Sepsis occurs in the presence of an infectious focus; in this case by Escherichia coli (E. coli), that toxins  can cause severe damage to the organism's functionality and morphology, being worsened in patients with diseases that affect the immune system; as is this case in the presence of hematological malignancy. A 42-year-old female patient with a diagnosis of T-NK non-Hodgkin lymphoma presented with a necrotic plaque on the palate, temperature above 38 ° C, respiratory rate exceeding 20 breaths per minute, and heart rate exceeding 90 beats per minute. , on examination of a positive pharyngeal culture for E. coli, negative urine culture, confirming a pharyngeal infectious starting point; Treat with amikacin endovenously for 7 days with good response to antibiotic therapy. An infrequent case is reported for this type of bacteria in the oral area and a review of the subject.

Situación del mapeo microbiológico de uro cultivos en un hospital referencial de Perú 2013-2015: Situation of the microbiological mapping of urine cultures in a referral hospital of Peru 2013-2015

Abstract   Microbiological mapping is a tool and base for good antibiotic management. It guides the empirical treatments in the hospital services as well as in the updating of care protocols. Objective: To determine the situation of the microbiological mapping of urine cultures in referential hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study of urine cultures of the different hospital services from the first semester of 2013 to 2015 was carried out. The situation was defined as the determination of the microbiological profile and the most frequent pathogens isolated. The percentage of resistance by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) for 3 consecutive years was determined. The data were collected and added to a database coded in double back up. Results: The most frequently isolated pathogens were E. coli (56.60%), K. pneumoniae (10.12%) and P. mirabilis (4.22%). The frequency of E. coli ESBL (+) in the years 2013, 2014, 2015 was 37.49%; 47.02% and 50.10% respectively. The sensitivity of E. coli was for ertapenem, meropenem and imipenem (99% -100%), tigecillin (99%) and the percentage of resistance of E. coli to Ciprofloxacin: 67%, 72% and 82% respectively. Conclusion: The most frequently isolated agent was E. coli. The frequency of E. coli ESBL (+) has increased by 33% (2013) to 50% by 2015, with an increase in resistance to ciprofloxacin. However, there is a therapeutic alternative (cefotaxime / clavulanic acid) whose sensitivity is greater than 90%. Key words: Microbiological analysis; Escherichia coli; Antibiotic therapy. Monitoring an Alien Invasion: DNA Barcoding and the Identification of Lionfish and Their Prey on Coral Reefs of the Mexican Caribbean

BACKGROUND: In the Mexican Caribbean, the exotic lionfish Pterois volitans has become a species of great concern because of their predatory habits and rapid expansion onto the Mesoamerican coral reef, the second largest continuous reef system in the world. This is the first report of DNA identification of stomach contents of lionfish using the barcode of life reference database (BOLD). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We confirm with barcoding that only Pterois volitans is apparently present in the Mexican Caribbean. We analyzed the stomach contents of 157 specimens of P. volitans from various locations in the region. Based on DNA matches in the Barcode of Life Database (BOLD) and GenBank, we identified fishes from five orders, 14 families, 22 genera and 34 species in the stomach contents. The families with the most species represented were Gobiidae and Apogonidae. Some prey taxa are commercially important species. Seven species were new records for the Mexican Caribbean: Apogon mosavi, Coryphopterus venezuelae, C. thrix, C. tortugae, Lythrypnus minimus, Starksia langi and S. ocellata. DNA matches, as well as the presence of intact lionfish in the stomach contents, indicate some degree of cannibalism, a behavior confirmed in this species by the first time. We obtained 45 distinct crustacean prey sequences, from which only 20 taxa could be identified from the BOLD and GenBank databases. The matches were primarily to Decapoda but only a single taxon could be identified to the species level, Euphausia americana. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: This technique proved to be an efficient and useful method, especially since prey species could be identified from partially-digested remains. The primary limitation is the lack of comprehensive coverage of potential prey species in the region in the BOLD and GenBank databases, especially among invertebrates
