    Co-morbid depression is associated with poor work outcomes in persons with cardiovascular disease (CVD): A large, nationally representative survey in the Australian population

    Background: Co-morbid major depressive disorder (MDD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is associated with poor clinical and psychological outcomes. However, the full extent of the burden of, and interaction between, this co-morbidity on important vocational outcomes remains less clear, particularly at the population level. We examine the association of co-morbid MDD with work outcomes in persons with and without CVD.Methods. This study utilised cross-sectional, population-based data from the 2007 Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing (n = 8841) to compare work outcomes of individuals with diagnostically-defined MDD and CVD, MDD but not CVD, CVD but not MDD, with a reference group of "healthy" Australians. Workforce participation was defined as being in full- or part-time employment. Work functioning was measured using a WHO Disability Assessment Schedule item. Absenteeism was assessed using the \u27days out of role\u27 item.Results: Of the four groups, those with co-morbid MDD and CVD were least likely to report workforce participation (adj OR:0.4, 95% CI: 0.3-0.6). Those with MDD only (adj OR:0.8, 95% CI:0.7-0.9) and CVD only (adj OR:0.8, 95% CI: 0.6-0.9) also reported significantly reduced odds of participation. Employed individuals with co-morbid MDD and CVD were 8 times as likely to experience impairments in work functioning (adj OR:8.1, 95% CI: 3.8- 17.3) compared with the reference group. MDD was associated with a four-fold increase in impaired functioning. Further, individuals with co-morbid MDD and CVD reported greatest likelihood of workplace absenteeism (adj. OR:3.0, 95% CI: 1.4-6.6). Simultaneous exposure to MDD and CVD conferred an even greater likelihood of poorer work functioning.Conclusions: Co-morbid MDD and CVD is associated with significantly poorer work outcomes. Specifically, the effects of these conditions on work functioning are synergistic. The development of specialised treatment programs for those with co-morbid MDD and CVD is required

    Climate Change and the Patent Regime: Are Patents the Answer?

    22-26Next to nuclear annihilation, climate change poses the greatest threat to life as we know it. Climate refugees are becoming a reality and it is expected that by 2050 most of the Pacific Islands will be under water. Forward-thinking nations have made it their agenda to curb the effects of climate change and ensure the reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases.1 To effectively combat climate change, the deployment of clean energy technologies to combat the effect of carbon emissions from fossil fuelshas been the tool of choice.2 Accelerated development and deployment of these clean energy technologies is imperative. The public and private sectors must boost the creation and distribution of clean as well as environmentally sound technologies – something along the magnitude and scale of the space race during the cold war. Addressing the threats posed by climate change requires a portfolio of processes such as extensive introduction of new technologies and modification of existing technologies while also creating optimum environments. The role of intellectual property3 pertaining to clean energy technologies becomes of utmost importance. The patent regime, by its very nature, can either be seen as a hindrance or an incentive for the development of new technology.4 This means that an argument can be raised that patents would hinder climate change mitigations as clean technology is patented and licensing it would prove costly. On the other hand, patents will incentivize innovation and therefore lead to advanced technologies to combat climate change.4 The paper, refutes the former and argues that patents are essential and rebut the presumption that patents will increase prices. The paper explains, with examples, how the holy trinity of patent pools, patent databases and compulsory licensing will help make the clean energy technology competitive and accessible. The future and the applicability of fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) licensing to standardised clean energy technology are also discussed. The paper is concluded with an affirmation that patents are the answer to climate change

    Relational accommodation in negotiation: Effects of egalitarianism and gender on economic efficiency and relational capital

    Highly relational contexts can have costs as well as benefits. Researchers theorize that negotiating dyads in which both parties hold highly relational goals or views of themselves are prone to relational accommodation, a dynamic resulting in inefficient economic outcomes yet high levels of relational capital. Previous research has provided only indirect empirical support for this theory. The present study fills this gap by demonstrating the divergent effects of egalitarianism on economic efficiency and relational capital in negotiation. Dyads engaged in a simulated employment negotiation among strangers within a company that was described as either egalitarian or hierarchical. As hypothesized, dyads assigned to the egalitarian condition reached less efficient economic outcomes yet had higher relational capital than dyads assigned to the hierarchical condition. Negotiations occurring between females resulted in lower joint economic outcomes than negotiations occurring between males.
