Textile practices to subvert public spaces. From women's suffrage to anti-femicide movements

The objectives of this work are to trace the development of women’s textile practices and their transformational potential as tools to express protest in public spaces, and to evaluate these practices as aesthetic-political interventions. We find a common thread that surprisingly links the activist experiences of British suffragettes to various actions of contemporary anti-femicide movements. Tackling such issues implies dealing with basic aspects related to the foundations of the institution of art and the development of hierarchies in gender, techniques and formats, in addition to historical-artistic narratives with claims to universality. Feminist studies have unravelled the constructed nature of categories such as canon or creative genius, and the very definition and limits of what constitutes the artistic. They have also revealed the barriers erected between public and private life, which has a direct relevance for the historiographical consideration accorded to textile practices.El presente trabajo pretende rastrear las huellas de las prácticas textiles realizadas por las mujeres y su potencial transformador como herramientas reivindicativas en los espacios públicos, y valorarlas como intervenciones estético-políticas. Encontramos un hilo conductor que vincula de forma sorprendente las experiencias activistas de las sufragistas británicas y diversas acciones de movimientos contra el feminicidio contemporáneo. Abordar estas cuestiones presupone tratar aspectos de partida que atañen a los cimientos de la institución arte y la jerarquización de los géneros, las técnicas y los formatos; también a los relatos histórico-artísticos con pretensiones universales. Los estudios feministas han desentrañado el carácter construido de categorías tales como canon o genio creador, y de la propia definición y delimitación de lo artístico. Y han desenmascarado las barreras construidas entre lo público y lo privado, que atañe directamente a la estimación historiográfica de las labores textiles

La perspectiva de género en la obra de Rosario Camacho. Una cuestión de conciencia.

Recuerdo una conversación con Rosario cuyos pormenores cobran ahora una significación especial. Estábamos charlando sobre la puesta en valor y remodelación expositiva de la colección del siglo XIX en las nuevas salas del Museo del Prado. Rosario me hizo notar el acierto de la colocación de la soberbia escultura de la reina Isabel de Braganza, de José Álvarez Cubero, justo al inicio del recorrido, dando la bienvenida. A propósito del comentario museístico, Charo expresó su interés por esta reina, alma mater de la fundación del museo. Y lo expresó con vehemencia, con la convicción de quien cree que se está haciendo justicia, una justicia de rigurosidad histórica e historiográfica: el protagonismo de una mujer –reina, como no podía ser de otro modo– con la sensibilidad y la dedicación a la gestión y promoción artísticas que formaban parte, en realidad, de los menesteres de Estado

Cultura franciscana contemporánea. La conmemoración del VII centenario de la muerte de San Francisco de Asís (1226-1926)

The commemoration of the 7th centenary of the death of St Francisco de Asis (1226-1926) went beyond the purely religious and ecclesiastical limits reaching a high enlightened standing. This event constituted a well-taken opportunity to study and make progress in the knowledge of the Franciscan history and mysticism, and the so-called “Fransciscan culture” The reason of this renewed interest was the contemporary validity of his charisma, his power to symbolize the modern man’s worries and his fascinating response capacity to numerous concerns. The present work is focused on the analysis of this erudite and artistic mark, the variety of its materialization and the value of its distribution channels.La conmemoración del VII centenario de la muerte de San Francisco de Asís (1226-1926) traspasó los ámbitos estrictamente religiosos y eclesiásticos para alcanzar una dilatada dimensión ilustrada. El evento fue una oportunidad bien aprovechada para profundizar y avanzar en el conocimiento de la historia, la mística y la llamada “cultura” franciscanas. En la base de este renovado interés estaba la validez contemporánea del carisma del santo, su poder de simbolización de las preocupaciones del hombre moderno y su fascinante capacidad de respuesta a múltiples inquietudes. El presente trabajo se centra en el análisis de esta impronta erudita y artística, la variedad de su materialización y el valor de sus canales de difusión

Mujeres y árboles. Asimilaciones naturales y autorrepresentaciones feministas / Women and Trees. Natural Assimilations and Feminist Self-Images

RESUMEN: Lejos de ser el referente fálico, el sostén duro o mullido, o el ámbito umbroso refugio de las diosas, de las musas y las ninfas, símbolo de la humedad peligrosa de la feminidad, el árbol se presenta como un alter ego fuerte y poderoso, como atalaya, ayuda para la superación, o motivo creativo desde posiciones feministas diversas. También como elemento central de las luchas ecofeministas. Este trabajo rastrea algunas de estas propuestas para descubrir la heterogeneidad de los itinerarios. Y pretende asimismo abordar las pautas de la pertinencia de este referente natural en los discursos feministas sobre el cuerpo, el sujeto y la identidad. Estos aspectos denotan la necesidad de una reapropiación de los contenidos, las formas y el sentido que las prácticas y el pensamiento artístico de la contemporaneidad han otorgado a las vinculaciones entre las mujeres y la naturaleza. ABSTRACT: Far from being a phallic allusion, the solid or soft support, the shady refuge of goddesses, nymphs and muses, or a symbol of the dangerous moisture of femininity, diverse feminist perspectives present the tree as a strong and powerful alter ego, as a vantage point, an aid to development or as a creative motif. It is also a central element of eco-feminist struggles. This paper explores some of these suggestions in order to discover the heterogeneity of the paths and likewise attempts to trace the patterns governing the pertinence of this natural allusion to feminist discourse on the body, subject and identity. These aspects denote the need to re-appropriate the content, form and meaning that contemporary artistic thought and practice have bestowed on the links between women and nature

The figure of Cleopatra has a special place in the female iconographic universe. Her historical image has been frequently tinged with legend, in whose creation artists have taken anactive part through their gazes. The sovereign of Egypt provides the most delicious ingredients to inspire and nurture the male interests, desires and dreams. From this point of view the women’s practise of power cannot be understood without the conscious use of the female stereotyped elements. Cleopatra with her rare and exotic beauty, her insatiable sexual appetite and her extreme passion turns into seduction queen who draws, destroyes and finally leads to death. The Nile country offers also the perfect location for those who enjoy exotic things. This essay deals with the aesthetics and expressive possibilities of the legend through a selection of the most significant plastic and film works.La figura de Cleopatra ocupa un lugar preferente dentro del universo iconográfico femenino. En la creación del mito, cuya imagen histórica aparece teñida de una buena dosis de leyenda, han participado activamente los artistas a través de la proyección de sus miradas. La soberana de Egipto ofrece los ingredientes más sabrosos para inspirar y alimentar las inquietudes, deseos y sueños masculinos. Desde esta perspectiva, el ejercicio del poder por parte de una mujer no podía entenderse sin la utilización consciente de los componentes estereotipados de la feminidad. Cleopatra, como portadora de una rara y exótica belleza, de un desenfrenado apetito sexual y de pasiones extremas, se convierte en la reina de la seducción que arrastra, arrasa y, finalmente, lleva a la muerte. El país del Nilo brinda, además, el escenario perfecto para los gustadores de lo exótico. El presente trabajo aborda las posibilidades estéticas y expresivas del mito a través de una selección de la producción plástica y cinematográfica más significativa.

Hyperspectral Imaging to Evaluate the Effect of IrrigationWater Salinity in Lettuce

Salinity is one of the most important stress factors in crop production, particularly in arid regions. This research focuses on the effect of salinity on the growth of lettuce plants; three solutions with different levels of salinity were considered and compared (S1 = 50, S2 = 100 and S3 = 150 mM NaCl) with a control solution (Ct = 0 mM NaCl). The osmotic potential and water content of the leaves were measured, and hyperspectral images of the surfaces of 40 leaves (10 leaves per treatment) were taken after two weeks of growth. The mean spectra of the leaves (n = 32,000) were pre-processed by means of a Savitzky–Golay algorithm and standard normal variate normalization. Principal component analysis was then performed on a calibration set of 28 mean spectra, yielding an initial model for salinity effect detection. A second model was subsequently proposed based on an index computing an approximation to the second derivative at the red edge region. Both models were applied to all the hyperspectral images to obtain the corresponding artificial images, distinguishing between the 28 that were used to extract the calibration mean spectra and the rest that constituted an external validation. Those virtual images were studied using analysis of variance in order to compare their ability for detecting salinity effects on the leaves. Both models showed significant differences between each salinity level, and the hyperspectral images allowed observations of the distribution of the salinity effects on the leaf surfaces, which were more intense in the areas distant from the veins. However, the index-based model is simpler and easier to apply because it is based solely on the reflectance at three different wavelengths, thus allowing for the implementation of less expensive multispectral devices.The funding of this work was supported by the MICINN through projects Multihort (AGL2008-05666-C02-01) and QualityLeaf (AGL2013-48529-R). Technical note: A mobile collaborative workspace to assist forensic experts in disaster victim identification scenarios

Integrated approaches to disaster victim identification (DVI) management have led to a need for technologies to improve interaction among parties involved in post-mortem (PM) and ante-mortem (AM) data collection through better communication and coordination. Mobile Forensic Workspace© (MFW) is a collaborative mobile system that not only facilitates the systematic collection of high-quality data, but also allows DVI professionals to coordinate activities and exchange data through secure real-time communication at major disaster scenarios in accordance with security, privacy and legal protocols. MFW is adaptable to any communication format (text, voice calls, photographs, etc.) and is dynamically self-reconfigurable when connectivity problems arise. It also allows data integration and backup through secure communication channels between local and remote servers. The feasibility of the system has been demonstrated through implementation of MFW on the iOS platform for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad terminals. A further strength of MFW is that it provides out-of-the-box support for INTERPOL DVI forms. The application of information and communication technologies for DVI was shown to be useful in improving DVI management by enhancing the quality of data collection and enabling non-Internet dependent real-time data sharing and communication
