Monopole Constituents inside SU(n) Calorons
We present a simple result for the action density of the SU(n) charge one
periodic instantons - or calorons - with arbitrary non-trivial Polyakov loop
P_oo at spatial infinity. It is shown explicitly that there are n lumps inside
the caloron, each of which represents a BPS monopole, their masses being
related to the eigenvalues of P_oo. A suitable combination of the ADHM

Population Studies. XIII. A New Analysis of the Bidelman-MacConnell "Weak-Metal" Stars - Confirmation of Metal-Poor Stars in the Thick Disk of the Galaxy
A new set of very high signal-to-noise (S/N > 100/1), medium-resolution
(R~3000) optical spectra have been obtained for 302 of the candidate
"weak-metal" stars selected by Bidelman & MacConnell. We use these data to
calibrate the recently developed generalization of the SEGUE Stellar Parameter
Pipeline, and obtain estimates of the atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g , and
[Fe/H]) for these non-SDSS/SEGUE data; we also obtain estimates of [C/Fe]. The
new abundance measurements are shown to be consistent with available
high-resolution spectroscopic determinations, and represent a substantial
improvement over the accuracies obtained from the previous photometric
estimates reported in Paper I of this series. The apparent offset in the
photometric abundances of the giants in this sample noted by several authors is
confirmed by our new spectroscopy; no such effect is found for the dwarfs. The
presence of a metal-weak thick-disk (MWTD) population is clearly supported by
these new abundance data. Some 25% of the stars with metallicities -1.8 <
[Fe/H] <= -0.8 exhibit orbital eccentricities e < 0.4, yet are clearly
separated from members of the inner-halo population with similar metallicities
by their location in a Lindblad energy vs. angular momentum diagram. A
comparison is made with recent results for a similar-size sample of RAVE stars
from Ruchti et al. We conclude, based on both of these samples, that the MWTD
is real, and must be accounted for in discussions of the formation and

Benefits of conservation-driven mowing for the EU policy species Gladiolus palustris Gaudin in mountain fen meadows: a case-study in the European Alps
AbstractThe sword lily Gladiolus palustris Gaudin is protected on European level and listed in Annexes II and IV of the EC Habitat Directive 92/43/EEC. It grows in nutrient-poor, calcareous meadows in central and eastern Europe. Tree encroachment in montane meadows of the European Alps as a result of recent land use changes and the abandonment of traditional farming practices threaten the survival of this species. Conservation-driven mowing is considered a feasible conservation measure for maintaining high species diversity in abandoned semi-natural grasslands. To assess the effects of ten years of biennial mowing on a grassland community in the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, Italy (Site of Community Importance, Natura 2000 network), ten 25 m2 plots were established whereby four plots were placed in the mowed area, four in the non-mowed area and two in a small non-mowed patch of grassland inside the mowed area. In each plot the following variables were recorded, total percentage of plant cover, percentage cover of woody species, percentage cover of herbaceous species, percentage cover and number of flowering ramets of G. palustris and a complete list of species and their percentage abundance. Mowed plots showed a higher species richness than non-mowed plots. The number of G. palustris flowering ramets and percentage cover increased manifold in mowed plots compared to non-mowed plots. The resumption of mowing for conservation purposes undertaken by the managing authority halted the process of tree encroachment and avoided a drastic change in plant composition. Periodic mowing (every second or third year) was demonstrated to be a cost-effective conservation measure in non-productive grasslands to keep grasses at bay in favour of forbs of high conversation value
Moments of the Virtual Photon Structure Function
The photon structure function is a useful testing ground for QCD. It is
perturbatively computable apart from a contribution from what is usually called
the hadronic component of the photon. There have been many proposals for this
nonperturbative part of the real photon structure function. By studying moments
of the virtual photon structure function, we explore the extent to which these

New Instanton Solutions at Finite Temperature
We discuss the newly found exact instanton solutions at finite temperature
with a non-trivial Polyakov loop at infinity. They can be described in terms of
monopole constituents and we discuss in this context an old result due to
Taubes how to make out of monopoles non-trivial topological charge

Incorporating Inductances in Tissue-Scale Models of Cardiac Electrophysiology
In standard models of cardiac electrophysiology, including the bidomain and
monodomain models, local perturbations can propagate at infinite speed. We
address this unrealistic property by developing a hyperbolic bidomain model
that is based on a generalization of Ohm's law with a Cattaneo-type model for
the fluxes. Further, we obtain a hyperbolic monodomain model in the case that
the intracellular and extracellular conductivity tensors have the same
anisotropy ratio. In one spatial dimension, the hyperbolic monodomain model is
equivalent to a cable model that includes axial inductances, and the relaxation
times of the Cattaneo fluxes are strictly related to these inductances. A
purely linear analysis shows that the inductances are negligible, but models of
cardiac electrophysiology are highly nonlinear, and linear predictions may not
capture the fully nonlinear dynamics. In fact, contrary to the linear analysis,
we show that for simple nonlinear ionic models, an increase in conduction
velocity is obtained for small and moderate values of the relaxation time. A
similar behavior is also demonstrated with biophysically detailed ionic models.
Using the Fenton-Karma model along with a low-order finite element spatial
discretization, we numerically analyze differences between the standard
monodomain model and the hyperbolic monodomain model. In a simple benchmark
test, we show that the propagation of the action potential is strongly
influenced by the alignment of the fibers with respect to the mesh in both the
parabolic and hyperbolic models when using relatively coarse spatial
discretizations. Accurate predictions of the conduction velocity require
computational mesh spacings on the order of a single cardiac cell. We also
compare the two formulations in the case of spiral break up and atrial

GRB 091127: The cooling break race on magnetic fuel
Using high-quality, broad-band afterglow data for GRB 091127, we investigate
the validity of the synchrotron fireball model for gamma-ray bursts, and infer
physical parameters of the ultra-relativistic outflow. We used multi-wavelength
follow-up observations obtained with GROND and the XRT onboard the Swift
satellite. The resulting afterglow light curve is of excellent accuracy, and
the spectral energy distribution is well-sampled over 5 decades in energy.
These data present one of the most comprehensive observing campaigns for a
single GRB afterglow and allow us to test several proposed emission models and
outflow characteristics in unprecedented detail. Both the multi-color light
curve and the broad-band SED of the afterglow of GRB 091127 show evidence of a
cooling break moving from high to lower energies. The early light curve is well
described by a broken power-law, where the initial decay in the optical/NIR
wavelength range is considerably flatter than at X-rays. Detailed fitting of
the time-resolved SED shows that the break is very smooth with a sharpness
index of 2.2 +- 0.2, and evolves towards lower frequencies as a power-law with
index -1.23 +- 0.06. These are the first accurate and contemporaneous
measurements of both the sharpness of the spectral break and its time
evolution. The measured evolution of the cooling break (nu_c propto t^-1.2) is
not consistent with the predictions of the standard model, wherein nu_c propto
t^-0.5 is expected. A possible explanation for the observed behavior is a time
dependence of the microphysical parameters, in particular the fraction of the
total energy in the magnetic field epsilon_B. This conclusion provides further
evidence that the standard fireball model is too simplistic, and time-dependent
micro-physical parameters may be required to model the growing number of

BL Lacertae objects beyond redshift 1.3 - UV-to-NIR photometry and photometric redshift for Fermi/LAT blazars
Observations of the gamma-ray sky with Fermi led to significant advances
towards understanding blazars, the most extreme class of Active Galactic
Nuclei. A large fraction of the population detected by Fermi is formed by BL
Lacertae (BL Lac) objects, whose sample has always suffered from a severe
redshift incompleteness due to the quasi-featureless optical spectra. Our goal
is to provide a significant increase of the number of confirmed high-redshift
BL Lac objects contained in the 2 LAC Fermi/LAT catalog. For 103 Fermi/LAT
blazars, photometric redshifts using spectral energy distribution fitting have
been obtained. The photometry includes 13 broad-band filters from the far
ultraviolet to the near-IR observed with Swift/UVOT and the multi-channel
imager GROND at the MPG/ESO 2.2m telescope. Data have been taken
quasi-simultaneously and the remaining source-intrinsic variability has been
corrected for. We release the UV-to-near-IR 13-band photometry for all 103
sources and provide redshift constraints for 75 sources without previously
known redshift. Out of those, eight have reliable photometric redshifts at
z>1.3, while for the other 67 sources we provide upper limits. Six of the
former eight are BL Lac objects, which quadruples the sample of confirmed
high-redshift BL Lac. This includes three sources with redshifts higher than
the previous record for BL Lac, including CRATES J0402-2615 with the best-fit

BRIGHT METAL-POOR STARS FROM THE HAMBURG/ESO SURVEY. II. A CHEMODYNAMICAL ANALYSIS
We obtain estimates of stellar atmospheric parameters for a previously published sample of 1777 relatively bright (9 < B <14) metal-poor candidates from the Hamburg/ESO Survey. The original Frebel et al. analysis of these stars was able to derive estimates of [Fe/H] and [C/Fe] only for a subset of the sample, due to limitations in the methodology then available. A new spectroscopic analysis pipeline has been used to obtain estimates of T[subscript eff], log, g, [Fe/H], and [C/Fe] for almost the entire data set. This sample is very localâabout 90% of the stars are located within 0.5 kpc of the Sun. We consider the chemodynamical properties of these stars in concert with a similarly local sample of stars from a recent analysis of the Bidelman and MacConnell "weak metal" candidates by Beers et al. We use this combined sample to identify possible members of the halo stream of stars suggested by Helmi et al. and Chiba & Beers, as well as stars that may be associated with stripped debris from the putative parent dwarf of the globular cluster Omega Centauri, suggested to exist by previous authors. We identify a clear increase in the cumulative frequency of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars with declining metallicity, as well as an increase in the fraction of CEMP stars with distance from the Galactic plane, consistent with previous results. Incidence of community-acquired lower respiratory tract infections and pneumonia among older adults in the United Kingdom: a population-based study.
Community-acquired lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) and pneumonia (CAP) are common causes of morbidity and mortality among those aged â„65 years; a growing population in many countries. Detailed incidence estimates for these infections among older adults in the United Kingdom (UK) are lacking. We used electronic general practice records from the Clinical Practice Research Data link, linked to Hospital Episode Statistics inpatient data, to estimate incidence of community-acquired LRTI and CAP among UK older adults between April 1997-March 2011, by age, sex, region and deprivation quintile. Levels of antibiotic prescribing were also assessed. LRTI incidence increased with fluctuations over time, was higher in men than women aged â„70 and increased with age from 92.21 episodes/1000 person-years (65-69 years) to 187.91/1000 (85-89 years). CAP incidence increased more markedly with age, from 2.81 to 21.81 episodes/1000 person-years respectively, and was higher among men. For both infection groups, increases over time were attenuated after age-standardisation, indicating that these rises were largely due to population aging. Rates among those in the most deprived quintile were around 70% higher than the least deprived and were generally higher in the North of England. GP antibiotic prescribing rates were high for LRTI but lower for CAP (mostly due to immediate hospitalisation). This is the first study to provide long-term detailed incidence estimates of community-acquired LRTI and CAP in UK older individuals, taking person-time at risk into account. The summary incidence commonly presented for the â„65 age group considerably underestimates LRTI/CAP rates, particularly among older individuals within this group. Our methodology and findings are likely to be highly relevant to health planners and researchers in other countries with aging populations
