A new dataset of global irrigation areas from 2001 to 2015

About 40% of global crop production takes place on irrigated land, which accounts for approximately 20% of the global farmland. The great majority of freshwater consumption by human societies is associated with irrigation, which contributes to a major modification of the global water cycle by enhancing evapotranspiration and reducing surface and groundwater runoff. In many regions of the world irrigation contributes to streamflow and groundwater depletion, soil salinization, cooler microclimate conditions, and altered land-atmosphere interactions. Despite the important role played by irrigation in food security, water cycle, soil productivity, and near-surface atmospheric conditions, its global extent remains poorly quantified. To date global maps of irrigated land are often based on estimates from circa year 2000. Here we apply artificial intelligence methods based on machine learning algorithms to satellite remote sensing and monthly climate data to map the spatial extent of irrigated areas between 2001 and 2015. We provide global annual maps of irrigated land at ≈9km resolution for the 2001-2015 and we make this dataset available online

To date, only a few studies have directly compared nonpenetrating surgery (NPS) and trabeculectomy (TE). Therefore, there is no strong evidence as to which surgical technique leads to the best results in terms of ocular hypotensive effect and safety

Protection from arthritis and myositis in a mouse model of acute chikungunya virus disease by bindarit, an inhibitor of monocyte chemotactic protein-1 synthesis

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is associated with outbreaks of infectious rheumatic disease in humans. Using a mouse model of CHIKV arthritis and myositis, we show that tumor necrosis factor-α, interferon-γ, and monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1) were dramatically induced in tissues from infected mice. The same factors were detected in the serum of patients with CHIKV-induced polyarthralgia and polyarthritis, with MCP-1 levels being particularly elevated. Bindarit (MCP inhibitor) treatment ameliorated CHIKV disease in mice. Histological analysis of muscle and joint tissues showed a reduction in inflammatory infiltrate in infectedmice treated with bindarit. These results suggest that bindarit may be useful in treating CHIKV-induced arthritides in humans.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta

Biological Characteristics and Medical Treatment of Breast Cancer in Young Women—A Featured Population: Results from the NORA Study

Background. The present paper described the biological characteristics and clinical behavior of young women in the cohort NORA study Patients and Methods. From 2000–2002, patients (N > 3500) were enrolled at 77 Italian hospitals. Women aged ≤50 years (N = 1013) were stratified into age groups (≤35, 36–40, 41–45, and 46–50 years). The relationship between age and patient characteristics, cancer presentation, and treatment was analyzed. Results. Younger women more frequently had tumors with ER/PgR-negative(χ2 = 7.07; P = .008), HER2 amplification (χ2 = 5.76; P = .01), and high (≥10%) Ki67 labelling index (χ2 = 9.53; P = .002). Positive nodal status, large tumors, and elevated Ki67 all associated with the choice for chemotherapy followed by endocrine therapy in hormone receptor-positive patients (P < .0001). At univariate analysis, ER-ve status, chemotherapy and age resulted as the only statistically significant variables (HR = 2.02, P = .004, and >40 versus ≤40, P < .0001, resp.). At multivariate analysis, after adjustment for significant clinical and pathological factors, age remains a significant prognostic variable (HR = 0.93, P = .0021). Conclusion. This cohort study suggests that age per sè is an important prognostic factor. The restricted role of early diagnosis and the aggressive behavior of cancer in this population make necessary the application of targeted medical strategies crucial

PURPOSE: To determine whether baseline Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) measurements of the optic disc are associated with the development of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) in individuals with ocular hypertension in the European Glaucoma Prevention Study (EGPS). DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of a prospective, randomized, multicenter, double-masked, controlled clinical trial. METHODS: There were 489 participants in the HRT Ancillary Study to the EGPS. Each baseline HRT parameter was assessed in univariate and multivariate proportional hazards models to determine its association with the development of OAG. Proportional hazards models were used to identify HRT variables that predicted which participants in the EGPS had developed OAG. Development of OAG was based on visual field and/or optic disc changes. RESULTS: At a median follow-up time of about 5 years, 61 participants developed OAG. In multivariate analyses, adjusting for randomization arm, age, baseline IOP, central corneal thickness, pattern standard deviation, and HRT disc area, the following HRT parameters were associated with the development of OAG: the "outside normal limits" classification of the Frederick Mikelberg (FSM) discriminant function (hazard ratio [HR] 2.51, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.45-4.35), larger mean cup depth (HR 1.64, 95% CI: 1.21-2.23), cup-to-disc area ratio (HR 1.43, 95% CI: 1.14-1.80), linear cup-to-disc ratio (HR 1.43, 95% CI: 1.13-1.80), cup area (HR 1.33, 95% CI: 1.08-1.64), smaller rim area (HR 1.33, 95% CI: 1.07-1.64), larger cup volume (HR 1.30, 95% CI: 1.05-1.61), smaller rim volume (HR 1.25, 95% CI: 1.01-1.54), larger maximum cup depth (HR 1.18, 95% CI: 1.01-1.36), and cup shape measure (HR 1.18, 95% CI: 1.01-1.36). CONCLUSIONS: Several baseline HRT parameters, alone or in combination with baseline clinical and demographic factors, were significantly associated with the development of OAG among the EGPS participants

The project "Informed Consent in Psychological Research with Children: Ethical- Normative Considerations", aims to analyze the specificity of Informed Consent (IC) in research with children and adolescents, examining how it is presented in different national and international legal regulations (Sánchez Vazquez y Borzi, 2014; Borzi, Peralta, Yacuzzi, Cabra, 2014). The aim of this paper is to review bibliography related to the specificity that the IC adopts in the investigation with children in general, and in the psychological investigation with children in particular. The analysis will focus on the characteristics of the information written in the IC according to the singularities of the subjects: contents that must be presented, how they should be transmitted to the child, when it should be requested and when to reapply If necessary, which mode is most convenient and how to ensure that the information has been understood by the participants. In addition, we go deeper into the conceptualizations of the principle of "progressive capacity" from the point of view of law; And how legal tools condition (or not) the decision-making of children to participate as research subjects. We present the results and conclusions established so far.Mesa de trabajos libres: Estudios Interdisciplinarios y Nuevos DesarrollosFacultad de Psicologí
