    Forbidden oxygen lines at various nucleocentric distances in comets

    To study the formation of the [OI] lines - i.e., 5577 A (the green line), 6300 A and 6364 A (the two red lines) - in the coma of comets and to determine the parent species of the oxygen atoms using the green to red-doublet emission intensity ratio (G/R ratio) and the lines velocity widths. We acquired at the ESO VLT high-resolution spectroscopic observations of comets C/2002 T7 (LINEAR), 73P-C/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3, 8P/Tuttle, and, 103P/Hartley 2 when they were close to the Earth (< 0.6 au). Using the observed spectra, we determined the intensities and the widths of the three [OI] lines. We have spatially extracted the spectra in order to achieve the best possible resolution of about 1-2", i.e., nucleocentric projected distances of 100 to 400 km depending on the geocentric distance of the comet. We have decontaminated the [OI] green line from C2 lines blends. It is found that the observed G/R ratio on all four comets varies as a function of nucleocentric projected distance. This is mainly due to the collisional quenching of O(1S) and O(1D) by water molecules in the inner coma. The observed green emission line width is about 2.5 km/s and decreases as the distance from the nucleus increases which can be explained by the varying contribution of CO2 to the O(1S) production in the innermost coma. The photodissociation of CO2 molecules seems to produce O(1S) closer to the nucleus while the water molecule forms all the O(1S) and O(1D) atoms beyond 1000 km. Thus we conclude that the main parent species producing O(1S) and O(1D) in the inner coma is not always the same. The observations have been interpreted in the framework of the coupled-chemistry-emission model of Bhardwaj & Raghuram (2012) and the upper limits of CO2 relative abundances are derived from the observed G/R ratios.     The Smallest Mass Ratio Young Star Spectroscopic Binaries

    Using high resolution near-infrared spectroscopy with the Keck telescope, we have detected the radial velocity signatures of the cool secondary components in four optically identified pre-main-sequence, single-lined spectroscopic binaries. All are weak-lined T Tauri stars with well-defined center of mass velocities. The mass ratio for one young binary, NTTS 160905-1859, is M2/M1 = 0.18+/-0.01, the smallest yet measured dynamically for a pre-main-sequence spectroscopic binary. These new results demonstrate the power of infrared spectroscopy for the dynamical identification of cool secondaries. Visible light spectroscopy, to date, has not revealed any pre-main-sequence secondary stars with masses <0.5 M_sun, while two of the young systems reported here are in that range. We compare our targets with a compilation of the published young double-lined spectroscopic binaries and discuss our unique contribution to this sample.Comment: Accepted for publication in the April, 2002, ApJ; 6 figure

    Microstructural and elasto-plastic material parameters identification by inverse finite elements method of Ti(1-x) AlxN (0 < x < 1 sputtered thin films from Berkovich nano-indentation experiments

    International audienceThe mechanical properties of Ti(1 − x)AlxN (0 b x b 1) films of different thicknesses deposited by r.f. reactive magnetron sputtering on Si b100N and high speed steel substrates have been investigated. The as-deposited coatings have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, four-probe electric resistivity method,mechanical deflection of cantilever beams and Berkovich nano-indentation tests associated with inverse finite elements analysis. The coatings with x b 0.58-0.59 present a cubic structure whereas for x N 0.7 a hexagonal structure is observed. Between these two compositions cubic and hexagonal structures coexist. The roughness depends on the film thickness and on the Al content and a minimumassociated to a very fine microstructure is clearly observed in the two-phase coatings. The electric resistivity sharply increases as soon as the hcp structure appears (x ~ 0.6). The mean residual stresses are compressive, except for the AlN coating, and present a minimum at the neighborhood of x ~ 0.64 where a mixed structure is observed. The indentation modulus MbhklN and the Berkovich hardness HBbhklN greatly depend on the Al content and a progressive decreasing has been observed for 0.58 b x b 0.7. For the MbhklN evolution, a simple model taking into account the stiffness coefficients of TiN and AlN structures, the mean residual stress level and the variations of the lattice parameters in the two structure domains is proposed. Knowing the elastic properties of these films, inverse finite elements analysis of the indentation curves considering a simple isotropic linear elasto-plastic behavior allows, as a function of the composition, the yield stress σY and the linear hardening coefficient Hp⁎ to be estimated. σY and Hp⁎ are in the ranges 4.2 to 6.8 GPa and 60 to 400 GPa, respectively. The maximum value of Hp⁎/σY which characterizes the ability of these coatings to exhibit plastic strain hardening is maximum for x = 0.5 and 0.6. The quality of the estimation was discussed through a practical identifiability study and quantified using an identifiability index. Tip radius and elasticity of the Berkovich indenter are two very relevant parameters to improve identifiability and correctly extract the plastic parameters of the behavior law.     Intravacular large B-cell lymphoma (LIV) is a rare entity individualized in the WHO classification since 2001 as a subtype of extranodal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. We report two autopsic cases of LIV: a 77-year-old woman presenting with fever, dyspnea, antehypophyseal failure and a 54-year-old man presenting with fever, weight-loss, night-sweats and encephalopathy. They died respectively 10 and 7 months after the beginning of symptoms, without diagnosis. Neither infectious disease nor lymphomatous proliferation had been identified. From these two cases and our literature review, we insist on the importance of histopathological diagnosis on biopsy for this rare pathology which clinical diagnosis remains difficult

    The night-sky at the Calar Alto Observatory II: The sky at the near infrared

    We present here the characterization of the night sky-brightness at the near-infrared, the telescope seeing, and the fraction of useful time at the Calar Alto observatory. For this study we have collected a large dataset comprising 7311 near-infrared images taken regularly along the last four years for the ALHAMBRA survey (J, H and Ks-bands), together with a more reduced dataset of additional near-infrared images taken for the current study. In addition we collected the information derived by the meteorological station at the observatory during the last 10 years, together with the results from the cloud sensor for the last ~2 years. We analyze the dependency of the near-infrared night sky-brightness with the airmass and the seasons, studying its origins and proposing a zenithal correction. A strong correlation is found between the night sky-brightness in the Ks-band and the air temperature, with a gradient of ~ -0.08 mag per 1 C degree. The typical (darkest) night sky-brightness in the J, H and Ks-band are 15.95 mag (16.95 mag), 13.99 mag (14.98 mag) and 12.39 mag (13.55 mag), respectively. These values show that Calar Alto is as dark in the near-infrared as most of the other astronomical astronomical sites in the world that we could compare with. Only Mauna Kea is clearly darker in the Ks-band. The typical telescope seeing at the 3.5m is ~1.0" when converted to the V-band, being only slightly larger than the atmospheric seeing measured at the same time by the seeing monitor, ~0.9". Finally we estimate the fraction of useful time based on the relative humidity, gust wind speed and presence of clouds. This fraction, ~72%, is very similar to the one derived in Paper I, based on the fraction of time when the extinction monitor is working.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, accepted to be published in PAS

    Management of imatinib-resistant CML patients

    Imatinib has had marked impact on outcomes in chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) patients for all stages of the disease and is endorsed by international treatment guidelines as the first line option. Although imatinib is highly effective and well tolerated, the development of resistance represents a clinical challenge. Since the most frequently identified mechanism of acquired imatinib resistance is bcr-abl kinase domain point mutations, periodic hematologic, cytogenetic, and molecular monitoring is critical throughout imatinib therapy. Once cytogenetic remission is achieved, residual disease can be monitored by bcr-abl transcript levels as assayed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Detection of bcr-abl mutants prior to and during imatinib therapy can aid in risk stratification as well as in determining therapeutic strategies. Thus, mutation screening is indicated in patients lacking or losing hematologic response. Moreover, search for mutations should also be performed when a 3-log reduction of bcr-abl transcripts is not achieved or there is a reproducible increase of transcript levels. In patients harboring mutations which confer imatinib resistance, novel second line tyrosine kinase inhibitors have demonstrated encouraging efficacy with low toxicity. Only the T315I bcr-abl mutant has proved totally resistant to all clinically available bcr-abl inhibitors. Strategies to further increase the rates of complete molecular remissions represent the next frontier in the targeted therapy of CML patients

    Component Masses of the Young Spectroscopic Binary UZ Tau E

    We report estimates of the masses of the component stars in the pre-main-sequence spectroscopic binary UZ Tau E. These results come from the combination of our measurements of the mass ratio, M2/M1=0.28 +/-0.01, obtained using high resolution H-band spectroscopy, with the total mass of the system, (1.31 +/-0.08)(D/140pc) M_sun, derived from millimeter observations of the circumbinary disk (Simon et al. 2000). The masses of the primary and secondary are (1.016 +/-0.065)(D/140pc) M_sun and (0.294 +/-0.027)(D/140pc) M_sun, respectively. Using the orbital parameters determined from our six epochs of observation, we find that the inclination of the binary orbit, 59.8 +/-4.4 degrees, is consistent with that determined for the circumbinary disk from the millimeter observations, indicating that the disk and binary orbits are probably coplanar.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    Effect of hypoxia/reoxygenation on the cytokine-induced production of nitric oxide and superoxide anion in cultured osteoarthritic synoviocytes

    SummaryObjectiveHypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) is an important feature in the osteoarthritis (OA) physiopathology. Nitric oxide (NO) is a significant proinflammatory mediator in the inflamed synovium. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of H/R on inducible NO synthase (iNOS) activity and expression in OA synoviocytes. In addition we studied the relationship between nitrosative stress and NADPH oxidase (NOX) in such conditions.MethodsHuman cultured synoviocytes from OA patients were treated for 24 h with interleukin 1-ÎČ (IL-1ÎČ), tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α) or neither; for the last 6 h, they were submitted to either normoxia or three periods of 1-h of hypoxia followed by 1-h of reoxygenation. NO metabolism (iNOS expression, nitrite and peroxynitrite measurements) was investigated. Furthermore, superoxide anion O2− production, NOX subunit expression and nitrosylation were also assessed.ResultsiNOS expression and nitrite (but not peroxynitrite) production were significantly increased under H/R conditions when compared with to normoxia (P < 0.05). H/R conditions decreased O2− production from ∌0.20 to ∌0.12 nmol min−1 mg proteins−1 (P < 0.05), while NOXs' subunit expression and p47-phox phosphorylation were increased. NOXs and p47-phox were dramatically nitrosylated under H/R conditions (P < 0.05 vs normoxia). Using NOS inhibitors under H/R conditions, p47-phox nitrosylation was prevented and O2− production was restored at normoxic levels (0.21 nmol min−1 mg of proteins−1).ConclusionsOur results provide evidence for an up-regulation of iNOS activity in OA synoviocytes under H/R conditions, associated to a down-regulation of NOX activity through nitrosylation. These findings highlight the importance of radical production to OA pathogenesis, and appraise the metabolic modifications of synovial cells under hypoxia
