    Towards improving the prospects for coordinated gravitational-wave and electromagnetic observations

    We discuss two approaches to searches for gravitational-wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) counterparts of binary neutron star mergers. The first approach relies on triggering archival searches of GW detector data based on detections of EM transients. We introduce a quantitative approach to evaluate the improvement to GW detector reach due to the extra information gained from the EM transient and the increased confidence in the presence of a signal from a binary merger. We also advocate utilizing other transients in addition to short gamma ray bursts. The second approach involves following up GW candidates with targeted EM observations. We argue for the use of slower but optimal parameter-estimation techniques to localize the source on the sky, and for a more sophisticated use of astrophysical prior information, including galaxy catalogs, to find preferred followup locations.Comment: Full text for proceedings of New Horizons in Time-domain Astronomy, IAU Symposium 285 [published proceedings will be abbreviated

    Anode Fabrication for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: Electroless and Electrodeposition of Nickel and Silver into Doped Ceria Scaffolds

    © 2016 The Authors.A novel fabrication method using electroless and electrodeposited Ni/Ag/GDC for SOFC anodes is presented. First a porous Ce0.9Gd0.1O2-x (GDC) scaffold was deposited on a YSZ electrolyte by screen printing and sintering. The scaffold was then metallized with silver using Tollens reaction, followed by electrodeposition of nickel from a Watts bath. The electrodes (Ni/Ag/GDC) were tested in both symmetrical and fuel cell configurations. The microstructures of the Ni/Ag/GDC anodes were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Nano-particles of Ni formed in the porous GDC scaffold provided triple phase boundaries (TPB). The electronic conductivity of the Ni/Ag/GDC (3.5/24.7/71.8 vol%) electrode was good even at relatively low Ni volume fractions. The electrochemical performance was examined in different concentrations of humidified hydrogen (3% H2O) and over a range of temperatures (600-750 °C). The total area specific resistance (ASR) of the anode at 750 °C in humidified 97 vol% H2 was 1.12 Ω cm2, with low-frequency polarization (R-l) as the largest contributor.     An obscured AGN population hidden in the VIPERS galaxies: identification through spectral energy distribution decomposition

    The detection of X-ray emission constitutes a reliable and efficient tool for the selection of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), although it may be biased against the most heavily absorbed AGNs. Simple mid-IR broad-band selection criteria identify a large number of luminous and absorbed AGNs, yet again host contamination could lead to non-uniform and incomplete samples. Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) decomposition is able to decouple the emission from the AGN versus that from star-forming regions, revealing weaker AGN components. We aim to identify the obscured AGN population in the VIPERS survey in the CFHTLS W1 field through SED modelling. We construct SEDs for 6,860 sources and identify 160 AGNs at a high confidence level using a Bayesian approach. Using optical spectroscopy, we confirm the nature of ~85% of the AGNs. Our AGN sample is highly complete (~92%) compared to mid-IR colour selected AGNs, including a significant number of galaxy-dominated systems with lower luminosities. In addition to the lack of X-ray emission (80%), the SED fitting results suggest that the majority of the sources are obscured. We use a number of diagnostic criteria in the optical, infrared and X-ray regime to verify these results. Interestingly, only 35% of the most luminous mid-IR selected AGNs have X-ray counterparts suggesting strong absorption. Our work emphasizes the importance of using SED decomposition techniques to select a population of type II AGNs, which may remain undetected by either X-ray or IR colour surveys.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS in May 4, 2020. 18 figures, 3 tables

    El propósito de este estudio fue evaluar la influencia motivacional del estilo de música (clásica y tecno) frente a su no utilización sobre el rendimiento y el esfuerzo percibido. Se administró a 24 triatleta que hicieron tres sesiones de 20 minutos, en bicicleta estática. Se establecieron dos grupos experimentales y un grupo control. El grupo control realizó todas las pruebas sin música, el grupo experimental 1 realizó una primera sesión sin música, una segunda con música clásica y una tercera con tecno y, el grupo experimental 2, realizó una primera sesión sin música, una segunda con tecno y una tercera con clásica. Los resultados indicaron que la música seleccionada no influye significativamente en el rendimiento. El éxito atribuido a una melodía y la asociación de la música con una película es una de las cualidades más motivacionales e influye sobre el esfuerzo percibido, siendo menor con música clásica.The purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which different types of music (classical or techno), or the absence of music, may affect motivation, performance and perceived effort. 24 triathletes were divided into three groups, one of which served as a control group. Each group underwent three exercise sessions of twenty minutes on the static bicycle. No music was played in any of the control group’s sessions. In the first session for Group 1 no music was played. In the first session for Group 2 no music was played. In the second session, classical music was played for the participants of Group 1 and techno music was played for the participants of Group 2. In the third and final session, techno music was played for the participants of Group 1 and classical music was played for the participants of Group 2. Results indicate that the choice of music has little effect on performance. It appears that a song’s popularity or its association with a famous film is the most motivational factor and that this affects the participants’ levels of perceived effort, however this effect is less noticeable with classical musi

    Impact of disorder on dynamics and ordering in the honeycomb-lattice iridate Na2IrO3

    Kitaev's honeycomb spin-liquid model and its proposed realization in materials such as α-RuCl3, Li2IrO3, and Na2IrO3 continue to present open questions about how the dynamics of a spin liquid are modified in the presence of non-Kitaev interactions as well as the presence of inhomogeneities. Here we use Na23 nuclear magnetic resonance to probe both static and dynamical magnetic properties in single-crystal Na2IrO3. We find that the NMR shift follows the bulk susceptibility above 30 K but deviates from it below; moreover below TN the spectra show a broad distribution of internal magnetic fields. Both of these results provide evidence for inequivalent magnetic sites at low temperature, suggesting inhomogeneities are important for the magnetism. The spin-lattice relaxation rate is isotropic and diverges at TN, suggesting that the Kitaev cubic axes may control the critical quantum spin fluctuations. In the ordered state, we observe gapless excitations, which may arise from site substitution, emergent defects from milder disorder, or possibly be associated with nearby quantum paramagnetic states distinct from the Kitaev spin liquid

    Recently Groote and Pivovarov have given notice of a possible fault in the use of sum rules involving two-point correlation functions to extract information on heavy quark parameters, due to the presence of massless contributions that invalidate the construction of moments of the spectral densities. Here we show how to circumvent this problem through a new definition of the moments, providing an infrared safe and consistent procedure.Comment: 1+9 pages, 3 figures.     Towards a Semantic Gas Source Localization under Uncertainty.Communications in Computer and Information Science book series (CCIS, volume 855), doi:10.1007/978-3-319-91479-4_42This work addresses the problem of efficiently and coherently locating a gas source in a domestic environment with a mobile robot, meaning efficiently the coverage of the shortest distance as possible and coherently the consideration of different gas sources explaining the gas presence. The main contribution is the exploitation, for the first time, of semantic relationships between the gases detected and the objects present in the environment to face this challenging issue. Our proposal also takes into account both the uncertainty inherent in the gas classification and object recognition processes. These uncertainties are combined through a probabilistic Bayesian framework to provide a priority-ordered list of (previously observed) objects to check. Moreover the proximity of the different candidates to the current robot location is also considered by a cost function, which output is used for planning the robot inspection path. We have conducted an initial demonstration of the suitability of our gas source localization approach by simulating this task within domestic environments for a variable number of objects, and comparing it with an greedy approach.Universidad de Málaga.
