Fast High-Responsivity Few-Layer MoTe2 Photodetectors
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Wiley via the DOI in this record. The Transition Metal Dichalcogenide MoTe2 is fabricated via mechanical exfoliation into few-layer Field Effect Transistors (FETs) having a hole mobility of 2.04 V/cm2/s. Four-layer MoTe2 FETs show a high photoresponsivity of 6 A/W and a response time, at around 160 μs, over 100 times faster than previously reported for MoTe2. Few-layer MoTe2 thus appears as a strong candidate for high speed and high sensitivity photodetection applications.CDW would like to acknowledge funding via EPSRC grants EP/M015173/1 and EP/M015130/1. On the role of the nature and density of acid sites on mesostructured aluminosilicates dehydration catalysts for dimethyl ether production from CO2
In this work, we designed four different mesostructured acidic materials to be used as methanol dehydration catalysts for the one-pot CO2-to-DME process, in the form of physical mixtures with a Cu/ZnO/Al2O3-based commercial redox catalyst (CZA). The studied systems consist in a mesostructured gamma-Al2O3 and three mesostructured aluminosilicates (namely Al-MCM-41, Al-SBA-15, and Al-SBA-16) with the same Si/Al ratio (= 15) but significantly different textural properties. The main goal of this work is to understand how the textural features can influence the acidic properties (typology, amount, strength, surface density) and, consequently, how catalytic performances can be correlated with acidic features. On this note, we found that the systems presenting both Bronsted and Lewis sites (namely the three aluminosilicates) show much better catalytic performances than gamma-Al2O3, that only features Lewis sites, thus implying that Bronsted sites are more active towards methanol dehydration than Lewis sites. The three aluminosilicates, despite presenting comparable amounts of Bronsted sites, show significantly different performances in terms of selectivity to DME; particularly, Al-SBA-16, the system with the lowest surface area, proved to be the most efficient catalyst. This finding led us to infer that, besides Bronsted acidity, a high surface density of acid sites is a key factor to obtain a high dehydration activity; being methanol dehydration a bi-molecular reaction, the close proximity of two acid sites would indeed favor the kinetics of the process
The protective role of pregnancy in breast cancer
Epidemiological, clinical, and experimental data indicate that the risk of developing breast cancer is strongly dependent on the ovary and on endocrine conditions modulated by ovarian function, such as early menarche, late menopause, and parity. Women who gave birth to a child when they were younger than 24 years of age exhibit a decrease in their lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, and additional pregnancies increase the protection. The breast tissue of normally cycling women contains three identifiable types of lobules, the undifferentiated Lobules type 1 (Lob 1) and the more developed Lobules type 2 and Lobules type 3. The breast attains its maximum development during pregnancy and lactation (Lobules type 4). After menopause the breast regresses in both nulliparous and parous women containing only Lob 1. Despite the similarity in the lobular composition of the breast at menopause, the fact that nulliparous women are at higher risk of developing breast cancer than parous women indicates that Lob 1 in these two groups of women might be biologically different, or might exhibit different susceptibility to carcinogenesis. Based on these observations it was postulated that Lob 1 found in the breast of nulliparous women and of parous women with breast cancer never went through the process of differentiation, retaining a high concentration of epithelial cells that are targets for carcinogens and are therefore susceptible to undergo neoplastic transformation. These epithelial cells are called Stem cells 1, whereas Lob 1 structures found in the breast of early parous postmenopausal women free of mammary pathology, on the contrary, are composed of an epithelial cell population that is refractory to transformation, called Stem cells 2. It was further postulated that the degree of differentiation acquired through early pregnancy has changed the 'genomic signature' that differentiates Lob 1 of the early parous women from that of the nulliparous women by shifting the Stem cells 1 to Stem cells 2 that are refractory to carcinogenesis, making this the postulated mechanism of protection conferred by early full-term pregnancy. The identification of a putative breast stem cell (Stem cells 1) has, in the past decade, reached a significant impulse, and several markers also reported for other tissues have been found in the mammary epithelial cells of both rodents and humans. Although further work needs to be carried out in order to better understand the role of the Stem cells 2 and their interaction with the genes that confer them a specific signature, collectively the data presently available provide evidence that pregnancy, through the process of cell differentiation, shifts Stem cells 1 to Stem cells 2 – cells that exhibit a specific genomic signature that could be responsible for the refractoriness of the mammary gland to carcinogenesis
The anti-inflammatory effects of dimethyl fumarate in astrocytes involve glutathione and haem oxygenase-1
DMF (dimethyl fumarate) exerts anti-inflammatory and pro-metabolic effects in a variety of cell types, and a formulation (BG-12) is being evaluated for monotherapy in multiple sclerosis patients. DMF modifies glutathione (GSH) levels that can induce expression of the anti-inflammatory protein HO-1 (haem oxygenase-1). In primary astrocytes and C6 glioma cells, BG-12 dose-dependently suppressed nitrite production induced by either LI [LPS (lipopolysaccharide) at 1 \u3bcg/ml plus IFN\u3b3 (interferon \u3b3) at 20 units/ml] or a mixture of pro-inflammatory cytokines, with greater efficacy in C6 cells. BG-12 reduced NOS2 (nitric oxide synthase 2) mRNA levels and activation of a NOS2 promoter, reduced nuclear levels of NF-\u3baB (nuclear factor \u3baB) p65 subunit and attenuated loss of I\u3baB\u3b1 (inhibitory \u3baB\u3b1) in both cell types, although with greater effects in astrocytes. In astrocytes, LI decreased mRNA levels for GSHr (GSH reductase) and GCL (c-glutamylcysteine synthetase), and slightly suppressed GSHs (GSH synthetase) mRNAs. Co-treatment with BG-12 prevented those decreased and increased levels above control values. In contrast, LI reduced GSHp (GSH peroxidase) and GCL in C6 cells, and BG-12 had no effect on those levels. BG-12 increased nuclear levels of Nrf2 (nuclear factor-erythroid 2 p45 subunit-related factor 2), an inducer of GSH-related enzymes, in astrocytes but not C6 cells. In astrocytes, GSH was decreased by BG-12 at 2 h and increased at 24 h. Prior depletion of GSH using buthionine-sulfoximine increased the ability of BG-12 to reduce nitrites. In astrocytes, BG-12 increased HO-1 mRNA levels and effects on nitrite levels were blocked by an HO-1 inhibitor. These results demonstrate that BG-12 suppresses inflammatory activation in astrocytes and C6 glioma cells, but with distinct mechanisms, different dependence on GSH and different effects on transcription factor activation
A cross-national study on the antecedents of work–life balance from the fit and balance perspective
Drawing on the perceived work–family fit and balance perspective, this study investigates demands and resources as antecedents of work–life balance (WLB) across four countries (New Zealand, France, Italy and Spain), so as to provide empirical cross-national evidence. Using structural equation modelling analysis on a sample of 870 full time employees, we found that work demands, hours worked and family demands were negatively related to WLB, while job autonomy and supervisor support were positively related to WLB. We also found evidence that resources (job autonomy and supervisor support) moderated the relationships between demands and work–life balance, with high resources consistently buffering any detrimental influence of demands on WLB. Furthermore, our study identified additional predictors of WLB that were unique to some national contexts. For example, in France and Italy, overtime hours worked were negatively associated with WLB, while parental status was positively associated with WLB. Overall, the implications for theory and practice are discussed.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Probe Branes, Time-dependent Couplings and Thermalization in AdS/CFT
We present holographic descriptions of thermalization in conformal field
theories using probe D-branes in AdS X S space-times. We find that the induced
metrics on Dp-brane worldvolumes which are rotating in an internal sphere
direction have horizons with characteristic Hawking temperatures even if there
is no black hole in the bulk AdS. The AdS/CFT correspondence applied to such
systems indeed reveals thermal properties such as Brownian motions and AC
conductivities in the dual conformal field theories. We also use this framework
to holographically analyze time-dependent systems undergoing a quantum quench,
where parameters in quantum field theories, such as a mass or a coupling
constant, are suddenly changed. We confirm that this leads to thermal behavior
by demonstrating the formation of apparent horizons in the induced metric after
a certain time.Comment: LaTeX, 47 pages, 14 figures; Typos corrected and references added

New D1-D5-P geometries from string amplitudes
We derive the long range supergravity fields sourced by a D1-D5-P bound state
from disk amplitudes for massless closed string emission. We suggest that since
the parameter controlling the string perturbation expansion for this
calculation decreases with distance from the bound state, the resulting
asymptotic fields are valid even in the regime of parameters in which there is
a classical black hole solution with the same charges. The supergravity fields
differ from the black hole solution by multipole moments and are more general
than those contained within known classes of solutions in the literature,
whilst still preserving four supersymmetries. Our results support the
conjecture that the black hole solution should be interpreted as a
coarse-grained description rather than an exact description of the
gravitational field sourced by D1-D5-P bound states in this regime of
parameters.Comment: 48 pages, 2 figures, v2: typos correcte
Alcohol dehydrogenase activities and ethanol tolerance in Anastrepha (Diptera, Tephritidae) fruit-fly species and their hybrids
The ADH (alcohol dehydrogenase) system is one of the earliest known models of molecular evolution, and is still the most studied in Drosophila. Herein, we studied this model in the genus Anastrepha (Diptera, Tephritidae). Due to the remarkable advantages it presents, it is possible to cross species with different Adh genotypes and with different phenotype traits related to ethanol tolerance. The two species studied here each have a different number of Adh gene copies, whereby crosses generate polymorphisms in gene number and in composition of the genetic background. We measured certain traits related to ethanol metabolism and tolerance. ADH specific enzyme activity presented gene by environment interactions, and the larval protein content showed an additive pattern of inheritance, whilst ADH enzyme activity per larva presented a complex behavior that may be explained by epistatic effects. Regression models suggest that there are heritable factors acting on ethanol tolerance, which may be related to enzymatic activity of the ADHs and to larval mass, although a pronounced environmental effect on ethanol tolerance was also observed. By using these data, we speculated on the mechanisms of ethanol tolerance and its inheritance as well as of associated traits
Phenotypic Variation and Bistable Switching in Bacteria
Microbial research generally focuses on clonal populations. However, bacterial cells with identical genotypes frequently display different phenotypes under identical conditions. This microbial cell individuality is receiving increasing attention in the literature because of its impact on cellular differentiation, survival under selective conditions, and the interaction of pathogens with their hosts. It is becoming clear that stochasticity in gene expression in conjunction with the architecture of the gene network that underlies the cellular processes can generate phenotypic variation. An important regulatory mechanism is the so-called positive feedback, in which a system reinforces its own response, for instance by stimulating the production of an activator. Bistability is an interesting and relevant phenomenon, in which two distinct subpopulations of cells showing discrete levels of gene expression coexist in a single culture. In this chapter, we address techniques and approaches used to establish phenotypic variation, and relate three well-characterized examples of bistability to the molecular mechanisms that govern these processes, with a focus on positive feedback.
Quantitative Assessment of Mammary Gland Density in Rodents Using Digital Image Analysis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Rodent models have been used extensively to study mammary gland development and for studies of toxicology and carcinogenesis. Mammary gland gross morphology can visualized via the excision of intact mammary gland chains following fixation and staining with carmine using a tissue preparation referred to as a whole mount. Methods are described for the automated collection of digital images from an entire mammary gland whole mount and for the interrogation of digital data using a "masking" technique available with Image-Pro® plus image analysis software (Mediacybernetics. Silver Spring, MD).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Parallel to mammographic analysis in humans, measurements of rodent mammary gland density were derived from area-based or volume-based algorithms and included: total circumscribed mammary fat pad mass, mammary epithelial mass, and epithelium-free fat pad mass. These values permitted estimation of absolute mass of mammary epithelium as well as breast density. The biological plausibility of these measurements was evaluated in mammary whole mounts from rats and mice. During mammary gland development, absolute epithelial mass increased linearly without significant changes in mammographic density. Treatment of rodents with tamoxifen, 9-cis-retinoic acid, or ovariectomy, and occurrence of diet induced obesity decreased both absolute epithelial mass and mammographic density. The area and volumetric methods gave similar results.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Digital image analysis can be used for screening agents for potential impact on reproductive toxicity or carcinogenesis as well as for mechanistic studies, particularly for cumulative effects on mammary epithelial mass as well as translational studies of mechanisms that explain the relationship between epithelial mass and cancer risk.</p
