    Analytical marginalisation over photometric redshift uncertainties in cosmic shear analyses

    As the statistical power of imaging surveys grows, it is crucial to account for all systematic uncertainties. This is normally done by constructing a model of these uncertainties and then marginalizing over the additional model parameters. The resulting high dimensionality of the total parameter spaces makes inferring the cosmological parameters significantly more costly using traditional Monte-Carlo sampling methods. A particularly relevant example is the redshift distribution, p(z)p(z), of the source samples, which may require tens of parameters to describe fully. However, relatively tight priors can be usually placed on these parameters through calibration of the associated systematics. In this paper we show, quantitatively, that a linearisation of the theoretical prediction with respect to these calibratable systematic parameters allows us to analytically marginalise over these extra parameters, leading to a factor 30\sim30 reduction in the time needed for parameter inference, while accurately recovering the same posterior distributions for the cosmological parameters that would be obtained through a full numerical marginalisation over 160 p(z)p(z) parameters.     Wide Bandgap Perovskite Photovoltaic Cells for Stray Light Recycling in a System Emitting Broadband Polarized Light

    Perovskite based photovoltaic (PV) cells are unique in combining low open-circuit voltage losses with a broad bandgap tunability. This makes them an ideal PV cell to recycle photons back into electrical power in a variety of illumination systems or light emitting devices. Here, advantage of these features is taken and wide bandgap (WBG) perovskite PV cells are incorporated in devices suitable for display illumination and demonstrate a high yield in stray light recycling back into electricity with up to a 37.5% power conversion efficiency. The specific device considered is a modified half-cylinder photonic plate designed to emit diffused broadband polarized light using a nonabsorbing reflective polarizer based on a random dielectric layer distribution. It is experimentally demonstrated that light recycling using appropriately tuned WBG perovskite PV cells becomes very efficient when implemented in systems where the light is emitted from narrowband sources, even if the emission spans a broad wavelength range

    Transporte do amônio em colunas com agregados de um Latossolo vermelho distrófico.

    Para descrever o transporte do íon amônio em diferentes classes de agregados de um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico realizou-se um experimento de laboratório cujos tratamentos corresponderam a um fatorial 3 x 5, sendo: três fontes de NH4 + [(NH4)2SO4, NH4Cl e NH4NO3] e cinco classes de agregados (2,0-1,0; 1,0-0,5; 0,5-0,25; 0,25-0,105; e <0,105 mm). A unidade experimental foi constituída de uma coluna de vidro saturada, sob vácuo, com uma solução de CaCl2 0,005 mol L-1. Aplicou-se, a seguir, a solução saturante até percolação constante, seguida de um pulso de sete volumes de poros da respectiva fonte a 0,01 mol L-1 de NH4 + (Co) para cada classe de agregados. Foram coletadas frações correspondentes a 0,3 volume de poros do efluente (p) determinando-se as concentrações de NH4 + (C). Calculou-se a relação C/Co para cada fração p, traçando-se curvas experimentais de eluição. Os maiores valores dos fatores de retardamento ocorreram nos agregados de menor tamanho, indicando maior retenção do amônio; na maioria dos tratamentos ocorreu superposição das curvas obtidas por meio dos modelos teóricos, o que indicou que o transporte do amônio no solo se deu, predominantemente, por dispersão.     LimberJack.jl: auto-differentiable methods for angular power spectra analyses

    We present LimberJack.jl, a fully auto-differentiable code for cosmological analyses of 2 point auto- and cross-correlation measurements from galaxy clustering, CMB lensing and weak lensing data written in Julia. Using Julia's auto-differentiation ecosystem, LimberJack.jl can obtain gradients for its outputs up to an order of magnitude faster than traditional finite difference methods. This makes LimberJack.jl greatly synergistic with gradient-based sampling methods, such as Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, capable of efficiently exploring parameter spaces with hundreds of dimensions. We first prove LimberJack.jl's reliability by reanalysing the DES Y1 3×\times2-point data. We then showcase its capabilities by using a O(100) parameters Gaussian Process to reconstruct the cosmic growth from a combination of DES Y1 galaxy clustering and weak lensing data, eBOSS QSO's, CMB lensing and redshift-space distortions. Our Gaussian process reconstruction of the growth factor is statistically consistent with the Λ\LambdaCDM Planck 2018 prediction at all redshifts. Moreover, we show that the addition of RSD data is extremely beneficial to this type of analysis, reducing the uncertainty in the reconstructed growth factor by 20%20\% on average across redshift.     Epigenetic and transcriptomic reprogramming in monocytes of severe COVID-19 patients reflects alterations in myeloid differentiation and the influence of inflammatory cytokines

Severe and critical COVID-19 patients are characterized by marked changes in the myeloid compartment, especially monocytes. However, little is known about the epigenetic alterations that occur in these cells during hyperinflammatory responses in severe COVID-19 patients. Methods In this study, we obtained the DNA methylome and transcriptome of peripheral blood monocytes from severe COVID-19 patients. DNA samples extracted from CD14 + CD15- monocytes of 48 severe COVID-19 patients and 11 healthy controls were hybridized on MethylationEPIC BeadChip arrays. In parallel, single-cell transcriptomics of 10 severe COVID-19 patients were generated. CellPhoneDB was used to infer changes in the crosstalk between monocytes and other immune cell types. Results We observed DNA methylation changes in CpG sites associated with interferon-related genes and genes associated with antigen presentation, concordant with gene expression changes. These changes significantly overlapped with those occurring in bacterial sepsis, although specific DNA methylation alterations in genes specific to viral infection were also identified. We also found these alterations to comprise some of the DNA methylation changes occurring during myeloid differentiation and under the influence of inflammatory cytokines. A progression of DNA methylation alterations in relation to the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score was found to be related to interferon-related genes and T-helper 1 cell cytokine production. CellPhoneDB analysis of the single-cell transcriptomes of other immune cell types suggested the existence of altered crosstalk between monocytes and other cell types like NK cells and regulatory T cells. Conclusion Our findings show the occurrence of an epigenetic and transcriptional reprogramming of peripheral blood monocytes, which could be associated with the release of aberrant immature monocytes, increased systemic levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and changes in immune cell crosstalk in these patients.This study has been funded by R+D+i project of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (grant number PID2020-117212RB-I00/ MICIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033).     Animal dietary exposure : overview of current approaches used at EFSA

    At EFSA, animal dietary exposure estimates are undertaken by several Panels/Units to assess the risk of feed contaminants, pesticide residues, genetically modified feed and feed additives. Guidance documents describing methodologies for animal dietary exposure assessment are available both at EFSA and international levels. Although appropriate within pertinent regulatory frameworks, the methodologies used to assess animal dietary exposure vary across risk assessment areas. There are different approaches ranging from quick worst-case estimations to more refined methods assessing actual exposure, resulting from the use of a heterogeneous selection of animal populations and default values to estimate feed intake. Furthermore, current feed classification systems in place at international and national levels contain a large and heterogeneous number of feed materials, which may benefit from further harmonisation efforts. This technical report presents an overview of the current approaches in place at EFSA to assess the exposure to chemicals in feed. The possibility for a greater harmonisation of feed classification and terminology is also addressed by comparing the structure of the EU catalogue of feed materials and the Harmonised OECD tables of feedstuffs derived from field crops with the EFSA FoodEx2 system

    Antiproliferative activity of flavonoids from croton Sphaerogynus baill. (euphorbiaceae)

    Croton sphaerogynus is a shrub from the Atlantic Rain Forest in southeastern Brazil. A lyophilized crude EtOH extract from leaves of C. sphaerogynus, obtained by maceration at room temperature (seven days), was suspended in methanol and partitioned with hexane. The purified MeOH phase was fractionated over Sephadex LH-20 yielding five fractions (F1-F5) containing flavonoids, as characterized by HPLC-DAD and HPLC-MS analyses. The antiproliferative activity of the crude EtOH extract, MeOH and hexane phases, and fractions F1-F5 was evaluated on in vitro cell lines NCI-H460 (nonsmall cell lung), MCF-7 (breast cancer), and U251 (glioma). The MeOH phase showed activity (mean log GI(50) 0.54) higher than the hexane phase and EtOH extract (mean log GI(50) 1.13 and 1.19, resp.). F1 exhibited activity against NCI-H460 (nonsmall cell lung) (GI(50) 1.2 mu g/mL), which could be accounted for the presence of flavonoids and/or diterpenes. F4 showed moderate activity (mean log GI(50) 1.05), while F5 showed weak activity (mean log GI(50) 1.36).
