Chaos and isospin symmetry breaking in rotational nuclei
For nuclei with N = Z, the isospin degree of freedom is important and, for
deformed systems, rotational bands of different isospin may be expected at low
excitation energies. We have investigated, in a simple model space, the
influence of the isospin-breaking Coulomb interaction on the degree of
chaoticity of these rotational bands. The statistical measures used rely on an
analysis of level-spacing distributions, which are extremely difficult to
measure experimentally. We show, however, that the overlap intergrals between
states of similar frequency reflect well the degree of chaoticity. This
quantity is closely related to the experimentally more accessible gamma-decay
``spreading width''.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, Elsevie
The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory
The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory is a second generation water Cherenkov
detector designed to determine whether the currently observed solar neutrino
deficit is a result of neutrino oscillations. The detector is unique in its use
of D2O as a detection medium, permitting it to make a solar model-independent
test of the neutrino oscillation hypothesis by comparison of the charged- and
neutral-current interaction rates. In this paper the physical properties,
construction, and preliminary operation of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory are
described. Data and predicted operating parameters are provided whenever
possible.Comment: 58 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Nucl. Inst. Meth. Uses elsart and

On the mechanisms governing gas penetration into a tokamak plasma during a massive gas injection
A new 1D radial fluid code, IMAGINE, is used to simulate the penetration of gas into a tokamak plasma during a massive gas injection (MGI). The main result is that the gas is in general strongly braked as it reaches the plasma, due to mechanisms related to charge exchange and (to a smaller extent) recombination. As a result, only a fraction of the gas penetrates into the plasma. Also, a shock wave is created in the gas which propagates away from the plasma, braking and compressing the incoming gas. Simulation results are quantitatively consistent, at least in terms of orders of magnitude, with experimental data for a D 2 MGI into a JET Ohmic plasma. Simulations of MGI into the background plasma surrounding a runaway electron beam show that if the background electron density is too high, the gas may not penetrate, suggesting a possible explanation for the recent results of Reux et al in JET (2015 Nucl. Ancient pigs reveal a near-complete genomic turnover following their introduction to Europe
Archaeological evidence indicates that pig domestication had begun by ∼10,500 y before the present (BP) in the Near East, and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) suggests that pigs arrived in Europe alongside farmers ∼8,500 y BP. A few thousand years after the introduction of Near Eastern pigs into Europe, however, their characteristic mtDNA signature disappeared and was replaced by haplotypes associated with European wild boars. This turnover could be accounted for by substantial gene flow from local European wild boars, although it is also possible that European wild boars were domesticated independently without any genetic contribution from the Near East. To test these hypotheses, we obtained mtDNA sequences from 2,099 modern and ancient pig samples and 63 nuclear ancient genomes from Near Eastern and European pigs. Our analyses revealed that European domestic pigs dating from 7,100 to 6,000 y BP possessed both Near Eastern and European nuclear ancestry, while later pigs possessed no more than 4% Near Eastern ancestry, indicating that gene flow from European wild boars resulted in a near-complete disappearance of Near East ancestry. In addition, we demonstrate that a variant at a locus encoding black coat color likely originated in the Near East and persisted in European pigs. Altogether, our results indicate that while pigs were not independently domesticated in Europe, the vast majority of human-mediated selection over the past 5,000 y focused on the genomic fraction derived from the European wild boars, and not on the fraction that was selected by early Neolithic farmers over the first 2,500 y of the domestication process
A program for coupled-channel calculations with all order couplings for heavy-ion fusion reactions
14 pages, submitted to CPC, the program is available upon request from [email protected] FORTRAN77 program is presented that calculates fusion cross sections and mean angular momenta of the compound nucleus under the influence of couplings between the relative motion and several nuclear collective motions. The no-Coriolis approximation is employed to reduce the dimension of coupled-channels equations. The program takes into account the effects of non-linear couplings to all orders, which have been shown to play an important role in heavy-ion fusion reactions at subbarrier energies
Alpha-particle decay through a deformed barrier
The territorial dialogue reveals to be, indeed, a process of stake in common of objectives which the group in charge of the territorial organization should share or in any cases which he should make his. Whereas a joint territorial policy can be the actual result of this reflection and opens the actors in a territorial coordination. This coordination is a process rationalizing of vision of the world which applies to the territory. This process collects the actors and transforms them into a collective actor: the practice of the territorial watch participates of this territorial policy joint and introduced in upstream. The territorial dialogue is so preliminary, possibly , in a joint territorial policy. It has for goal to come to an agreement on a territorial vision, and on an explicit gratitude(recognition) of the legitimacy of the actors having power to act on this vision. The recognition and so, the nearness, obtains by a link of the vision which hold the actors
