The Gelfand problem for the 1-homogeneous p-Laplacian

    Get PDF
In this paper, we study the existence of viscosity solutions to the Gelfand problem for the 1-homogeneous p-Laplacian in a bounded domain Ω ⊂ ℝN, that is, we deal with − 1 p − 1|∇u|2−p div(|∇u|p−2∇u) = λeu in Ω with u = 0 on ∂Ω. For this problem we show that, for p ∈ [2, ∞], there exists a positive critical value λ∗ = λ∗(Ω, N, p) such that the following holds: ∙ If λ < λ∗, the problem admits a minimal positive solution wλ. ∙ If λ > λ∗, the problem admits no solution. Moreover, the branch of minimal solutions {wλ} is increasing with λ. In addition, using degree theory, for fixed p we show that there exists an unbounded continuum of solutions that emanates from the trivial solution u = 0 with λ = 0, and for a small fixed λ we also obtain a continuum of solutions with p ∈ [2, ∞].The first author was partially supported by MINECO–FEDER Grant MTM2015-68210-P (Spain) and Junta de Andalucía FQM-194 (Spain). Multimodal models of animal sex in scientific literature: breaking binaries leads to a better understanding of ecology and evolution

‘Sex’ is often used to describe a suite of phenotypic and genotypic traits of an organism related to reproduction. However, not all these traits are necessarily linked, and the rhetorical collapse of variation into a single term elides much of the complexity inherent in reproductive phenotypes. We conducted a meta-analysis of scientific literature to investigate how terminology related sexual phenotypes changes over time. We find that the conflation of gender and sex has increased, and there is a mammalian bias in this conflation. We highlight how a more inclusive and expansive framework for sex can clarify studies of sexual diversity

Expression of μ-protocadherin is negatively regulated by the activation of the β-catenin signaling pathway in normal and cancer colorectal enterocytes.

Mu-protocadherin (MUCDHL) is an adhesion molecule predominantly expressed by colorectal epithelial cells which is markedly downregulated upon malignant transformation. Notably, treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells with mesalazine lead to increased expression of MUCDHL, and is associated with sequestration of β-catenin on the plasma membrane and inhibition of its transcriptional activity. To better characterize the causal relationship between β-catenin and MUCDHL expression, we performed various experiments in which CRC cell lines and normal colonic organoids were subjected to culture conditions inhibiting (FH535 treatment, transcription factor 7-like 2 siRNA inactivation, Wnt withdrawal) or stimulating (LiCl treatment) β-catenin activity. We show here that expression of MUCDHL is negatively regulated by functional activation of the β-catenin signaling pathway. This finding was observed in cell culture systems representing conditions of physiological stimulation and upon constitutive activation of β-catenin in CRC. The ability of MUCDHL to sequester and inhibit β-catenin appears to provide a positive feedback enforcing the effect of β-catenin inhibitors rather than serving as the primary mechanism responsible for β-catenin inhibition. Moreover, MUCDHL might have a role as biomarker in the development of CRC chemoprevention drugs endowed with β-catenin inhibitory activity

Implementing an LGBTQ Training for Teen Pregnancy Prevention Facilitators

Teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections remain a major health concern and are linked to a number of poor outcomes. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth are particularly at risk for these issues. Although evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention (TPP) programs exist, they are not necessarily tailored to meet the needs of LGBTQ youth. This paper reports on the development and implementation of a LGBTQ training for TPP facilitators working for the Augusta Partnership for Children in Augusta, GA. The four-hour workshop covered a range of topics including terminology, identity, intersectionality, and risk/resilience factors through a combination of lecture, video clips, and interactive activities. The training was well-received with most facilitators rating the training as excellent on satisfaction surveys completed one-week after the training. Qualitative comments were also largely positive; areas for improvement included discussion of the legal context around LGBTQ issues and the impact of race on LGBTQ issues. Future work is needed to expand on these findings by examining the impact of such trainings on TPP program implementation and, ultimately, on LGBTQ youth

This paper aims to link some characteristics of optical toys with the digital image of video games. Therefore, in the first section, we will explore the historical background of optical toys and their relationship with the formation of the modern observer (especially by evaluating the individualized attention as a mean of production in industrial capitalism subjectivity). In the second part, we will observe that, in the underground history of these devices, appear some phenomena related to repetition, contingency and error. These phenomena will increase the tensions between materiality in manual operation (or toying with) of images and the figure of domesticated observer. Thus, the purpose of the last part will be to pursue a conception of the digital images capable of reinstate the materiality as a significant core and, from there, allow to rethink the relationship between imagination and invention (of technologies and games).Fil: Chausovsky, Alexis Ariel.

Determination of Gray Cast Iron Age Strengthening by Nondestructive Methods: Effect of Alloying Elements

    Get PDF
Gray cast iron age strengthening is a phenomenon known as a modification of the alloy's structure by iron nitride precipitation during few days after casting. It generates an evolution of cast iron mechanical properties as a gain of hardness and Young's modulus. In a first time, this article presents the possibility to monitor the aging time and the intensity of age strengthening using two nondestructive methods: nonstandard Rockwell hardness and inert frequencies measurement. In a second time, the study shows the influence of the alloying elements on this phenomenon and particularly the influence of free nitrogen amount, which is a first-order parameter to control aging. Finally, a prediction model of the time and the intensity of age strengthening has been elaborated using the results of the two different monitoring describedConvention CIFRE Renault-LaBoMa
