Pheromone baited bucket traps (e.g., Multipher) are popular as a monitoring tool for the jack pine budworm, Choristoneura pinus pinus Freeman (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), in Canada. However, there is no evidence to support their use when budworm populations are low. We therefore evaluated the capture rate of bucket traps at two placement heights (2 vs 6 m) in two jack pine forests in 2011, having low (≤5 fifth instars per mfoliated branch length) budworm populations. Compared to wing traps (e.g., Pherocon 1C), the trap design used initially to evaluate efficacy of the C. pinus pheromone, bucket traps caught fewer C. pinus and capture rates of both trap designs did not differ significantly between the two heights tested. Loss of bucket traps at 2 m, due to black bears, suggested that higher placement of traps was warranted to maintain the integrity of the array. However, wing traps are recommended due to their ability to consistently catch more moths when C. pinus populations are low

    Everybody Knows: Engaged Research and the Changing Role of the Academic

    The rise of the impact and engagement agendas has challenged the role of the academic, and particularly the relationship between the academic, knowledge and the wider public. In this article, we propose that, alongside the existing models of ‘knowledge transfer’ and ‘knowledge exchange’, academic engagement with external audiences can also be conceptualised as a multidimensional ‘knowledge network’. We adopt a case study approach to explore and illustrate what such a knowledge network looks like in practice, and we consider the implications of thinking about university engagement activities in these terms, with particular emphasis on what it means for the shifting role of the academic

    MPhil musical composition: commentaries

    My interest in musical composition covers a broad range of styles and genres and this MPhil Submission is designed to reflect that range by a representative sample of my work. There are five contrasting works, four for electro-acoustic media and one notated piece for a small chamber orchestra. ‘sk8erpunk’ is a one minute piece (written for the Vox Novus radio broadcasts), utilizing treated samples of skateboard sounds and has an accompanying video. ‘Lines of Defence’ is the soundtrack for a film on coastal erosion, with the sound process realized using SuperCollider software. ‘Untitled’ is a notated work for a small chamber orchestra. ‘Aquanautics’, inspired by Evan Parker, uses treated sounds of a party horn to build textures. ‘Storm Ghosts’ is an experiment in sampling, mostly from acknowledged commercial music, to create a soundscape reflecting imaginings of the far north-west coast of Scotland

    The role of science in physical natural hazard assessment : report to the UK Government by the Natural Hazard Working Group

    Following the tragic Asian tsunami on 26 December 2004, the Prime Minister asked the Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser, Sir David King, to convene a group of experts (the Natural Hazard Working Group) to advise on the mechanisms that could and should be established for the detection and early warning of global physical natural hazards. 2. The Group was asked to examine physical hazards which have high global or regional impact and for which an appropriate early warning system could be put in place. It was also asked to consider the global natural hazard frameworks currently in place and under development and their effectiveness in using scientific evidence; to consider whether there is an existing appropriate international body to pull together the international science community to advise governments on the systems that need to be put in place, and to advise on research needed to fill current gaps in knowledge. The Group was asked to make recommendations on whether a new body was needed, or whether other arrangements would be more effective

    Bridge pier scour under pressure flow conditions

    The probability of pressurized flow conditions occurring in existing bridges is forecast to increase due to possible changes in extreme precipitation, storm surges and flooding predicted under climate change scenarios. The presence of a pressure flow is generally associated with scouring processes in proximity to the bridge. Scouring can also occur around bridge piers, possibly causing infrastructure failure. While there is a vast literature on bridge pier scour and pressure flow scour, only a few studies have investigated their combined effect. This study will provide a new overview of the main features of bridge pier scour under pressurized flow conditions, based on laboratory experiences. Special focus is placed on the analysis of the flow features under pressure and free surface conditions and to the temporal evolution of the scour. A comparison with existing literature data is also conducted. The results highlight the nonlinear nature of scour processes and the need to consider pressurized flow conditions during structural design, as the interaction between pressure flow and the bridge pier strongly influences scour features and leads to scour depths much greater than the sum of the individual scours created only by pressure flow or pier presence

    In this paper the new concept of super-bridges, i.e. kilometre-long bridges suspended over carbon nanotube cables, is introduced.
