Three dimensional model calculations of the global dispersion of high speed aircraft exhaust and implications for stratospheric ozone loss
Two-dimensional (zonally averaged) photochemical models are commonly used for calculations of ozone changes due to various perturbations. These include calculating the ozone change expected as a result of change in the lower stratospheric composition due to the exhaust of a fleet of supersonic aircraft flying in the lower stratosphere. However, zonal asymmetries are anticipated to be important to this sort of calculation. The aircraft are expected to be restricted from flying over land at supersonic speed due to sonic booms, thus the pollutant source will not be zonally symmetric. There is loss of pollutant through stratosphere/troposphere exchange, but these processes are spatially and temporally inhomogeneous. Asymmetry in the pollutant distribution contributes to the uncertainty in the ozone changes calculated with two dimensional models. Pollutant distributions for integrations of at least 1 year of continuous pollutant emissions along flight corridors are calculated using a three dimensional chemistry and transport model. These distributions indicate the importance of asymmetry in the pollutant distributions to evaluation of the impact of stratospheric aircraft on ozone. The implications of such pollutant asymmetries to assessment calculations are discussed, considering both homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions
The surprising external upturn of the Blue Straggler radial distribution in M55
By combining high-resolution HST and wide-field ground based observations, in
ultraviolet and optical bands, we study the Blue Straggler Star (BSS)
population of the low density galactic globular cluster M55 (NGC 6809) over its
entire radial extent. The BSS projected radial distribution is found to be
bimodal, with a central peak, a broad minimum at intermediate radii, and an
upturn at large radii. Similar bimodal distributions have been found in other
globular clusters (M3, 47 Tucanae, NGC 6752, M5), but the external upturn in
M55 is the largest found to date. This might indicate a large fraction of
primordial binaries in the outer regions of M55, which seems somehow in
contrast with the relatively low (\sim 10%) binary fraction recently measured
in the core of this cluster.Comment: in press on Ap

ROSAT HRI X-ray Observations of the Open Globular Cluster NGC 288
A ROSAT HRI X-ray image was obtained of the open globular cluster NGC 288,
which is located near the South Galactic Pole. This is the first deep X-ray
image of this system. We detect a Low Luminosity Globular Cluster X-ray source
(LLGCX) RXJ005245.0-263449 with an X-ray luminosity of (5.5+-1.4)x10^32 ergs/s
(0.1-2.0 keV), which is located very close to the cluster center. There is
evidence for X-ray variability on a time scale of <~ 1 day. The presence of
this LLGCX in such an open cluster suggests that dense stellar systems with
high interaction rates are not needed to form LLGCXs. We also searched for
diffuse X-ray emission from NGC 288. Upper limits on the X-ray luminosities are
L_X^h < 9.5x10^32 ergs/s (0.52-2.02 keV) and L_X^s < 9.3x10^32 ergs/s
(0.11-0.41 keV). These imply upper limits to the diffuse X-ray to optical light
ratios in NGC 288 which are lower than the values observed for X-ray faint
early-type galaxies. This indicates that the soft X-ray emission in these
galaxies is due either to a component which is not present in globular clusters
(e.g., interstellar gas, or a stellar component which is not found in low
metallicity Population II systems), or to a relatively small number of bright
Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs).Comment: The Astrophysical Journal in press. Minor revisions to improve

Characterizing landscape-scale erosion using 10Be in detrital fluvial sediment: Slope-based sampling strategy detects the effect of widespread dams
Concentrations of in situ 10Be measured in detrital fluvial sediment are frequently used to estimate long-term erosion rates of drainage basins. In many regions, basin-averaged erosion rates are positively correlated with basin average slope. The slope dependence of erosion allows model-based erosion rate estimation for unsampled basins and basins where human disturbance may have biased cosmogenic nuclide concentrations in sediment. Using samples collected from southeastern North America, we demonstrate an approach that explicitly considers the relationship between average basin slope and erosion rate. Because dams and reservoirs are ubiquitous on larger channels in the field area, we selected 36 undammed headwater subbasins (average area 10.6 km2) from which we collected river sand samples and measured 10Be concentrations. We used these data to train a predictive model that relates average basin slope and 10Be-inferred erosion rate. Applying our model to 28 basins in the same region previously studied with 10Be, we find that the model successfully predicts erosion rates for basins of different sizes if they are undammed or if samples were collected \u3e25 km downstream of dams. For samples collected closer to dams, measured erosion rates exceed modeled erosion rates for two-thirds of the samples. In three of four cases where paired samples were collected upstream of reservoirs and downstream of the impounding dam, 10Be concentrations were lower downstream. This finding has implications for detrital cosmogenic studies, whether or not samples were collected directly downstream of dams, because dams obstruct most major rivers around the world, effectively trapping sediment that originated upstream
The First Empirical Mass Loss Law for Population II Giants
Using the Spitzer IRAC camera we have obtained mid-IR photometry of the red
giant branch stars in the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tuc. About 100 stars
show an excess of mid-infrared light above that expected from their
photospheric emission. This is plausibly due to dust formation in mass flowing
from these stars. This mass loss extends down to the level of the horizontal
branch and increases with luminosity. The mass loss is episodic, occurring in
only a fraction of stars at a given luminosity. Using a simple model and our
observations we derive mass loss rates for these stars. Finally, we obtain the
first empirical mass loss formula calibrated with observations of Population II
stars. The dependence on luminosity of our mass loss rate is considerably
shallower than the widely used Reimers Law. The results presented here are the
first from our Spitzer survey of a carefully chosen sample of 17 Galactic
Globular Clusters, spanning the entire metallicity range from about one
hundredth up to almost solar
