The thickening of the thin disk in the third Galactic quadrant

In the third Galactic quadrant (180 < l < 270) of the Milky Way, the Galactic thin disk exhibits a significant warp ---shown both by gas and young stars--- bending down a few kpc below the formal Galactic plane (b=0). This warp shows its maximum at 240, in the direction of the Canis Major constellation. In a series of papers we have traced the detailed structure of this region using open star clusters, putting particular emphasis on the spiral structure of the outer disk. We noticed a conspicuous accumulation of young star clusters within 2-3 kpc from the Sun and close to b=0, that we interpreted as the continuation of the Local (Orion) arm towards the outer disk. While most clusters (and young stars in their background) follow closely the warp of the disk, our decade-old survey of the spiral structure of this region led us to identify three clusters, Haffner~18(1 and 2) and Haffner~19, which remain very close to b=0 and lie at distances (4.5, 8.0, and 6.4 kpc) where most of the material is already significantly warped. Here we report on a search for clusters that share the same properties as Haffner~18 and 19, and investigate the possible reasons for such an unexpected occurrence. We present UBVRI photometry of 5~young clusters, namely NGC~2345, NGC~2374, Trumpler~9, Haffner~20, and Haffner~21, which also lie close to the formal Galactic plane. With the exception of Haffner~20, in the background of these clusters we detected young stars that appear close to b=0, and are located at distances up to 8 kpc from the Sun, thus deviating significantly from the warp. These populations define a structure that distributes over almost the entire third Galactic quadrant. We discuss this structure in the context of a possible thin disk flaring, in full similarity with the Galactic thick disk.Comment: 53 pages, 12 eps figures, in press in the Astronomical Journa

Results on Transversal and Axial Motions of a System of Two Beams Coupled to a Joint through Two Legs

In recent years there has been renewed interest in inflatable-rigidizable space structures because of the efficiency they offer in packaging during boost-to-orbit. However, much research is still needed to better understand dynamic response characteristics, including inherent damping, of truss structures fabricated with these advanced material systems. We present results of an ongoing research related to a model consisting of an assembly of two beams with Kelvin-Voight damping, coupled to a simple joint through two legs. The beams are clamped at one end but at the other end they satisfy a boundary condition given in terms of an ODE coupling boundary terms of both beams, which reflects geometric compatibility conditions. The system is then written as a second order differential equation in an appropriate Hilbert space  in which well-posedness, exponential stability as well as other regularity properties of the solutions can be obtained. Two different finite dimensional approximation schemes for the solutions of the system are presented. Numerical results are presented and comparisons are made.Fil: Burns, J. A.. Orbits for eighteen visual binaries and two double-line spectroscopic binaries observed with HRCAM on the CTIO SOAR 4m telescope, using a new Bayesian orbit code based on Markov Chain Monte Carlo

We present orbital elements and mass sums for eighteen visual binary stars of spectral types B to K (five of which are new orbits) with periods ranging from 20 to more than 500 yr. For two double-line spectroscopic binaries with no previous orbits, the individual component masses, using combined astrometric and radial velocity data, have a formal uncertainty of ~0.1 MSun. Adopting published photometry, and trigonometric parallaxes, plus our own measurements, we place these objects on an H-R diagram, and discuss their evolutionary status. These objects are part of a survey to characterize the binary population of stars in the Southern Hemisphere, using the SOAR 4m telescope+HRCAM at CTIO. Orbital elements are computed using a newly developed Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm that delivers maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters, as well as posterior probability density functions that allow us to evaluate the uncertainty of our derived parameters in a robust way. For spectroscopic binaries, using our approach, it is possible to derive a self-consistent parallax for the system from the combined astrometric plus radial velocity data ("orbital parallax"), which compares well with the trigonometric parallaxes. We also present a mathematical formalism that allows a dimensionality reduction of the feature space from seven to three search parameters (or from ten to seven dimensions - including parallax - in the case of spectroscopic binaries with astrometric data), which makes it possible to explore a smaller number of parameters in each case, improving the computational efficiency of our Markov Chain Monte Carlo code.Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables. Full text link

A systematic procedure to enhance reproducibility of SWASV cycles in the determination of toxic metals in real samples

This work presents for the first time a systematic study on the optimization of the electrochemical cleaning time of a mercury film when it is used as a working electrode material in the analysis of toxic metals, such as Pb2+, used as model metal, in real samples by SWASV. The optimization study for the film’s cleaning time aimed at attaining a Pb2+ minimum value in the film after the re-oxidation step of the pre-concentrated metal, given the impossibility of complete removal of traces of the electroactive species from the film. This value was kept constant in each concentration range studied ensuring thus that all assays were performed in initial identical conditions. An assay performed on a synthetic sample was taken as reference. In it, given the absence of matrix effects, and after the electrochemical cleaning step, a direct proportionality was observed between the residual amounts of Pb2+ in the film (which for the cleaning time used was never completely removed) and Pb2+ concentration in the solution. This fact determined a high correlation between Pb2+ peak current and Pb2+ concentration which was not observed when real samples (tree leaves) were analyzed. This behavior may result from the presence of the interfering surfactants always present in real samples of complex matrix. Cleaning time optimization was performed for the following Pb2+ concentration ranges in the real samples of complex matrix: 0.006-0.020, 0.020-0.080, 0.060-0.200 and 0.100-0.600 ppb. As expected, in order to obtain identical levels of film’s cleaning efficiency, the need for longer cleaning times has been observed for higher concentrations. The optimized cleaning times for the concentration ranges under study were 120, 150, 180 e 300 s, respectively

Insulin and GLP-1 infusions demonstrate the onset of adipose-specific insulin resistance in a large fasting mammal: potential glucogenic role for GLP-1.

Prolonged food deprivation increases lipid oxidation and utilization, which may contribute to the onset of the insulin resistance associated with fasting. Because insulin resistance promotes the preservation of glucose and oxidation of fat, it has been suggested to be an adaptive response to food deprivation. However, fasting mammals exhibit hypoinsulinemia, suggesting that the insulin resistance-like conditions they experience may actually result from reduced pancreatic sensitivity to glucose/capacity to secrete insulin. To determine whether fasting results in insulin resistance or in pancreatic dysfunction, we infused early- and late-fasted seals (naturally adapted to prolonged fasting) with insulin (0.065 U/kg), and a separate group of late-fasted seals with low (10 pM/kg) or high (100 pM/kg) dosages of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) immediately following a glucose bolus (0.5g/kg), and measured the systemic and cellular responses. Because GLP-1 facilitates glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, these infusions provide a method to assess pancreatic insulin-secreting capacity. Insulin infusions increased the phosphorylation of insulin receptor and Akt in adipose and muscle of early and late fasted seals; however the timing of the signaling response was blunted in adipose of late fasted seals. Despite the dose-dependent increases in insulin and increased glucose clearance (high dose), both GLP-1 dosages produced increases in plasma cortisol and glucagon, which may have contributed to the glucogenic role of GLP-1. Results suggest that fasting induces adipose-specific insulin resistance in elephant seal pups, while maintaining skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity, and therefore suggests that the onset of insulin resistance in fasting mammals is an evolved response to cope with prolonged food deprivation
