Quantitative structural and textural assessment of laminar pyrocarbons through Raman spectroscopy, electron diffraction and few other techniques

    Get PDF
In pyrocarbon materials, the width of the Raman D band (FWHMD) is very sensitive to low energy structural defects (e.g., disorientations of the graphene layers). The correlation between the two parameters, FWHMD and OA (as derived from selected area electron diffraction: SAED), has allowed to differentiate various pyrocarbons unambiguously. Furthermore, the optical properties of pyrocarbons, i.e., the extinction angle, the optical phase shift and the ordinary and extraordinary reflectance, have been accurately determined at 550 nm by means of the extinction curves method. These results are completed by in-plane and out-of-plane dielectric constant measurements by angular resolved EELS. Moreover, the hybridization degree of the carbon atoms has been assessed by the same technique. About 80% of the carbon atoms of the pyrocarbons have a sp2 hybridization. The lack of pure sp2 carbon atoms, as compared to graphite, might be explained by the presence of sp3-like line defects.Comment: Xavier Bourrat : Present Address = ISTO - CNRS-Universit\'e d'Orl\'ean

The James Webb Space Telescope Mission

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least 4m4m. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the 6.5m6.5m James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite detailed reports on the design and the measured performance on orbit.Comment: Accepted by PASP for the special issue on The James Webb Space Telescope Overview, 29 pages, 4 figure

MĂ©dication officinale et prise en charge du petit risque

    No full text

    No full text

A Study on Components and Assembly Primitives in B

    No full text
. This paper is the result of a reflexion coming from the usage and learning of the language B. It tries to better explain and understand the assembly primitives includes and uses of the language. It presents a high-level notion of components and develops a "component algebra". This algebra is specialized to deal with the B-components. The B assembly primitives are re-expressed in this basic formalism. Some problems about independence of concepts in the B methodology are pointed out and are discussed. 1 Introduction Specifications, like programs, must be modular because very large formal texts are not understandable for a human being. So, the study of modules and modularization is one of the issues in software engineering. The three main objectives of modularization [BHK90] are : information hiding, compositionality of module operations and reusability of modules. If the specification methodology encompasses the need for formal proofs to ensure consistency, as it is the case in the B ..

From hospitalisation to primary care: integrative model of clinical pharmacy with patients implanted with a PICC line—research protocol for a prospective before–after study

    No full text
Introduction Clinical pharmacy improves patient safety and secures drug management using information, education and good clinical practices. However, medical device management is still unexplored, and proof of effectiveness is needed. A PICC line (peripherally inserted central catheter) is a medical device for infusion. It accesses the central venous system after being implanted in a peripheral vein. However, complications after implantation often interfere with smooth execution of the treatment. We hypothesise that clinical pharmacy for medical devices could be as effective as clinical pharmacy for medications. The main objective is to assess the effectiveness of clinical pharmacy activities on the complication rate after PICC line implantation. Methods and analysis This is a before–after prospective study. The study will begin with an observational period without clinical pharmacy activities, followed by an interventional period where pharmacists will intervene on drug and medical device management and provide personalised follow-up and advice. Sixty-nine adult patients will be recruited in each 6-month period from all traditional care units. The main inclusion criteria will be the implantation of a PICC line. The primary outcome is the decrease in the number of complications per patient and per month. Secondary outcomes are the consultation and hospital readmission rates, the acceptance rate of pharmaceutical interventions, the patients’ quality of life, the direct hospital induced or avoided costs and the participants’ satisfaction. Data will be collected using case report forms during hospitalisation and telephone follow-up after discharge. The analysis will compare these criteria during the two periods.Ethics and dissemination The study has received the approval of our Ethics Committee (Clermont-Ferrand Southeast VI, France, number AU1586). Results will be made available to the patients or their caregivers, the sponsor and other researchers when asked, as described in the consent form.Trial registration number NCT04359056

The mouse dorsal skinfold chamber as a model for the study of thrombolysis by intravital microscopy.: Thrombolysis imaging in the mouse skinfold chamber

International audienceAlthough intravital microscopy models of thrombosis in mice have contributed to dissect the mechanisms of thrombus formation and stability, they have not been well adapted to study long-term evolution of occlusive thrombi. Here, we assessed the suitability of the dorsal skinfold chamber (DSC) for the study of thrombolysis and testing of thrombolytic agents by intravital microscopy. We show that induction of FeCl3-induced occlusive thrombosis is achievable in microvessels of DSCs, and that thrombi formed in DSCs can be visualised by intravital microscopy using brightfield transmitted light, or fluorescent staining of thrombus components such as fibrinogen, platelets, leukocytes, and von Willebrand factor. Direct application of control saline or recombinant tissue-plasminogen activator (rtPA) to FeCl3-produced thrombi in DSCs did not affect thrombus size or induce recanalisation. However, in the presence of hirudin, rtPA treatment caused a rapid dose-dependent lysis of occlusive thrombi, resulting in recanalisation within 1 hour after treatment. Skin haemorrhage originating from vessels located inside and outside the FeCl3-injured area was also observed in DSCs of rtPA-treated mice. We further show that rtPA-induced thrombolysis was enhanced in plasminogen activator inhibitor-1-deficient (PAI-1-/-) mice, and dropped considerably as the time between occlusion and treatment application increased. Together, our results show that by allowing visualization and measurement of thrombus lysis and potential bleeding complications of thrombolytic treatments, the DSC provides a model for studying endogenous fibrinolysis and for first-line screening of thrombolytic agents. Furthermore, using this system, we found that thrombin and clot aging impair the thrombolytic action of rtPA towards FeCl3-produced thrombi
