    Natural Cycles, Gases

    The major gaseous components of the exhaust of stratospheric aircraft are expected to be the products of combustion (CO2 and H2O), odd nitrogen (NO, NO2 HNO3), and products indicating combustion inefficiencies (CO and total unburned hydrocarbons). The species distributions are produced by a balance of photochemical and transport processes. A necessary element in evaluating the impact of aircraft exhaust on the lower stratospheric composition is to place the aircraft emissions in perspective within the natural cycles of stratospheric species. Following are a description of mass transport in the lower stratosphere and a discussion of the natural behavior of the major gaseous components of the stratospheric aircraft exhaust

    Supernova Bounds on Supersymmetric RR-parity Violating Interactions

    We re-examine resonant massless-neutrino conversions in a dense medium induced by flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) interactions. We show how the observed νˉe\bar\nu_e energy spectra from SN1987a and the supernova rr-process nucleosynthesis provide constraints on supersymmetric models with RR parity violation, which are much more stringent than those obtained from the laboratory. We also suggest that resonant massless-neutrino conversions may play a positive role in supernova shock reheating. Finally, we examine the constraints on explicit RR-parity-violating FCNCs in the presence of non-zero neutrino masses in the eV range, as indicated by present hot dark matter observations.Comment: latex file, 19 pages, including 5 figure

    IMPACT OF INSTITUTION FACTORS TO UNIVERSITY-INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE: A STUDY BASED ON SRI LANKAN UNIVERSITY SYSTEM

    Get PDF
    Purpose: The study explored the impact of institutional factors have on the university-industry knowledge exchange based on the Sri Lankan university system. Methodology: The study is quantitative and explanatory by nature and it applied the deductive method and questionnaire survey strategy. The study conducted with minimum interference of researcher and individual academics is the unit of analysis. The types of knowledge interaction, university-industry knowledge exchange, and institutional factors were the independent, dependent and moderating variables respectively. A Structural Equation Model is deployed on collected data to explore the moderating impact of the institutional factor on the university-industry knowledge exchange. Implications: It implies that the level of joint, contract research activities, human resource mobility, and training of academic staff are largely wider on the conducive environment and sophisticated facilities of the university. Main Findings: First, study evidence that there are statistically significant impacts of type of interactions and institutional factors on university-industry knowledge exchange.  Further, the study confirmed the moderating power of institutional factors over the knowledge exchange process. Novelty: There is a lack of research literature discussing the moderating effect of institutional factors on the university-industry knowledge exchange process

    Conifold Transitions for Complete Intersection Calabi-Yau 3-folds in Products of Projective Spaces

    Full text link
    We prove that a generic complete intersection Calabi-Yau 3-fold defined by sections of ample line bundles on a product of projective spaces admits a conifold transition to a connected sum of S^{3} \times S^{3}. In this manner, we obtain complex structures with trivial canonical bundles on some connected sums of S^{3} \times S^{3}. This construction is an analogue of that made by Friedman, Lu and Tian who used quintics in P^{4}

    PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE USE OF THE HISTORY CARTOGRAPHY

    Lo scritto – con esempi sulla Toscana – esamina: i problemi relativi alla individuazione della cartografia precedente la Carta d’Italia IGM, dei secoli XV-XIX, conservata in numerosi archivi e biblioteche d’Italia e d’Europa, e alle diverse qualità geometriche e contenutistiche delle tante categorie di rappresentazioni specialmente prodotte per finalità amministrative (per i diversi bisogni del potere statale e delle forze economico- sociali); affronta la questione della loro corretta interpretazione ai fini di una loro utilizzazione scientifica (anche per l’azione pratica) nella geografia e negli altri settori disciplinari, con esempi sui rischi dell’uso acritico della cartografia compresa quella geodetica contemporanea.The text – with some examples about Tuscany – considers the problems related to the characterization of the cartography before the “Carta d’Italia” IGM (15th -19th centuries), which is kept in many Italian and European archives and libraries. The text examines various geometric qualities and emphasizes the content of many categories of representations especially those produced for administrative purposes (for different uses in public or social-economic institutions). The text faces up the issue of their correct interpretation for scientific and practical aims in geography and other subjects, with examples of the risks of an uncritical use of cartography as in the contemporary geodesic cartography
