    Chinese translation and validation of the Oxford Knee Scale for patients with knee osteoarthritis

    Background: Oxford Knee Scale (OKS) is a commonly used instrument to assess the symptoms and functional status in people with knee osteoarthritis. However, a Chinese version of this scale is not yet available. Objective: The objective of this study was to translate the OKS into Chinese and validate the Chinese version of OKS. Methods: The Chinese OKS was translated from the original English version following the recommendations of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research. One hundred Chinese reading patients with knee osteoarthritis were recruited from local hospitals and physiotherapy clinics. Psychometric properties were evaluated in terms of test-retest reliability and internal consistency. Convergent validity was examined by Spearman rank correlation coefficient tests by comparing its score with the validated Chinese version of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index and Health Outcome Survey Short Form-36. Results: Chinese OKS demonstrated excellent reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.88). Cronbach a of individual questions was > 0.7. Strong correlation was found between the Chinese OKS and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (r > 0.553, p < 0.001). Fairly strong negative correlation was also found between Chinese OKS and Health Outcome Survey Short Form-36 (p = -0.273 to -0.666, p < 0.05). Conclusion: The Chinese translated version of OKS is a reliable and valid instrument for clinical evaluation in Chinese reading patients with knee osteoarthritis

    Competitive inhibition of survivin using a cell-permeable recombinant protein induces cancer-specific apoptosis in colon cancer model

    Endogenous survivin expression has been related with cancer survival, drug resistance, and metastasis. Therapies targeting survivin have been shown to significantly inhibit tumor growth and recurrence. We found out that a cell-permeable dominant negative survivin (SurR9-C84A, referred to as SR9) competitively inhibited endogenous survivin and blocked the cell cycle at the G1/S phase. Nanoencapsulation in mucoadhesive chitosan nanoparticles (CHNP) substantially increased the bioavailability and serum stability of SR9. The mechanism of nanoparticle uptake was studied extensively in vitro and in ex vivo models. Our results confirmed that CHNP-SR9 protected primary cells from autophagy and successfully induced tumor-specific apoptosis via both extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathways. CHNP-SR9 significantly reduced the tumor spheroid size (three-dimensional model) by nearly 7-fold. Effects of SR9 and CHNP-SR9 were studied on 35 key molecules involved in the apoptotic pathway. Highly significant (4.26-fold, P&le;0.005) reduction in tumor volume was observed using an in vivo mouse xenograft colon cancer model. It was also observed that net apoptotic (6.25-fold, P&le;0.005) and necrotic indexes (3.5-fold, P&le;0.05) were comparatively higher in CHNP-SR9 when compared to void CHNP and CHNP-SR9 internalized more in cancer stem cells (4.5-fold, P&le;0.005). We concluded that nanoformulation of SR9 did not reduce its therapeutic potential; however, nanoformulation provided SR9 with enhanced stability and better bioavailability. Our study presents a highly tumor-specific protein-based cancer therapy that has several advantages over the normally used chemotherapeutics

    Discovery of Gamma-ray Pulsations from the Transitional Redback PSR J1227-4853

    The 1.69 ms spin period of PSR J1227-4853 was recently discovered in radio observations of the low-mass X-ray binary XSS J12270-4859 following the announcement of a possible transition to a rotation-powered millisecond pulsar state, inferred from decreases in optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray flux from the source. We report the detection of significant (5σ\sigma) gamma-ray pulsations after the transition, at the known spin period, using ~1 year of data from the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The gamma-ray light curve of PSR J1227-4853 can be fit by one broad peak, which occurs at nearly the same phase as the main peak in the 1.4 GHz radio profile. The partial alignment of light-curve peaks in different wavebands suggests that at least some of the radio emission may originate at high altitude in the pulsar magnetosphere, in extended regions co-located with the gamma-ray emission site. We folded the LAT data at the orbital period, both pre- and post-transition, but find no evidence for significant modulation of the gamma-ray flux. Analysis of the gamma-ray flux over the mission suggests an approximate transition time of 2012 November 30. Continued study of the pulsed emission and monitoring of PSR J1227-4853, and other known redback systems, for subsequent flux changes will increase our knowledge of the pulsar emission mechanism and transitioning systems.Comment: 5 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ, updated to reflect accepted version and add additional coautho

    A Crucial Test for Color-Octet Production Mechanism in Z^0 Decays

    The direct production rates of DD-wave charmonia in the decays of Z0Z^0 is evaluated. The color-octet production processes Z0→3DJ(ccˉ)qqˉZ^0\rightarrow ^3D_J(c\bar c) q\bar q are shown to have distinctively large branching ratios, the same order of magnitude as that of J/ψJ/\psi prodution, as compared with other DD-wave charmonium production mechanisms. This may suggest a crucial channel to test the color-octet mechanism as well as to observe the DD-wave charmonium states in Z0Z^0 decays. In addition, a signal for the 3DJ^3D_J charmonium as strong as J/ψJ/\psi or ψâ€Č\psi^\prime with large transverse momentum at the Tevatron should also be observed.Comment: 14 pages in LaTex (3 figures in PS-file

    Validation and reliability of the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly in Chinese population

    Objectives: Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) is a widely used questionnaire in epidemiological studies for assessing the physical activity level of elderly. This study aims to translate and validate PASE in Chinese population. Design: Cross-sectional study. Subjects: Chinese elderly aged 65 or above. Methods: The original English version of PASE was translated into Chinese (PASE-C) following standardized translation procedures. Ninety Chinese elderly aged 65 or above were recruited in the community. Test-retest reliability was determined by comparing the scores obtained from two separate administrations by the intraclass correlation coefficient. Validity was evaluated by Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients between PASE and Medical Outcome Survey 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), grip strength, single-leg-stance, 5 times sit-to-stand and 10-m walk. Results: PASE-C demonstrated good test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient  =0.81). Fair to moderate association were found between PASE-C and most of the subscales of SF-36 (rs=0.285 to 0.578, p<0.01), grip strength (rs=0.405 to 0.426, p<0.001), single-leg-stance (rs =0.470 to 0.548, p<0.001), 5 times sit-to-stand (rs =–0.33, p=0.001) and 10-m walk (rs =–0.281, p=0.007). Conclusion: PASE-C is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing the physical activity level of elderly in Chinese population

    Hadronic Production of S-wave and P-wave Charmed Beauty Mesons via Heavy Quark Fragmentation

    At hadron colliders the dominant production mechanism of (bˉc)(\bar bc) mesons with large transverse momentum is due to parton fragmentation. We compute the rates and transverse momentum spectra for production of S-wave and P-wave (bˉc)(\bar b c) mesons at the Tevatron via the direct fragmentation of the bottom antiquark as well as the Altarelli-Parisi induced gluon fragmentation. Since all the radially and orbitally excited (bˉc)(\bar b c) mesons below the BDBD flavor threshold will cascade into the pseudoscalar ground state BcB_c through electromagnetic and/or hadronic transitions, they all contribute to the inclusive production of BcB_c. The contributions of the excited S-wave and P-wave states to the inclusive production of BcB_c are 58 and 23\%, respectively, and hence significant.Comment: Changes are made in the Discussio

    Gluon fragmentation to ^3D_J quarkonia

    We present a calculation of the leading order QCD fragmentation functions for gluons to split into spin-triplet D-wave quarkonia. We apply them to evaluate the gluon fragmentation contributions to inclusive ^3D_J quarkonium production at large transverse momentum processes like the Tevatron and find that the D-wave quarkonia, especially the charmonium 2^{--} state, could be observed through color-octet mechanism with present luminosity. Since there are distinctively large gaps between the contributions of two different (i.e, color-singlet and color-octet) quarkonium production mechanisms, our results may stand as a unique test to NRQCD color-octet quarkonium production mechanism.Comment: 15 pages in LaTex (2 figures in PS-file

    Radio Detection of the Fermi LAT Blind Search Millisecond Pulsar J1311-3430

    We report the detection of radio emission from PSR J1311-3430, the first millisecond pulsar discovered in a blind search of Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) gamma-ray data. We detected radio pulsations at 2 GHz, visible for <10% of ~4.5-hrs of observations using the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). Observations at 5 GHz with the GBT and at several lower frequencies with Parkes, Nancay, and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope resulted in non-detections. We also report the faint detection of a steep spectrum continuum radio source (0.1 mJy at 5 GHz) in interferometric imaging observations with the Jansky Very Large Array. These detections demonstrate that PSR J1311-3430, is not radio quiet and provides additional evidence that the radio beaming fraction of millisecond pulsars is very large. The radio detection yields a distance estimate of 1.4 kpc for the system, yielding a gamma-ray efficiency of 30%, typical of LAT-detected MSPs. We see apparent excess delay in the radio pulsar as the pulsar appears from eclipse and we speculate on possible mechanisms for the non-detections of the pulse at other orbital phases and observing frequencies.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures.     Charged and Pseudoscalar Higgs production at a Muon Collider

    We consider single charged Higgs (H±H^{\pm}) and pseudoscalar Higgs (A0A^0) production in association with a gauge boson at ÎŒ+Ό−\mu^+\mu^- colliders. We find that the tree-level t-channel and s-channel contributions to ÎŒ+Ό−→H±W∓,A0Z\mu^+\mu^-\to H^{\pm}W^{\mp}, A^0Z are enhanced for large values of tan⁥ÎČ\tan\beta, allowing sizeable cross-sections whose analogies at e+e−e^+e^- colliders would be very small.
