THE SELF ACTUALIZATION OF THE MAIN CHARACTER ’’IN THE PELICAN BRIEF ’’ FILM DIRECTED BY ALAN J. PAKULA

Characteristics of sef actualization are the terms to identify whether a person is categorized into self-actualized person or not. A sef actualized person is  a person who is living creatively and fully using his or her potentials to realize his desire for self-fulfillment, namely, to the tendency for him to become actualized in his own potentials. This research is discussing about the characteristics of self-actualization of the main character, Derby Shaw in fulfilling her  self-actualization needs in “Pelican Brief” film directed by J. Pakula in 1993. The method of collecting data in this research is qualitative descriptive research where the data are in the form of sentences or utterences from the script of the film and then they are categorized based on the Abraham Maslow theory of personality especially the motives and the characteristic of self-actialization namely 1) An Accurate perception of reality, 2)Independence, Creativity, Spontaneity, 3) Acceptance of themselves and others, 4) A Problem- centered outlook, rather than a centered outlook, 5) Enjoyment of Life, 6)  Good Sense of Humor. ANALYSIS OF LORD CAPULET CHARACTERS IN SHAKESPEARE’S “ROMEO AND JULIET” DRAMA BASED ON SIGMUND FREUD PERSONALITY THEORY

Setiap manusia mempunyai kepribadian masing-masing. Kepribadian inilah yang membuat setiap manusia merupakan mahluk Tuhan yang unik atau tidak ada yang benar-benar sama. Untuk menganalisa kepribadian seseorang banyak sekali pendekatan psikologi yang bisa diterapkan. Salah satu dari tehnik analisa kepribadian tersebut adalah teori kepribadian yang ditemukan oleh bapak psikologi dunia yaitu Sigmund Freud. Beliau menemukan unsur-unsur dari kepribadian yaitu Id, ego dan super ego. Id adalah unsur kepribadian yang didapat semenjak lahir. Unsur kepribadian ini adalah unsur kepribadian dibawah alam sadar termasuk naluriah dan isting. Menurut Freud, id adalah sumber dari semua energy phisic dan id bekerja berdasarkan prinsip kesenangan atau kenyamanan. Jika kebutuhan id ini tidak dipenuhi maka membuat badan kita tidak merasa tidak nyaman, tegang atau cemas. Unsur kepribadian selanjutnya adalah ego. COHERENCE AND COHESION OF STUDENTS’ ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS IN SPEAKING TEST AT LITERATURE FACULTY IN UNIVERSITY OF PUTERA BATAM

This research is conducted to give description about coherence and cohesion of the students answers to speaking final exam in Putera Batam University. Data of this research comes from any written and electronic sources about coherence and cohesion. They are in the form of audio file. The data are transcribed and categorized into two grand categories namely coherence and cohesion. From both grand  categories, they are broken down until sub-sub categories which do not contain more than 10 data, then they are analyzed in order to draw some  substantive theories. From substantive theories arising, then they are grouped into two grand substantive theories. They are 1) Correct grammatical aspect in every component of a sentence can make cohesion of the sentence. 2) Combination of cohesive sentences in an answer can determine the cohesive answers. A CASE STUDY ON SPEAKING ENGLISH AT FOURTH SEMESTER IN PUTERA BATAM IN YEAR 2013-2014

Speaking is one of the most important skills in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Even other people can judge someone whether he masters English or not  only by this language skill though there are many other language kills which can decide he master it or not.  Of course to judge someone we need to test him or her. There are five kinds of speaking, namely Initiative, intensive, responsive, interactive and extensive. This research used interview speaking test for final examination at the fourth semester in faculty of literature in Putera Batam University. The data collected from the population of 3 classes with the total students of 126 students. The sample is taken from 1 class with the total students of 26. The data from interview are written down in the form of script. Yet not all phases of interview will be analyzed, only probe questions which contain five questions are analyzed from grammar, vocabulary, fluency and Pronunciation

Flouting Maxims Found in Encanto Movie

There are several conditions to create an effective communication, one of them is the utterance of the speaker must be understood by the listener. Utterance can be called as maxim. The speaker can disobey a maxim in purposed as long as the context provides enough indicators for the participant to notice it. This is called flouting maxim. This research discussed about the flouting maxims that found in “Encanto” Movie as data source. The related utterances by characters in the movie were the data of analysis in this research. This research used non-participatory observation as the method of collecting data and categorization based on theory by Grice in Yule (1996) as the method of analyzing data. from analysis of this research can be found there were 15 utterances of flouting maxims found in this Movie. There were 5 utterances of the flouting maxim of quantity, 5 utterances of the flouting maxim of quality, 3 utterances of the flouting maxim of relation, and 2 utterances of the flouting maxim of manner. Finally, the most common flouting maxims found in this movie were maxims of quantity and quality, and the least flouting maxim was maxim of manner

GOOD HOOK AS ATTENTION GRABBER IN EFL STUDENT’S ESSAYS: A REVIEW FROM READER’S PERSPECTIVE

This article provides a review from the reader's point of view of essays’ hook written by EFL students in Putera Batam University. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the effectiveness of the opening sentence which is able to attract readers to read the entire essay or perhaps ignore it altogether. By acting as a reader, the researcher then provides a review of the opening sentence in the introductory paragraph. This research uses descriptive research method. The data is taken from the student's writing task. The data are then grouped based on how to make a good hook and analyzed based on how to write a good hook. The researchers act as the reader and uses their point of view to judge an interesting hook. The results obtained from this study are 23 data hooks using questions, 17 data hooks with interesting observations, 11 data hooks had unique scenarios, 4 data hooks using famous quotes and 3 data with statistics. Furthermore, the remaining 6 data were identified not to write hooks using these five methods. From this review, it can be concluded that writing hooks is not as easy as it seems, because to attract readers' interest the writer should be able to see the hook from the reader's point of view

TRANSLATION ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATING MACHINE

Fenomena penerjemahan mempunya dampak yang sangat besar dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Hal ini bisa dilihat dari hamper semua aspek aktivitas sangat dipengaruhi oleh penerjemahan. Contoh yang paling sederharna adalah dari penggunaan gawai Ketika seseorang memainkan game atau menggunakannya sebagai alat untuk berkomunikasi dengan orang lain. Dalam hal ini baik disengaja maupun tidak dia telah menggunakan jasa penerjemah yang telah menerjemahkan buku panduan dari penggunaan gawai tersebut dari Bahasa sumber dari produsen gawai ke Bahasa sasaran dari penggunanya. Tanpa buku panduan yang telah diterjemahkan ke Bahasa sasaran pelanggannya (TT), pengguna gawai tidak akan dapat menggunakannya dengan benar. Pengaruh penerjemagan secara besar-besaran juga dapat dilihat ketika seseorang pemeluk agama beribadah dimana sumberberasal dari nya  kitab suci yang sudah penerjemahan Dalam menerjemahkan dokumen, ada beberapa prosedur yang harus delakukan (Venuti, 2021). Seperti 1) peminjaman, 2) Calque, 3) Penerjemahan perkata 4) Transposisi, 5) Modulasi 6) Equivalensi dan 7) Adaptasi. Artikel ini menganalisa prosedur penerjemahan dari pidato Presiden Joko Widodo dalam Rapat Umum Perserikatan Bangsa Bangsa yang ke 76. Hasil dari Analisa tersebut dapat ditemukan sebagai berikut proses borrowing terdiri dari 34 kata, Calque terdiri dari 7 ungkapan, Literal Translation mempunyai 4 kalimat, Transposition terdiri dari 11 kata, Modulation mempunyai 7 kata dan  Equivalence mempunyai 2 katas. Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam artikel ini adalah non participatory observation dimana peneliti melakukan observasi tidak langsung yaitu dengan cara menonton video tersebut dan beberapa dokumen dan catatan dengan cara membandingkan pidato secara oral dan dibandingkan dengan teks berjalan  yang ada di bagian bawah dari pidato tersebut. Sementara itu metode Analisa data yang digunakan adalah categorisasi berdasarkan teori prosedur penerjemahan dari Vinay and Darlbelnet. Kata kunci: Prosedur penerjemahan, teks sasaran, rapat umum, teks berjalan

The Use of Flouting Maxim in “Rise of the Guardians” Movie

This descriptive qualitative research analyzed flouting maxims found in Rise of the Guardians movie. The researchers used utterances that contained flouting maxims as the data and the theory of Grice (1975) was used. Maxims refer to linguistic principles that must be understood in communication between speaker and listener in order for the communication process to proceed well. Flouting maxims refer to the phenomena that happen when communicator do not obey the cooperative principal communication. The phenomena of flouting maxims come up in daily utterance and the existence even appears in movie as media that all utterances are scripted. The aim of this research is to analyze flouting maxims in utterances of Rise of the Guardians movie. In process of collecting data, the researchers used the non-participatory observational method. In this research, pragmatic identity method and the competence in equalizing technique used to analyze the data. Based on the results, the researchers found 10 utterances of flouting maxims from the beginning until end of the movie. Flouting maxim of relation had four utterances, three utterances were found in flouting maxim of manner, one utterance was in flouting maxim of quality, and flouting maxim of quantity appeared two utterances

The objective of this study is to find and identify the kinds of semantic relation used in the short stories written by Kate Chopin and compare the semantic relation found in each short story. The research method for this research is qualitative descriptive. The data for this research will be the three of the short stories written by Kate Chopin: The Story of an Hour, Regret, and A Respectable Women. The method for this research will include collecting the words or phrases that have semantic relation and those words will be later categorized in their kind of semantic relation to compare the semantic relation used in Kate Chopin’s short stories
