An attempt to classify plural forms of governance

Plural governance structures arise when a firm conduct the same transaction simultaneously under more than one governance structure. The article presents a classification of cases of plural governance structures, based on the rationale behind the choice of a combination of simple governance structures. The method was the comparison of cases reported in the literature. Four main sets of cases occurring plural forms were found, in which the governance structures are complementary; determined by resources available to firms; explained the diversity of contract makers; and related to the history of the firm. Various theoretical lenses are useful to analyze the phenomenon of plural, particularly Transaction Costs Economics, Resource Based View, and Industrial Organization, setting then the issue of the adequacy of theories to the concrete cases.Estruturas de governança plurais surgem quando uma mesma transação é conduzida por uma firma simultaneamente sob mais de uma estrutura de governança simples. O artigo apresenta uma classificação de casos de estruturas de governança plurais, baseada na racionalidade subjacente à escolha da combinação de estruturas de governança. O método foi a revisão e comparação de casos relatados na literatura. Foram identificados quatro grandes conjuntos de casos em que ocorrem formas plurais: em que as estruturas de governança são complementares; as determinadas pela disponibilidade de recursos para a firma; as explicadas pela diversidade dos tomadores de contrato; e as relacionadas à história da firma. O fenômeno das formas plurais pode ser analisado sob diversas lentes teóricas, especialmente a Economia dos Custos de transação, a Visão Baseada em Recursos, e a Organização Industrial, colocando-se então o problema da adequação das teorias aos casos concretos

A theoretical approach for green supply chain

This paper aims to discuss theoretically the Green Supply Chain (GSC) concept, its implementation and prospective benefits by reviewing the current and past literature on the subject. The main issues found in this research are about: basic steps to create the GSC, methods to manage it and the result of its implementation. GSC is usually started by an end producer, which has an environmental management system, and desires to pass good environmental practices to its suppliers. The implementation of GSC can be also done by market requirements. The results include cost reduction, resource conservation, public image improvement, and market competitiveness among others benefits that are describe in this work. Problems for greening the supply chain are the reduction of flexibility of suppliers and the culture of organizations. This paper can help companies meet global market requirements and public administrators to understand the environmental performance through industrial cluster

A transmigração da causalidade no Fédon de Platão

Abstract: In the dialogue that shows the last philosophical speech of Socrates, Plato examines the theme of death: Socrates explores the tradition of Mysteries to find images that may justify his unusual attitude towards death. The very definition of death presupposes the existence and survival of the soul. Without defining the soul, Plato reconfigures the axioms based on the heterogeneity of the Mysteries. This reconfiguration of ancient beliefs results in the causal transmigration that moulds the hypothesis of Forms. The composition of the final myth is the results on a long dialectical pursue which re-establishes the discursive reason of images qualified as a “noble risk” (‘καλὸς’, Phd. 114d6). The aim of this analysis is thus to identify the itinerary by which the ‘noble risk’ of palingenesis constructs the axiom and the causal principle of Forms as the explanation of truth and the nature of all beings. Sem definir a alma, Platão reconfigura os axiomas tomados da heterogeneidade dos Mistérios.  Essa reconfiguração de antigas crenças resulta na transmigração causal que modela a hipótese das Formas. A composição do mito final surge após um longo percurso dialético que restabelece a razoabilidade discursiva de imagens qualificadas como um “nobre risco”. A finalidade desta análise é identificar o itinerário pelo qual o ‘nobre risco’ da palingenesia constrói o axioma e princípio causal das Formas como explanação sobre a verdade e natureza de todos os seres. His philosophic interlocutors, who represent a Pythagorean tradition, present the opportunity of a sophisticated argumentation that promotes an extreme inflection on the religious tradition and philosophical notions, which investigates the causal principles of all things. Duas maneiras de contar a história do pensamento econômico

O artigo que se segue compara duas perspectivas metodológicas distintas: de um lado, a metodologia de Thomas Kuhn, centrada na idéia de paradigma e revolução científica, já razoavelmente difundida entre os economistas; de outro, a metodologia associada à idéia de cânon, tal como apresentada em Brown (1993 e 1994). Para tornar menos árida a apresentação, as potencialidades das duas concepções distintas são ilustradas com um período delimitado da história do pensamento econômico, que corresponde à consolidação do sistema teórico desenvolvido na obra clássica de Adam Smith.

Para além da agricultura: o efeito "treadmill" no sistema agroindustrial de alimentos no Brasil

The food real prices in Brazil have declined 20% on average since the monetary stabilization plan of 1994 despite two exchange devaluations in 1999 and 2001. The classical explanation based on productivity gains from agriculture does not apply to that period, when food retail prices grew less than agricultural prices. The objective of the paper is to explore the causes of these relative price variations among agriculture, industry, and distribution, analyzing the behavior of the price series in the last 6 years and the microeconomic adjustments based on a set of in-depth interviews conducted with leading retail firms, industry, traders, and cooperatives during 2001/2002

A rational experimental approach to identify correctly the working voltage window of aqueous-based supercapacitors

It is common to find in the literature different values for the working voltage window (WVW) range for aqueous-based supercapacitors. In many cases, even with the best intentions of the widening the operating voltage window, the measured current using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique includes a significant contribution from the irreversible Faradaic reactions involved in the water-splitting process, masked by fast scan rates. Sometimes even using low scan rates is hard to determine precisely the correct WVW of the aqueous-based electrochemical capacitor. In this sense, we discuss here the best practices to determine the WVW for capacitive current in an absence of water splitting using complementary techniques such as CV, chronoamperometry (CA), and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). To accomplish this end, we prepare and present a model system composed of multiwalled carbon nanotubes buckypaper electrodes housed in the symmetric coin cell and soaked with an aqueous-based electrolyte. The system electrochemical characteristics are carefully evaluated during the progressive enlargement of the cell voltage window. The presence of residual Faradaic current is verified in the transients from the CA study, as well as the impedance changes revealed by EIS as a function of the applied voltage, is discussed. We verify that an apparent voltage window of 2.0 V determined using the CV technique is drastically decreased to 1.2 V after a close inspection of the CA findings used to discriminate the presence of a parasitic Faradaic process. Norm scores of cancelation and bisection tests for unilateral spatial neglect: data from a Brazilian population

OBJECTIVE: Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) results in a consistent and exaggerated spatial asymmetry in the processing of information about the body or space due to an acquired brain injury. There are several USN tests for clinical diagnosis, but none of them are validated in Brazil. The aim was to obtain normative values from a healthy sample in Brazil and to evaluate the effects of demographic variables on USN tests. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study performed with 150 neurologically healthy individuals. USN was evaluated using the line cancelation (LC), star cancelation (SC), and line bisection (LB) tests in the A3 (29.7 x 42.0 cm) sheet format. RESULTS: In LC, 143 participants had 0 omissions, and the occurrence of failure was significantly associated with aging (OR=1.1[1.02-1.2]; p=0.012). In SC, 145 participants had fewer than 1 omission, and the occurrence of failure was significantly associated with aging (OR=1.07[1.03-1.11]; po0.001). In LB, deviations were the lowest for those with the highest level of education (r=0.20; p=0.015), and the deviation was 9.5 mm. CONCLUSION: The cutoff points presented in this study may be indicative of USN, but due to performance differences based on age, we suggest using different norm scores for different age groups. These norm scores can be used in the clinic immediately for USN diagnosis
