The Dietary Patterns of Fourth-Year Students at the College of the Holy Cross

    Get PDF
The college years are commonly marked as a period of time in which students have to learn how to live independently for the first time by formulating new routines and habits such as making daily food choices. The College of the Holy Cross, a private Jesuit college located in Worcester, Massachusetts, offers first, second, and third-year students a meal plan providing unlimited access into Kimball, the main dining hall on campus. Additionally, 425 dining dollars are loaded onto student identification cards that can be used at any of the fast food restaurants and/or the convenience store on campus. Contrastingly, the fourth-year students live in apartments or off-campus houses, so they are on a separate meal plan that limits their access into Kimball to 50 visits but increases their dining dollars to $975. They are therefore responsible for buying their own groceries and cooking meals even though many have limited time and no access to cars. To limit barriers to nutritional eating, a weekly farmers’ market was brought to campus, where students could use dining dollars to buy fresh produce. In a Food and Drink class, students’ eating habits and mindfulness of nutrition were also observed, while they kept food journals for two weeks and wrote reflective essays about the experience. Changes in food choices and eating habits resulting from the farmers’ market and the food journals were analyzed from a series of surveys, interviews, and essays. Conclusions about improving access to healthier food options on campus are provided

Burnout and work engagement of South African blue-collar workers: The development of a new scale

    Get PDF
Research in South Africa on work-related well-being (specifically burnout and work engagement) has focused mainly on white-collar workers. Although blue-collar workers form a major part of the South African work force, no valid and reliable instruments exist to measure burnout and work engagement of blue-collar workers. The objectives of this study were (1) to develop a work-related well-being scale that measures burnout and work engagement of blue-collar workers; (2) to test the newly developed items using Rasch analysis; and (3) to test the factorial validity and reliability of the new scale. A cross-sectional survey design was used in a convenience sample of blue-collar workers in different industries in South Africa (N=2769). Following scale development procedures, a scale was developed to measure burnout (exhaustion and cynicism) and work engagement(vigour and dedication). Using Rasch analyses, two items were eliminated, resulting in an 18-item instrument. Five items were retained to measure exhaustion, five items to measure cynicism, four items to measure vigour and four items to measure dedication. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis showed that a twofactor model with two higher-order factors – burnout (consisting of exhaustion and cynicism) and work engagement (consisting of vigour and dedication) – fit the data best. All the scales were reliable

    Characterizing topologies by continuous selfmaps

    Get PDF
Various topological spaces are examined in an effort to describe topological spaces from a knowledge of their class of continuous selfmaps or their class of autohomeomorphisms. Relationships between topologies and their continuous selfmaps are considered. Several examples of topological spaces are given and their corresponding classes of continuous selfmaps are described completely. The problem, given a set X and a topology U when does there exist a topology V either weaker or stronger than U such that the class of continuous selfmaps of (X,V) contains the class of continuous selfmaps of (X,U), is considered. M* and S** spaces are defined and some their properties are considered. Two M* (or S**) spaces are shown to be homeomorphic if and only if certain semigroups of continuous selfmaps are isomorphic --Abstract, page ii

The Marquette Hours: Production and Devotion

    Get PDF
Despite the ubiquitous nature of medieval Books of Hours, prayer books for the laity, each manuscript presents evidence about its production and reception. This thesis undertakes the study of a little known Book of Hours housed at the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University. First, an analysis of the manuscript determined all the components of its production including the preparation of the pages, the assemblage, the script and the illumination. This process in concordance with the information provided by the museum, scholarly input, and heraldic evidence implied a fifteenth century provincial French production. Through formal, comparative, and iconographical analysis such implications were confirmed and a potential Avignon workshop identified. Specific miniatures from the book was then considered to ascertain how a medieval patron may have related to and reflected upon such imagery. This iconographical analysis demonstrated that medieval imagery is multivalent in that it signifies and embodies the various texts in the book, providing visuals for prolonged and contemplative prayer. Also, imagery is used to inform and reinforce the medieval 4 ideologies and attitudes regarding domesticity, conceptions of race, and sexuality. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the scholarship on illuminated manuscripts as well as shed light on an obscure Book of Hours that could conceivably be from the workshop of Pierre Villate and created at the request of the Avignon nobleman, Jean-Baptiste de Brancas in 1474

    Dúo vocal de composiciones originales

    Get PDF

Present challenges and some critical issues for research in industrial/ organisational psychology in South Africa.

    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to determine a set of problems and critical issues that researchers in Industrial and Organisational Psychology deem to be important areas for immediate and future enquiry. The changing identity of this field of application is investigated, more relevant paradigms in the study of organisational health and wellness is explored and methods, techniques and interventions suitable to the South African context are suggested. Conclusions are formulated to increase the ability of organisations to work towards economic development, while promoting the wellness and quality of life of employees

First record of \u3ci\u3eAncognatha erythrodera\u3c/i\u3e (Blanchard, 1846) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Cyclocephalini) in the altiplano of Chile

The presence of Ancognatha erythrodera (Blanchard, 1846) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) is confirmed for the first time in Chile based on male and female specimens collected in the extreme north of the country. This is the second species of Ancognatha Erichson, 1847 recorded in Chile. Morphological characters, illustrations of male genitalia, male and female habitus photographs of this species, and additional records in Argentina and Bolivia are provided. A map with the collection sites and montane habitats photograph in Chile are included. The Dynastinae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) that occur in Chile were comprehensively revised by Ratcliffe et al. (2021), who recorded nine species in six genera. One of these genera, Ancognatha Erichson, 1847, includes 23 valid species found from the southwestern United States (Arizona and New Mexico) to northern Argentina, Chile, and Bolivia (Mondaca 2016; Moore et al. 2018a; Paucar-Cabrera and Ratcliffe 2018; Ratcliffe et al. 2021). In this note, we report the first record of Ancognatha erythrodera (Blanchard, 1846) in Chile, based on specimens collected in the altiplanic locality of Visviri, Región de Arica y Parinacota. Previously, Ancognatha erythrodera was recorded for the Andes of southern Peru, Bolivia, and northwestern Argentina (Moore et al. 2018b). This new record corresponds to the natural distribution of this species on both sides of the Andes mountain range, which is not surprising due to the similarity of habitats in neighboring localities in Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina
