    Permutation symmetry for the tomographic probability distribution of a system of identical particles

Starting from the action of the permutation group on the density matrix we define its action on the tomographic probability distribution.     Casimir energy and the superconducting phase transition

    We study the influence of Casimir energy on the critical field of a superconducting film, and we show that by this means it might be possible to directly measure, for the first time, the variation of Casimir energy that accompanies the superconducting transition. It is shown that this novel approach may also help clarifying the long-standing controversy on the contribution of TE zero modes to the Casimir energy in real materials.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures.     Killing two birds with one stone. Is the COVID-19 vaccination campaign an opportunity to improve adherence to cancer screening programmes? The challenge of a pilot project in a large local health authority in Rome

    The COVID-19 pandemic has affected health services worldwide. The suspension of cancer screening programs during the lockdown period, coupled with the other measures taken to limit the SARS-CoV-2 spread, contributed to the idea that cancer preventive interventions are deferrable. In this opinion paper, we present some data on cancer screening coverage in one of the largest Local Health Authorities in Italy in recent years. Within this context, we introduce the benefits of a pilot project in which we took advantage of the great attention on the COVID-19 vaccination campaign to improve screening uptake. In this project, we offered men and women eligible for cancer screening the opportunity to book appointments while waiting to be vaccinated. In addition, trained healthcare personnel were available on-site to discuss any barriers to participation with the attendees. Despite the project having only just started, preliminary results are encouraging, with positive feedback from the attendees. In conclusion, we advocate for the need to adopt a comprehensive approach when it comes to population health, and we use this project as an example to discuss how it is possible to contribute to minimizing the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic with resources already in place

    Switching of Magnetic Moments of Nanoparticles by Surface Acoustic Waves

    We report evidence of the magnetization reversal in nanoparticles by surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The experimental system consists of isolated magnetite nanoparticles dispersed on a piezoelectric substrate. Magnetic relaxation from a saturated state becomes significantly enhanced in the presence of the SAW at a constant temperature of the substrate. The dependence of the relaxation on SAW power and frequency has been investigated. The effect is explained by the effective ac magnetic field generated by the SAW in the nanoparticles.Comment: Accepted in Europhysics Letter

    Public Communication of Science: The Experience of the Rio Grande Valley Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center for Minority Aging Research

    Introduction: There are multiple models of public communication of science. Some models focus on communication within the science community, while others involve public participation. At the Rio Grande Valley AD-RCMAR, we hope to implement a public outreach program to aid in the dissemination of accurate information regarding Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Objective: The purpose of this project was to identify behavioral change models that will allow the RGV AD-RCMAR to increase awareness and engagement of brain aging, including Alzheimer’s disease, within the Rio Grande Valley. Methods: A literature review was conducted to identify models of behavioral change that will assist the center in the dissemination of science. Public communication models were narrowed down to models that aligned with the goals of the center. Results: We identified four models and found that the Precaution Adoption Process Model (PAPM) and the Tailored Health Communication (THC) model were grounded in behavioral change and would best fit the needs of the AD-RCMAR. We integrated these models by building profiles to highlight Latinx researchers and a database of neuroscience seminars that will aid in the increased awareness and recruitment of individuals on topics that are tailored to their interests. Discussion: In order to make an impact, we must consider human behavior. By integrating the PAPM and THC models, individuals will have access to topics that are tailored to what they are searching for, which will result in raised awareness. Conclusion: These models will allow us to raise engagement and awareness in the RGV and support the recruitment of participants in research. There are some factors to consider prior to implementing these models including Hispanic values and their effect on involvement and communication of scientific information. Then, we will begin to question the changes in the levels of engagement and action

    Analysis Of Parity Between Protein-based Electrophoretic Methods For The Characterization Of Oral Candida Species.

    Electrophoretic studies of multilocus-enzymes (MLEE) and whole-cell protein (SDS-PAGE) were carried out in order to evaluate the parity between different methods for the characterization of five Candida species commonly isolated from oral cavity of humans by numerical taxonomy methods. The obtained data revealed that sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis is more efficient in grouping strains in their respective species while MLEE has much limited resolution in organizing all strains in their respective species-specific clusters. MLEE technique must be regarded for surveys in which just one species of Candida is involved.95801-

    The supernova impostor PSN J09132750+7627410 and its progenitor

    We report the results of our follow-up campaign of the supernova impostor PSN J09132750+7627410, based on optical data covering 250d\sim250\,\rm{d}. From the beginning, the transient shows prominent narrow Balmer lines with P-Cygni profiles, with a blue-shifted absorption component becoming more prominent with time. Along the 3months\sim3\,\rm{months} of the spectroscopic monitoring, broad components are never detected in the hydrogen lines, suggesting that these features are produced in slowly expanding material. The transient reaches an absolute magnitude Mr=13.60±0.19magM_r=-13.60\pm0.19\,\rm{mag} at maximum, a typical luminosity for supernova impostors. Amateur astronomers provided 4years\sim4\,\rm{years} of archival observations of the host galaxy, NGC 2748. The detection of the quiescent progenitor star in archival images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope suggests it to be an 182018-20\msun white-yellow supergiant.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, supplemental material available in the source file.
