    Development of new Mn-based oxygen carriers using MgO and SiO2 as supports for Chemical Looping with Oxygen Uncoupling (CLOU)

    Chemical Looping with Oxygen Uncoupling (CLOU) is a technological adaptation of CLC, most applicable for the combustion of solid fuels. In the CLOU process, an oxygen carrier in the fuel reactor, avoiding the direct contact of the fuel with the air, releases the oxygen needed for the fuel combustion. The oxygen carrier is regenerated with air in the interconnected air reactor. The present work explores the behavior of the system Mn/Mg/Si as oxygen carriers for chemical-looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU). Six different mixed oxides of the system Mn/Mg/Si were investigated for the CLC/CLOU process. Materials were prepared by spray drying with different metal ratios used in the investigation. The properties of interest for the viability of these materials are the lattice oxygen supply for CLC and the gaseous oxygen release for CLOU, properties that were explored in a TGA. Further, the fluidization behavior and the mechanical resistance were investigated in a batch fluidized bed reactor. In the TGA it was observed that the most reactive oxygen carriers for the CLOU process were materials without Si in the structure, more specifically M24Mg76 and M48Mg51 which had a molar ratio of Mn/Mg of 0.17 and 0.51 respectively. It was also observed that for the oxygen carriers with Si in the composition, the regeneration was very poor. Oxygen carriers M24Mg76 and M48Mg51 were selected for batch fluidized bed reactor testing showing good behavior with respect to the CLOU reactivity, and mechanical stability. One of the materials, the M24Mg76 showed activation during the experiments in the batch fluidized bed reactor experiments, increasing the oxygen transport capacity by 20 % during the experiment. However, 10 vol% of O2 was needed to regenerate both oxygen carriers at 850 \ub0C. No agglomeration tendencies were seen, and the attrition rate was low, obtaining high-extrapolated lifetime values. The fact that highly reactive oxygen carriers can be made with cheap and highly available metals oxides, i.e. Mn and Mg, makes this system very promising and a possible alternative to benchmark Cu-based CLOU materials

    Investigating the Interaction between Ilmenite and Zinc for Chemical Looping

    The iron and titanium oxide ilmenite is a benchmark oxygen carrier for chemical looping combustion (CLC) and oxygen carrier-aided combustion (OCAC). Both of them are combustion technologies for biomass and waste fuels with lower emissions and low costs for carbon capture. Here, the interaction between the ash component zinc and oxygen carrier ilmenite is studied in a two-staged vertical tube reactor. Three types of ilmenites─Norwegian rock ilmenite, synthesized ilmenite, and ilmenite extracted after 200 h of OCAC in a full-scale fluidized bed unit─were exposed to gas-phase Zn and ZnCl2. Following the exposure, samples were analyzed concerning morphology, chemical distribution, composition, and crystalline phases. The observations were complemented with thermodynamic equilibrium calculations. It is observed that the iron-rich layer formed on the external surface of rock ilmenite after activation promotes the reaction with both gaseous zinc compounds, with zinc ferrite formed in the external Fe-rich layer. In contrast, ilmenite with no segregation of Fe and Ti showed to interact less with zinc species. Metallic Zn penetrated the particles, while the interaction depth was shallow with ZnCl2\ua0for all investigated ilmenite oxygen carriers. The gaseous conditions, particle ash layer composition, and iron availability are shown to play an important role in the interaction between zinc compounds and ilmenite particles. Based on these results, interaction mechanisms for Zn and ZnCl2\ua0are proposed. This interaction could have environmental implications for the toxicity of ash streams from waste combustion in addition to possibilities for Zn recycling

    Fermi-edge singularities in linear and non-linear ultrafast spectroscopy

    We discuss Fermi-edge singularity effects on the linear and nonlinear transient response of an electron gas in a doped semiconductor. We use a bosonization scheme to describe the low energy excitations, which allows to compute the time and temperature dependence of the response functions. Coherent control of the energy absorption at resonance is analyzed in the linear regime. It is shown that a phase-shift appears in the coherent control oscillations, which is not present in the excitonic case. The nonlinear response is calculated analytically and used to predict that four wave-mixing experiments would present a Fermi-edge singularity when the exciting energy is varied. A new dephasing mechanism is predicted in doped samples that depends linearly on temperature and is produced by the low-energy bosonic excitations in the conduction band.Comment: long version; 9 pages, 4 figure

    Mesenteric panniculitis with pedal edema in a 33-year-old Pakistani man: a case report and literature review

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare pathology of unknown etiology characterized by inflammation and fibrosis in the mesentery. Its protean clinical and radiological manifestations make it a diagnostic challenge. There is no established treatment available for its management. The clinical outcome is inconsistent, with the prognosis ranging from complete resolution without any treatment to rapid progression culminating in death.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 33-year-old Pakistani man presented with vague abdominal pain, an ill-defined epigastric mass and bilateral pedal edema. A detailed review of his history and laboratory investigations did not point to any diagnosis. The patient underwent an exploratory laparotomy based on the finding of mesenteric soft-tissue density on computed tomography. The laparotomy did not prove to be of any diagnostic or therapeutic value. Upon review of the pre-operative computed tomographic scan at our institution, a diagnosis of mesenteric panniculitis was made. An acceptable resolution of abdominal pain and pedal edema was attained after a 4-week trial of immunosuppressive therapy. This is the first reported case of mesenteric panniculitis with pedal edema as part of its presentation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>An increased awareness may lead to the development of a less invasive diagnostic approach and optimal treatment for this rarely recognized condition.</p

    First Results from the Herschel and ALMA Spectroscopic Surveys of the SMC: The Relationship between [C ii ]-bright Gas and CO-bright Gas at Low Metallicity

    The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) provides the only laboratory to study the structure of molecular gas at high resolution and low metallicity. We present results from the Herschel Spectroscopic Survey of the SMC (HS3), which mapped the key far-IR cooling lines [C ii], [O i], [N ii], and [O iii] in five star-forming regions, and new ALMA 7 m array maps of 12CO{}^{12}\mathrm{CO} and 13CO{}^{13}\mathrm{CO} (2−1)(2-1) with coverage overlapping four of the five HS3 regions. We detect [C ii] and [O i] throughout all of the regions mapped. The data allow us to compare the structure of the molecular clouds and surrounding photodissociation regions using 13CO{}^{13}\mathrm{CO}, 12CO{}^{12}\mathrm{CO}, [C ii], and [O i] emission at ≲10′′\lesssim 10^{\prime\prime} (<3\lt 3 pc) scales. We estimate AV{A}_{V} using far-IR thermal continuum emission from dust and find that the CO/[C ii] ratios reach the Milky Way value at high AV{A}_{V} in the centers of the clouds and fall to \sim 1/5\mbox{--}1/10\times the Milky Way value in the outskirts, indicating the presence of translucent molecular gas not traced by bright 12CO{}^{12}\mathrm{CO} emission. We estimate the amount of molecular gas traced by bright [C ii] emission at low AV{A}_{V} and bright 12CO{}^{12}\mathrm{CO} emission at high AV{A}_{V}. We find that most of the molecular gas is at low AV{A}_{V} and traced by bright [C ii] emission, but that faint 12CO{}^{12}\mathrm{CO} emission appears to extend to where we estimate that the H2{{\rm{H}}}_{2}-to-H i transition occurs. By converting our H2{{\rm{H}}}_{2} gas estimates to a CO-to-H2{{\rm{H}}}_{2} conversion factor (X CO), we show that X CO is primarily a function of AV{A}_{V}, consistent with simulations and models of low-metallicity molecular clouds

    Capsule Endoscopy: A Valuable Tool in the Follow-Up of People With Celiac Disease on a Gluten-Free Diet

    OBJECTIVES: Traditional celiac disease guidelines recommend follow-up endoscopy and duodenal biopsies at 6–12 months after commencing a gluten-free diet (GFD). However, histology may remain abnormal even 1–2 years later. We evaluated the role of capsule endoscopy in patients with celiac disease after treatment with a GFD. METHODS: Twelve adult patients with newly diagnosed celiac disease were prospectively enrolled. All patients had baseline symptom assessment, celiac serology (tissue transglutaminase antibody, tTG), and capsule endoscopy. Twelve months after commencing a GFD, patients underwent repeat symptom assessment, celiac serology, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and capsule endoscopy. RESULTS: At baseline, capsule endoscopy detected endoscopic markers of villous atrophy in the duodenum and extending to a variable distance along the small intestine. On the basis of small bowel transit time, the mean±s.e.m. percentage of small intestine with villous atrophy was 18.2±3.7%. After 12 months on a GFD, repeat capsule endoscopy demonstrated mucosal healing from a distal to proximal direction, and the percentage of small intestine with villous atrophy was significantly reduced to 3.4±1.2% (P¼0.0014) and this correlated with improvement in the symptom score (correlation 0.69, P¼0.01). There was a significant improvement in symptom score (5.2±1.0 vs. 1.7±0.4, P¼0.0012) and reduction in immunoglobulin A–tTG levels (81.5±10.6 vs. 17.5±8.2, P¼0.0005). However, 42% of subjects demonstrated persistent villous abnormality as assessed by duodenal histology. CONCLUSIONS: After 12 months on a GFD, patients with celiac disease demonstrate an improvement in symptoms, celiac serology, and the extent of disease as measured by capsule endoscopy. Mucosal healing occurs in a distal to proximal direction. The extent of mucosal healing correlates with improvement in symptoms.     What questions do patients undergoing lower extremity joint replacement surgery have?

    BACKGROUND: The value of the Internet to deliver preoperative education would increase if there was variability in questions patients want answered. This study's goal was to have patients consulting an orthopedic surgeon about undergoing either a total hip arthroplasty (THA) or a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) rate the importance of different questions concerning their care. METHODS: We assembled questions patients might have about joint replacement surgery by analyzing the literature and querying a pilot group of patients and surgeons. Twenty-nine patients considering undergoing THA and 19 patients considering TKR completed a written survey asking them to rate 30 different questions, with a 5 point Likert scale from 1 (least important) – 5 (most important). RESULTS: For patients considering THA or TKR, the 4 highest rated questions were: Will the surgery affect my abilities to care for myself?, Am I going to need physical therapy?, How mobile will I be after my surgery?, When will I be able to walk normally again? The mean percentage disagreement was 42% for questions answered by TKR patients and 47% for the THA group. Some patients gave a high rating to questions lowly rated by the rest of the group. CONCLUSIONS: Although there was enough agreement to define a core set of questions that should be addressed with most patients considering THA or TKA, some of the remaining questions were also highly important to some patients. The Web may offer a flexible medium for accommodating this large variety of information needs
