Exploring Servant Leadership in A Top-Down Environment

This study used both Greenleaf\u27s (1977) theory of servant leadership and Spears’s (1995) ten characteristics of servant leadership to explore the concept in a top-down environment. The study proposed to answer the research question: To what extent, if any, is a mayor of a metropolitan area in the Northeast region of the USA displaying at work the ten characteristics of servant leadership as defined by Spears? This study used an exploratory single-case study design and purposeful sampling techniques. The methodology consisted of in-depth, semistructured, open-ended interview with leaders from the community and employees from each of the various departments throughout City Hall. Thirteen participants who represented a diverse selection of community leaders and employees were interviewed because saturation occurred quicker than expected. Interviews, observation, and archival data were the primary sources of data collection. The key finding of this study revealed that four of the ten servant leadership characteristics as defined by Spears were dominant characteristics with regard to the mayor’s leadership style: building community, commitment to the growth of people, empathy, and stewardship. The scope of this research was limited to the mayor of a metropolitan area in the Northeast region of the USA. Future research should examine other mayors and governors in other regions of the USA using the framework of Greenleaf\u27s (1977) theory of servant leadership and as defined by Spears to explore if the themes found in this case study are found in other case situations

The subject of the research was to study the inversion in central conics, ellipses and hyperboles, to present a new approach to their understanding. The study began by searching for its roots in the mathematics timeline. Therefore, the text describes the concept of inversion in a circle and its basic properties and presents an elementary introduction to the study of a ne transformations. This interconnection between circular transformations and a ne transformations produced the singular result that was desired and provided a more geometric treatment of the inversion in central conics, instead of the analytical treatment present in the original texts

Relational Decision‐Making in the Context of Life‐Limiting Fetal Anomalies: Two Cases of Anencephaly Diagnosis

Life‐limiting fetal diagnoses such as anencephaly require families to make decisions in which no options offered will lead to the desired outcome of a healthy newborn. Although informed choice and shared decision‐making are important aspects of ethics regarding care choices, they have limitations. In this article, 2 cases of anencephaly diagnosis are presented, and a relational decision‐making model of care is proposed as an alternative for aiding pregnant people and their families in making challenging choices in the context of perinatal care.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/163826/1/jmwh13161.pdfhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/163826/2/jmwh13161_am.pd

The sickle cell disease as a Public Health problem in Brazil

Sickle cell anemia is the most prevalent hereditary disease in Brazil. However, the Brazilian literature registers no investigations into the public health aspects of the disease. This present study investigates the way of life of 80 adult patients (49 women and 31 men) with a diagnosis of sicklecell anemia, at a blood center in Brazil. The late diagnosis of the disease was one of the most significant aspects observed in this group of patients. It was also observed that the dominant problem faced by adult patients with sickle cell anemia is of an economic nature, mainly due to lack of professional opportunities. However, patients can well undertake economic activities under adequate medical supervision, according to their own limitations and potentialities. The psychoterapeutic orientation was well accepted by patients regardless of sex. It is concluded that there exists need for the establishment of community programs for early diagnosis and medical, social and psychological orientation for sickle cell anemia patients in Brazil.
