    Exploring Identifiers of Research Articles Related to Food and Disease using Artificial Intelligence

    The research project aims to understand how variation in writing styles and flexibility of text mining methods control their ability to extract useful information from articles about food and health. Those areas of study are significant because they incorporate features of text mining methods and food-health articles. The project will build a database and mining tools that would change the way we search and collect information from scientific publications and the way we analyze this information for further applications. The strategy to achieve the project’s goal is to engage several teams of undergraduate students in Applied Computing to develop a food-health portal. Some teams will develop text mining tools and others use these tools and existing data-mining tools to extract the portal contents from articles about food-health. The information extracted will create and inform a database of food/health relationships. The project addresses several issues of central importance to the success of text mining techniques extracting useful food-health information for serving society now and in future. Those include: how writing style of an article is determined automatically, how main topic of an article/document is identified automatically, how useful information is extracted from an article/document to help national and international researchers in conducting further research, how available food articles can be quickly utilized to help the society, how undergraduate students gain skills required for extracting useful information from the huge amount of data available on the internet

    Synchronously diagnosed lymph nodal collision tumor of malignant melanoma and chonic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma: case report

    Synchronous composite tumors have been described but are uncommon. Moreover, simultaneous occurrence of synchronous tumors in the same tissue or organ is even less common. We report a case of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)/small lymphocytic lymphoma and malignant melanoma (MM) occurring synchronously in the same lymph node. Several cases of an association between cutaneous malignancies and lymphoproliferative disorders have been reported. Some of which included CLL and MM, occurring in the same patient often CLL after MM. The risk of having CLL after MM has been reported to be increased. Various genetic and environmental etiologies have been postulated, but have as yet not been proven. To our knowledge this is the first time that synchronous occurrence of these two malignant processes in the same tissue is described. In this case it is important that the melanoma was recognized in the excised lymph node, as this finding had much more critical treatment and long term survival consequences

    Effects of the mutations Ala30 to Pro and Ala53 to Thr on the physical and morphological properties of α-synuclein protein implicated in Parkinson's disease

    Abstractα-Synuclein (α-syn) protein has been found in association with the pathological lesions of a number of neurodegenerative diseases. Recently, mutations in the α-syn gene have been reported in families susceptible to an inherited form of Parkinson's disease. We report here that human wild-type α-syn, PD-linked mutant α-syn(Ala30Pro) and mutant α-syn(Ala53Thr) proteins can self-aggregate and form amyloid-like filaments. The mutant α-syn forms more β-sheet and mature filaments than the wild-type protein. These findings suggest that accumulation of α-syn as insoluble deposits of amyloid may play a major role in the pathogenesis of these neurodegenerative diseases

We report a case of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) occurring simultaneously in multiple skin sites. Several cases showing an association between cutaneous malignancies and lymphoproliferative disorders have been reported. Some of these cases included ALL and BCC and occurred often in the pediatric population with the BCC arising as a post-ALL therapy sequela. Other rare genetic causes may be considered. To our knowledge this is the first time that the synchronous occurrence of these two malignant processes in the same tissue involving multiple sites in an elderly patient is described

    Who becomes a teacher and why?

    This paper reports on a comprehensive review of international evidence, synthesising the findings of some of the strongest empirical work on the main factors influencing people's decisions to be teachers or not. Four search engines, including Google and Google Scholar and five electronic databases identified 517 studies of which 212 were included in this narrative synthesis. These studies highlighted three main motivating factors: intrinsic, altruistic and extrinsic, although the order of the ranking varies with subjects, phase of education and gender of teachers. In general, these studies reported that women are more likely to report being motivated by intrinsic and altruistic reasons, while men are more likely to cite extrinsic reasons. Across all cultures, men are reported to be more strongly influenced by social norms and expectations and were less likely to choose primary and early years teaching. Women are also more likely to experience higher levels of career satisfaction and less social dissuasion than men. Research on motivation to teach is also often focused only on those who have already made the decision to teach. Therefore, policies based on these studies might only be attracting those who are already persuaded. This paper argues that to improve recruitment of under-represented groups (e.g., males and STEM subject graduates), attention should instead be on those who might otherwise have gone into teaching, but have not. For this group, the review found that it is the status of the profession, the working environment and salary over the long term that are important

    A Beginner’s Guide to Using Voyant for Digital Theme Analysis

    “Digital Theme Analysis” depicts the role that thematic analysis plays in literary criticism, places traditional thematic analysis approaches alongside digital ones, and offers best practices for carrying out digital thematic analysis in the context of Voyant Tools. The chapter identifies thematic analysis as a meaningful pattern that can be traced throughout text(s) that may form the foundation for critical interpretation. Authors draw continuities between traditional theme analysis that revolves around close reading and digital theme analysis that can be carried out using a variety of automated digital methodologies, and indicate how the latter can help accelerate the process while ensuring that the significance of themes are accurately estimated through an empirical, machined approach. Two applications of digital theme analysis are illustrated using Voyant Tools, a popular open-source tool that combines a variety of simple text-mining tools in a single, intuitive graphical user interface. The first case study is an ecological reading of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, and the second an exploratory thematic analysis of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, through which best practices for carrying out digital thematic analysis are proposed. Together, the chapter demonstrates how digital theme analysis can serve as a point of entry for an almost on-demand approach to digital theme analysis—providing that the researcher understands the applications of the tool and how to prepare and interpret the data, which they can incorporate alongside close reading to create a sophisticated, fully fleshed out literary argument that takes advantage of the unprecedented speed and scope of distant reading
