    The freedom of movement of asylum-seekers within the host State under international and European human rights law

    Asylum-seekers in several European States often have to endure policies that make them feel trapped in a specific part of the country or that constrain their movements to such an extent that their situation resembles detention. How can human rights law respond to these practices? This PhD thesis comprehensively examines the right to free movement within the country under international and European human rights law, as well as under the Spanish and German domestic legal systems. With a specific focus on asylum-seekers, the study analyses this issue from four different angles: (1) the travaux préparatoires of the various instruments that enshrine this freedom; (2) the personal scope of the right according to legal doctrine and case law; (3) the material scope of the right, i.e. the distinction between a restriction on movement and a deprivation of liberty; and (4) the safeguards offered by this right. By comparing the protection afforded to asylum-seekers with that extended to nationals and individuals in general, the thesis contributes to the growing literature on migration exceptionalism. Additionally, the exploration of the legal status of asylum-seekers under various treaties and the detailed assessment of the definition of ‘detention’ hold the potential to inform research in other areas of human rights law, including refugee law

    Ibero-American Research on Local Development. An Analysis of Its Evolution and New Trends

    Local development is a subject that arouses significant interest in the international scientific community in general, and in the Ibero-American one, in particular. The process of globalization has transformed the management of local development, altering the role that is played by local and regional entities, and it is the object of an important follow-up and analysis by academia. This research uses a bibliometric methodology and a fractional counting method, reviewing the 738 articles from the Scopus database in order to understand the state of Ibero-American research on local development, and analyze the scientific literature on the topic. The results show a significant increase in the number of publications in the 21st century, with Spain and Brazil leading the way. In addition, this research provides interesting results regarding the most influential authors on this topic, the most relevant journals, and the most important institutions and funding organizations. There are several areas of knowledge involved since local development is a transversal field, such as Social Science, environment, business, economics, and agriculture. A deep analysis of authors’ keywords identified new trends, linking local development with tourism, education, geotourism, climate change, local sustainable development, social innovation, and creativity, which provides academia with potential new lines of research

    Trabajo de investigaciónEn Colombia la red vial terciaria está constituida en material de afirmado y se encuentra en un estado crítico por falta de mantenimiento rutinario debido a los bajos recursos de inversión para la infraestructura vial terciaria. Este trabajo se realizó con el propósito de evaluar este material orgánico a base de la melaza de caña como estabilizante alternativo para la red terciaria; en la actualidad con el desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías y productos amigables con el medio ambiente como es este producto a base de materiales orgánico que es una formulación liquida natural no tóxica de enzimas que mejora las propiedades de los suelos y que se puede conseguir en una gran cantidad este material para su disposición y fabricación; es por esta razón, que se desarrolló este trabajo con el objetivo de evaluar, estimar y determinar el comportamiento mecánico del aditivo orgánico (terrazyme) como estabilizante de suelos y evaluar su capacidad para resistir las cargas transmitidas por los vehículos. Se analizó el efecto que tiene el producto en el suelo mediante ensayos de laboratorio de Granulometría, límites Atterberg, proctor estándar, expansión en prueba de CBR, materia orgánica por ignición y compresión incofinada, de una muestra tomada de una vía del municipio de Purificación de la vereda Chenche Asoleados, se realizó una comparación entre los resultados obtenidos en laboratorio y finalmente se realizaron conclusiones y recomendaciones respecto a la utilización de este estabilizante para mejorar las características del suelo.Se deja visible por autorización de los autores, mediante correo del 29 de abril de 20201.     Analysis of RAZORMIN® as a Biostimulant and Its Effect on the Phytotoxicity Mitigation Caused by Fungicide Azoxystrobin in Pepper

    Use of biostimulants for stimulating plant growth and mitigating the negative impacts of biotic and abiotic stresses is a promising strategy to achieve higher crop yields. Fungicides such as azoxystrobin are used to control several pests and fungal diseases in plants but at the cost of altering various physiological processes; thereby, leading to reduced crop yields. The efficiency of the compound RAZORMIN® as a biostimulant product while taking into account its role in plant growth stimulation and fungicide azoxystrobin stress mitigation was evaluated in this study. The efficacy of RAZORMIN® was assessed considering its impact on the stimulation of growthrelated physiological processes and stress mitigation mechanism, e.g., reactive oxygen species (ROS) detoxification. Application of RAZORMIN® significantly increased plant growth by improving fresh weight, photosynthetic efficiency, net photosynthesis rate, gas exchange, nitrogen (N) metabolism (with increases in soluble amino acids, foliar N concentration, and N use efficiency), growth hormone concentrations (mainly gibberellins and cytokinins), nutritional status of plants (producing a greater accumulation of phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, zinc, molybdenum, iron, and boron), and sugars concentration.     Subjective quality assessment of multichannel audio accompanied with video in representative broadcasting genres

    Immersive broadcasting applications have received a lot of attention in the last years. In this context, the development of advanced HDTV and 3DTV formats is being successfully adopted by the consumer market, having a strong impact in the way that traditional broadcasting contents are displayed to final users. Together with the above advances in video technology, multichannel spatial audio has also experienced a considerable impulse within the audiovisual industry. However, the need for specific production tools and loudspeaker setups corresponding to multiple competing audio formats seems to be an important factor affecting their adoption by the consumer community. Moreover, it is well-known that the perceived audio quality is highly influenced by the reproduction context, where the existing multimodal interaction between audio and video plays a very important role. This paper presents a formal evaluation of the perceived sound quality provided by several spatial audio formats accompanied with video in the context of television broadcasting.     Comparative Study of Bacterial Isolates in Ovine Mandibular Osteomyelitis and Oral Microbiota of Healthy Sheep

    Microorganisms involved in ovine mandibular osteomyelitis (OMO) have not yet been deeply studied. The aim of the present study is to elucidate the microorganisms involved in OMO, comparing them with the microorganisms found in the healthy oral cavity of sheep. Two hundred and five samples were taken from mandibular osteomyelitis lesions, and they were compared with the microbiological results of samples obtained from twelve periodontally healthy sheep. Sixty-four samples (32.98%) of OMO lesions showed pure growths, while 130 (67.01%) were mixed cultures. Microorganisms of the genus Streptococcus were the most frequently isolated (20.95%), followed by bacteria of the genus Pseudomonas (8.50%), Trueperella pyogenes (7.26%), Staphylococcus (6.63%) and Escherichia coli (6.22%). Ninety-one different isolates were obtained from healthy mouths, and again, microorganisms of the genus Streptococcus were the most frequent (16.48%), followed by bacteria of the genus Staphylococcus (13.18%), Pseudomonas (9.89%) and Moraxella (6.59%). Based on these and previous results, it could be concluded that the normal microbiota of the oral cavity could be involved in the development of OMO lesions when there is an injury of the gingiva that enables the entry of bacteria to the oral mucosa that eventually settle locally in bony tissues, causing mandibular osteomyelitis

    Anaemia in Ruminants Caused by Plant Consumption

    Plant toxicology has affected animals throughout evolution. Plants have adapted themselves to the environment. This adaptation has led to the development of defensive strategies to avoid being consumed. Plants have several chemical compounds, which can cause deleterious effects on people or animals that consume them, causing a wide variety of clinical signs. Plants from various latitudes, both cultivated for human and animal feeding or decorative purpose and even wild growth plants are able to generate anaemia in ruminants. Coumarins or ptaquiloside predispose bleeding and haemorrhages, causing a haemorrhagic disease in affected animals. In this group, some important fodder plants, such sweet clover (Genus Melilotus spp.), or other weeds distributed worldwide, such as bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) of giant fennel (Ferula communis), are included. On the other hand, sulfur-containing chemicals (e.g., n-propyl disulfate and S-propyl cysteine sulfoxides (SMCOs)) may cause severe direct damage to the erythrocyte and their membrane, leading to their destruction and causing haemolytic anaemia in the animal. This review presents the most frequent intoxication by plants causing anaemia in ruminants. Toxic compounds, clinical signs, diagnosis and possible treatments are also presented

    Physiological Study of the Efficacy of Archer® Eclipse in the Protection against Sunburn in Cucumber Plants

    Sunburn is an important issue affecting the yield of many crops, mainly in arid and semi-arid regions. Excessive solar radiation and high temperatures can reduce growth and cause leaf chlorosis, oxidative stress, and photosynthesis impairment. It is thus necessary to develop agricultural techniques to protect plants in a cost-effective and reproducible manner. A potential method is through the spray of protective compounds based on particulate films, such as those based on kaolin. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of spraying the protective product Archer((R)) Eclipse, created by Atlantica Agricola S.A. (Alicante, Spain), on sunburn damage in a sensitive species such as the cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.). To evaluate the effects of sunburn on the plants, parameters related to biomass, leaf temperature, photosynthesis, and oxidative stress were analysed. Plants sprayed with Archer((R)) Eclipse showed fewer sunburn symptoms and obtained 43% more shoot biomass than those that were not treated. In addition, plants sprayed with Archer((R)) Eclipse showed 3 degrees C lower leaf temperatures, higher photosynthesis performance, 88% more water use efficiency, and 21% more chlorophyll concentration. Finally, plants treated with Archer((R)) Eclipse presented 6% less accumulations of carotenoids and 67% less total phenols, but lower oxidative stress indicators.     Impact of stress on health and final weight in fattening lambs

    In order to determine whether the stress level had any influence on the health and final weight of Rasa Aragonesa fattening lambs, stress markers were measured throughout the fattening period in 80 feedlot lambs (group F) and in 40 lambs finished on the farm of birth (group C). The highest values of the stress indicators—neutrophil-to-lymphocyte-ratio (N/L), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), serum cortisol and fecal cortisol metabolites (FCM)—were recorded after the road transportation of group F to the feedlot. No differences between the groups were identified at the end of the adaptation period, but at the end of the fattening, statistically significant higher values for NEFA and serum cortisol were determined in group F. However, statistically significant differences between the groups were not found in the percentage of lambs with clinical signs of illness and ovine respiratory complex (ORC) lesions or in the final weight of the lambs. Independent of the location at which the lambs were fattened, those with FCM values at the beginning of the study (at the time of weaning) in the highest quartile developed a higher percentage of clinical signs of illness (45.5% vs. 32.1%, p > 0.05) and ORC lesions (45.5% vs. 10.7%, p < 0.01), and their average final weight was lower (24.36 kg vs. 27.40 kg, p = 0.001) than those with values in the lowest quartile. Stress experienced by lambs prior to finishing seems to be relevant for their further development, and FCM concentration at the time of weaning could be used as an indicator of health and productive performance of the lambs during the fattening period, regardless of finishing location

    Hydrogenation of 4-nitrochlorobenzene catalysed by cobalt nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped activated carbon

    The hydrogenation of nitroarenes to produce the corresponding amines using dihydrogen as reducing agent has an important industrial role, since it allows to obtain important added-value products. This reaction needs the help of a catalyst to proceed. Many catalysts have been already tested and studied. Most of them are based on noble metals supported on metal oxides. These catalysts perform well, but they are expensive and thus, alternative systems are needed. In this context, cobalt-based catalysts have emerged as adequate alternatives, despite cobalt nanoparticles per se are not very active for this reaction. A way to improve the catalytic activity of cobalt nanoparticles is by supporting them on a support with functional groups that are able to change their intrinsic properties and to enhance their catalytic properties. In this sense, N-containing carbons are promising candidates to be used as support, since nitrogen functionalities may modify the catalytic properties of cobalt. In this work, cobalt nanoparticles supported on N-doped activated carbons have been prepared and studied as catalysts for the hydrogenation of 1-chloro-4-nitrobencene to the corresponding chloro-aniline. It is demonstrated that the catalytic activity is enhanced by the presence of nitrogen species in the support. When the temperature of the catalyst activation treatment (reduction under flowing hydrogen) is increased, the catalytic activity increases drastically in the presence of nitrogen functionalities on the support. The catalysts have been characterised by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopi (XPS) and N2 adsorption at 77 K. It has been found that the enhanced catalytic activity was due to two different factors, namely the interaction of the cobalt particles with the nitrogen functional groups (forming Co4N), and the development of mesopores in the support during the activation process that increases the accessibility of reactants to the active sites.Authors acknowledge financial support by MINECO (Spain) through the projects MAT2017-86992-R and MAT2016-80285-P and the European Union for the project “eForFuel”, grant agreement 763911.
