Paper Session I-A - Microencapsulation of Drugs: New cancer therapies and improved drug delivery from microgravity research

Experiments on the ISS include encapsulation of several different anti-cancer drugs, magnetic triggering particles, and encapsulation of genetically engineered DNA. Eight experiments, using the MEPS-II apparatus, were conducted to study the limitations of the fluid shear and g- dependent forces. These studies included: 1) formation of anti-tumor microcapsules containing drugs for “Chemoembolization” of vascularized tumors, 2) formation of microcapsules containing a photo-activated drug which can be used for Photo Dynamic Therapy of solid tumors by activation with near infrared light (630 nm), 3) coencapsulation of magnetic trigger particles and anti-tumor drugs, and 4) encapsulation of plasmid DNA. The Microencapsulation Electrostatic Processing System (MEPS-II) is an automated apparatus modified for use in the ISS Express Rack. The process brings together two immiscible liquids, restricting fluid shear to permitting surface tension forces to predominate at the interface of the fluids. Microcapsules were recovered from all 8 experiments and are currently being analyzed for size distribution and drug content. Six NASA Patents have issued from the space research and several more are pending. The preliminary results from the Increment 5 - UF-2 experiments have provided new insight into the best formulations and conditions required to produce microcapsules of different drugs, esp. special capsules containing diagnostic imaging materials and triggered release particles. Co-encapsulation of multiple drugs and Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) drugs has enabled new engineering strategies for production of microcapsules on Earth designed for direct delivery into cancer tissues. Other microcapsules have now been made for treatment of deep tissue infections, clotting disorders, and to provide delivery of genetic engineered materials for potential gene therapy approaches. The MEPS-II apparatus remains in the ISS awaiting microencapsulation experiments to be conducted in micro-g, and returned to Earth for analysis

Malaysia has experience a low penetration for Takaful business despite many growing operators in insurance industry. After 25 years in operation, it is time that Takaful industry is evaluated in terms of its performance. This study provides better understanding on Takaful customer satisfaction in a case of Kota Bharu. Population of this study are customers who have subscribing family Takaful plans in selected Takaful operator at least one years’ experience based on convenience sampling method. A total of 196 questionnaires were distributed and 163 questionnaires were returned. Therefore, this study revealed that the Product, Pricing, Promotion, People and Process towards Takaful operator were positively influence customer satisfaction. Finally, the study found that the Process indicates as the most critical factor that influences customer satisfaction toward Takaful Operator.© 2019 Sciedu Pressfi=vertaisarvioitu|en=peerReviewed

Effect of temperature and residence time on the characteristics of torrefied food

    Get PDF
Malaysia generated food waste (FW) is approximately 15 000 tons every day and expected to increase every year. Currently, Malaysia is applying the landfilling method to dispose all of the MSW which cause potential threat towards the environment and society. FW may be converted into more valuable products through reutilizing as a renewable energy source through torrefaction. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of torrefaction temperature and residence time towards the characteristics of torrefied FW. The torrefaction process was carried out in a fixed bed reactor with continuous flow of nitrogen, at various torrefaction temperature (260 to 320 °C) and residence time (15 to 60 minutes). The torrefied FW was evaluated in terms of its mass yield, thermal behaviour and the produced functional groups through the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It can be observed that the higher the torrefaction temperature and residence time reduces the mass yield. Meanwhile, the FTIR spectra for raw and torrefied FW at different residence time was executed the functional group of C=C, C=O, C-O and C-H were present in sample. From this study, it is established that there were significant effects of both parameters towards the characteristic of FW

Integrating microwave heating pre-treatment to improve torrefaction of food waste

    Get PDF
The municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal is one of the main issues of concern, as it affects environmental and sustainable development in Malaysia. Food waste (FW) is the highest constituent in the MSW and should be utilized to produce more valuable products such as energy. However, FW is characterized by its high moisture content and low high heating value (HHV) which lower the energy efficiency during energy production process. In order to overcome this problem, torrefaction assisted by microwave heating pre-treatment is used to upgrade FW properties to produce solid biofuel which is called as biochar. The objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility of microwave (MW) heating power at 240 W for 5 min to enhance the quality of torrefied FW. The torrefied FW was then characterized in terms of ultimate and proximate analysis, HHV, mass and energy yield as well as its functional groups. The highest HHV achieved was 24.21 MJ/kg when torrefied at 320 °C for 45 min. This suggests that torrefied FW with MW heating pre-treatment has the potential to be used as an energy source
