A comparison among different Hill-type contraction dynamics formulations for muscle force estimation
Muscle is a type of tissue able to contract and, thus, shorten, producing a pulling force able to generate movement. The analysis of its activity is essential to understand how the force is generated to perform a movement and how that force can be estimated from direct or indirect measurements. Hill-type muscle model is one of the most used models to describe the mechanism of force production. It is composed by different elements that describe the behaviour of the muscle (contractile, series elastic and parallel elastic element) and tendon. In this work we analyze the differences between different formulations found in the literature for these elements. To evaluate the differences, a flexo-extension movement of the arm was performed, using as input to the different models the surface electromyography signal recorded and the muscle-tendon lengths and contraction velocities obtained by means of inverse dynamic analysis. The results show that the force predicted by the different models is similar and the main differences in muscle force prediction were observed at full-flexion. The results are expected to contribute in the selection of the different formulations of Hill-type muscle model to solve a specific problem.• Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad y Fondos FEDER. Estimation of muscular forces from SSA smoothed sEMG signals calibrated by inverse dynamics-based physiological static optimization
The estimation of muscular forces is useful in several areas such as biomedical or rehabilitation engineering. As muscular forces cannot be measured in vivo non-invasively they must be estimated by using indirect measurements such as surface electromyography (sEMG) signals or by means of inverse dynamic (ID) analyses. This paper proposes an approach to estimate muscular forces based on both of them. The main idea is to tune a gain matrix so as to compute muscular forces from sEMG signals. To do so, a curve fitting process based on least-squares is carried out. The input is the sEMG signal filtered using singular spectrum analysis technique. The output corresponds to the muscular force estimated by the ID analysis of the recorded task, a dumbbell weightlifting. Once the model parameters are tuned, it is possible to obtain an estimation of muscular forces based on sEMG signal. This procedure might be used to predict muscular forces in vivo outside the space limitations of the gait analysis laboratory.Postprint (published version
An Economic, Energy, and Environmental Analysis of PV/Micro-CHP Hybrid Systems: A Case Study of a Tertiary Building
Our present standard of living depends strongly on energy sources, with buildings being
a primary focus when it comes to reducing energy consumption due to their large contribution,
especially in tertiary buildings. The goal of the present study is to evaluate the performance
of two different designs of hybrid systems, composed of natural gas engines and photovoltaic
panels. This will be done through simulations in TRNSYS, considering a representative office
building with various schedules of operation (8, 12, and 24 h), as well as different climates in
Spain. The main contributions of this paper are the evaluations of primary energy-consumption,
emissions, and economic analyses for each scenario. In addition, a sensitivity analysis is carried out
to observe the influence of energy prices, as well as that of the costs of the micro-CHP engines and
PV modules. The results show that the scenario with the conventional system and PV modules is
the most profitable one currently. However, if electricity prices are increased in the future or natural
gas prices are reduced, the scenario with micro-CHP engines and PV modules will become the most
profitable option. Energy service engineers, regulators, and manufacturers are the most interested in
these results
Design, control and evaluation of a low-cost active orthosis for the gait of spinal cord injured subjects
Robotic gait training after spinal cord injury is of high priority to maximize independence and improve the living conditions of the patients. Current rehabilitation robots are expensive and heavy, and are generally found only in the clinical environment. To overcome these issues, we present the design of a low-cost, low-weight and personalized robotic orthosis for incomplete spinal cord injured subjects. The paper also presents a preliminary experimental evaluation of the assistive device on one subject with spinal cord injury that can control hip flexion to a certain extent, but lacks control of knee and ankle muscles. Results show that gait velocity, stride length and cadence
of walking increased (24,11%, 7,41% and 15,56%, respectively) when wearing active orthoses compared to the case when the subject used the usual passive orthoses.Postprint (published version

Everybody knows about New York, Manhattan Island, Hudson River
and the largest stock market in the world: Wall Street. But, who settled down
first in this city? I mean to offer an approach to the colonization of Manhattan
area by the Dutch. I’d also like to talk in depth about the influence of Dutch
on American English. Thus, I’m going to build a lexical corpus of Dutch loanwords
and loan-translations in English. Subsequently, they will be grouped
into semantic fields so that they can be analyzed. Finally, conclusions will be
drawn about the most influential semantic field or fields on American English
Compound-word building from the Dutch name Jan
To begin with, I'll focus on the Dutch name Jan. Secondly, I'll analyze which Dutch compound words include the name Jan, as well as the semantic fields they can be grouped into. Then, I'll talk about the influence of this name into German and English. As regards the latter, the word Yankee will be explained in depth. I mean to draw conclusions about the sort of word it becomes part of and the situations that it's used in. Also, the degree of influence over the aforementioned languages will be discussed
German loan words in Dutch in the 21st century. Recent incorporations to Dikke Van Dale
By means of this research, I mean to determine the recent influence of German (100 million native speakers) on Dutch (23 million speakers as their mother tongue). A corpus of German loanwords will be the core to try and clarify the most influential semantic fields on Dutch nowadays. They will be dealt with within the historical context which has originated the appearance of these particular words. Hence, I‟ll be able to determine what type of vocabulary has been influential and which has been the degree of contact between both languages during the first thirteen years of 21st century
