    A novel portable device to measure the temperature of both the inner and the outer tubes of a parabolic receiver in the field

    The performance of parabolic trough (PT) receiver tubes (RT) has a direct impact on Solar Thermal Energy (STE) plant production. As a result, one major need of operation and maintenance (O&M) in STE plants is to monitor the state of the receiver tube as a key element in the solar field. However the lack of specific devices so far has limited the proper evaluation of operating receiver tubés thermal performance. As a consequence non-accurate approximations have been accepted until now using infrared thermal images of the glass outer tube. In order to fulfill this need, Abengoa has developed a unique portable device for evaluating the thermal performance and vacuum state of parabolic trough receiver tubes placed in the field. The novel device described in this paper, simultaneously provides the temperature of both the inner steel tube and the outer glass tube enabling a check on manufacturers specifications. The on-field evaluation of any receiver tube at any operating temperature has become possible thanks to this new measuring device. The features and usability of this new measurement system as a workable portable device in operating solar fields provide a very useful tool for all companies in the sector contributing to technology progress. The originality of the device, patent pending P201431969, is not limited to the CSP sector, also having scientific significance in the general measuring instruments field. This paper presents the work carried out to develop and validate the device, also detailing its functioning properties and including the excellent results obtained in the laboratory to determine its accuracy and standard deviation. This information was validated with data collected by O&M teams using this instrument in a commercial CSP plant. The relevance of the device has been evidenced by evaluating a wide sample of RT and the results are discussed in this paper. Finally, all the on field collected data is used to demonstrate the high impact that using this unique portable device will have on a parabolic trough solar power plant

    JPCam: A 1.2Gpixel camera for the J-PAS survey

    JPCam is a 14-CCD mosaic camera, using the new e2v 9k-by-9k 10microm-pixel 16-channel detectors, to be deployed on a dedicated 2.55m wide-field telescope at the OAJ (Observatorio Astrofisico de Javalambre) in Aragon, Spain. The camera is designed to perform a Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) survey of the northern sky. The J-PAS survey strategy will use 54 relatively narrow-band (~13.8nm) filters equi-spaced between 370 and 920nm plus 3 broad-band filters to achieve unprecedented photometric red-shift accuracies for faint galaxies over ~8000 square degrees of sky. The cryostat, detector mosaic and read electronics is being supplied by e2v under contract to J-PAS while the mechanical structure, housing the shutter and filter assembly, is being designed and constructed by a Brazilian consortium led by INPE (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais). Four sets of 14 filters are placed in the ambient environment, just above the dewar window but directly in line with the detectors, leading to a mosaic having ~10mm gaps between each CCD. The massive 500mm aperture shutter is expected to be supplied by the Argelander-Institut fur Astronomie, Bonn. We will present an overview of JPCam, from the filter configuration through to the CCD mosaic camera.     Los programas educativos de formación de pos-grado deben ser flexibles y adaptarse a los cambios científicos y a las necesidades del medio para poder asegurar el nivel de competitividad y el grado de aceptación de los egresados en el campo laboral y social El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar la capacitación y actualización después de egresados. Esta Investigación consistió en un estudio de tipo descriptivo, la población la constituyeron os egresados de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata entre los años 1998 – 1999. La información se obtuvo mediante una encuesta estructurada aplicada por correo, internet y a través de entrevistas personales o telefónicas. Tomando un total de 648 egresados, correspondiendo 318 al año 1998 y 330 al año 1999. Se obtuvo información de 199 (62.58%) del año 1998 y 214 (64.85%) del año 1999. Del total de encuestas recibidas pertenecientes al año 1998, 110 (55.28%) realizó estudios de postgrado, 89 (44.72%) no los realizó. Los recibidos en el año 1999, 170 (79.44%) realizó estudios de post-grado y 44 (20.56%) no los realizó. Los resultados brindaron elementos para determinar conclusiones sobre la relevancia de la formación de post-grado de los egresados de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata, determinándose que un alto porcentaje desea realizar capacitación post-título y su interés por la educación continua.     On the Optical Transients from Double White-dwarf Mergers

    Double white dwarf (DWD) mergers are relevant astrophysical sources expected to produce massive, highly magnetized white dwarfs (WDs), supernovae (SNe) Ia, and neutron stars (NSs). Although they are expected to be numerous sources in the sky, their detection has evaded the most advanced transient surveys. This article characterizes the optical transient expected from DWD mergers in which the central remnant is a stable (sub-Chandrasekhar) WD. We show that the expansion and cooling of the merger's dynamical ejecta lead to an optical emission peaking at 1–10 days postmerger, with luminosities of 1040–1041 erg s−1. We present simulations of the light curves, spectra, and the color evolution of the transient. We show that these properties, together with the estimated rate of mergers, are consistent with the absence of detection, e.g., by the Zwicky Transient Facility. More importantly, we show that the Legacy Survey of Space and Time of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory will likely detect a few/several hundred per year, opening a new window to the physics of WDs, NSs, and SNe Ia

    A fully automatic gridding method for cDNA microarray images

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Processing cDNA microarray images is a crucial step in gene expression analysis, since any errors in early stages affect subsequent steps, leading to possibly erroneous biological conclusions. When processing the underlying images, accurately separating the sub-grids and spots is extremely important for subsequent steps that include segmentation, quantification, normalization and clustering.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We propose a parameterless and fully automatic approach that first detects the sub-grids given the entire microarray image, and then detects the locations of the spots in each sub-grid. The approach, first, detects and corrects rotations in the images by applying an affine transformation, followed by a polynomial-time optimal multi-level thresholding algorithm used to find the positions of the sub-grids in the image and the positions of the spots in each sub-grid. Additionally, a new validity index is proposed in order to find the correct number of sub-grids in the image, and the correct number of spots in each sub-grid. Moreover, a refinement procedure is used to correct possible misalignments and increase the accuracy of the method.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Extensive experiments on real-life microarray images and a comparison to other methods show that the proposed method performs these tasks fully automatically and with a very high degree of accuracy. Moreover, unlike previous methods, the proposed approach can be used in various type of microarray images with different resolutions and spot sizes and does not need any parameter to be adjusted.</p

    Aromatic polymers obtained by precipitation polycondensation: 4*. Synthesis of poly(ether ketone ketone)s

    High molecular weight aromatic poly(ether ketone ketone)s were synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts polyacylation condensation of iso- and terephthaloyl chlorides with diphenyl ether, 1,4- and 1,3-bis(4- phenoxybenzoyl)benzenes. Depending on the monomers used for polycondensation, polyketones of regular structure with different iso-/tereisomer repeating unit ratio (100/0, 50/50, 0/100) in the main chain were obtained. Polymers of each repeating isomer unit were prepared in two different ways. All the polymer syntheses were performed as precipitation polycondensations and the resulting polymers were obtained in particle form. The influence of reaction conditions and preparation route on the polymer properties were examined. The monomer concentration and monomer stoichiometric ratio were found to affect the polymer viscosity. The size and shape of the polyketone particles obtained were also found to be governed by reaction conditions and preparation route.Peer reviewe
