Ultrastructural Alterations in Lepocinclis acus (Euglenophyta) Induced by Medium with High Organic Matter Content

    Get PDF
Ultrastructural changes induced by exposure to excess of organic matter were studied in Lepocinclis acus (ex Euglena acus). The cells isolated from the Matanza River, Buenos Aires, Argentina, were grown in soil water medium (SWM). When transferred to medium enriched with Bacteriological Peptone OXOID®, marked body deformation and a significant shortening and widening of the cells was observed. These changes were unexpected in a species with quite rigid cells, a condition previously shown in studies of the pellicle fine structure. Transmission electron microscopy observations suggest that cellular deformation might be facilitated by an increase in strip number, whereas in the original strips normal ultrastructure was maintained. An increase in number and volume of paramylon grains and vacuoles, as well as the presence of membrane whorls in vacuoles was observed. The fine structure of organisms grown in medium with and without organic matter enrichment was compared, and the systematic and ecological importance of morphological changes triggered by cell deformation was discussed.Fil: Conforti, Visitacion Teresa D.. Improving the Power Electronics Laboratory teaching/learning process: an interactive web tool

    Get PDF
European Higher Education Area; Power Electronics Laboratory; educational methods Resumen: The forthcoming European Higher Education Area implies an important change in the teaching/learning process: it is necessary to get students more involved as well as to promote their independence and active participation. To achieve this objective, the new teaching methodologies aimed at more effective and appropriate learning for professional practice involve the use of audiovisual, computer and multimedia tools on the part of lecturers. Therefore, a web tool, based on a content management system, has been developed for the teaching in Power Electronics Laboratory. Moreover, the use of these multimedia tools makes possible to promote the students independence. Finally, the use of this web tool results in a very significant increase in the motivation students.

After the defeat of Germany and Italy in World War II and the condemnation of the Franco Regime by the UN, the Spanish political model lost favour among democratic countries. From that moment on tourism in Spain became the only doorway to the world starting to attract attention: the tourist sector could at the same time get our economy back on its feet and give Spain back its image of a powerful country by gaining international political recognition whose absence threatened the survival of the Franco Regime. The State Tourist Office was then given the difficult task of adjusting the balance of international payments, and changing the reservations and even the hatred of certain countries, especially of the U.S.A, into friendship. During this stage the official visits of distinguished personalities in politics such as Eva Perón or King Abdullah of Jordan, as well as groups of journalists of several nationalities (North American, Mexican, Cuban, etc.) and people in charge of international tourist companies, made Spain fashionable and encouraged people to get to know the reality of a country everybody was talkingabout and about which contradictory accounts circulated

Evaluating pointing errors on ergodic capacity of DF relay-assisted FSO communication systems

Ergodic capacity of decode-and-forward (DF) relay-assisted free-space optical (FSO) communication systems when line of sight is available is analyzed over gamma-gamma fading channels with pointing errors. Novel closed-form approximate ergodic capacity expression is obtained in terms of the H-Fox function for a 3-way FSO communication system when the α-μ distribution to efficiently approximate the probability density function (PDF) of the sum of gamma-gamma with pointing errors variates is considered. Moreover, we present a novel asymptotic expression at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the ergodic capacity of DF relay-assisted FSO systems. The main contribution in this work lies in an in-depth analysis about the impact of pointing errors on the ergodic capacity for cooperative FSO systems. In order to maintain the same performance in terms of capacity, it is corroborated that the presence of pointing errors requires an increase in SNR, which is related to the fraction of the collected power at the receive aperture, i.e. A 0 . Simulation results are further demonstrated to confirm the accuracy and usefulness of the derived results.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech.
