A Krylov-Schur solution of the eigenvalue problem for the neutron diffusion equation discretized with the Raviart-Thomas method
[EN] Mixed-dual formulations of the finite element method were successfully applied to the neutron diffusion equation, such as the RaviartÂżThomas method in Cartesian geometry and the RaviartÂżThomasÂżSchneider in hexagonal geometry. Both methods obtain system matrices which are suitable for solving the eigenvalue problem with the preconditioned power method. This method is very fast and optimized, but only for the calculation of the fundamental mode. However, the determination of non-fundamental modes is important for modal analysis, instabilities, and fluctuations of nuclear reactors. So, effective and fast methods are required for solving eigenvalue problems. The most effective methods are those based on Krylov subspaces projection combined with restart, such as KrylovÂżSchur. Endangered right whales enhance primary productivity in the bay of fundy

Marine mammals have recently been documented as important facilitators of rapid and efficient nutrient recycling in coastal and offshore waters. Whales enhance phytoplankton nutrition by releasing fecal plumes near the surface after feeding and by migrating from highly productive, high-latitude feeding areas to low-latitude nutrient-poor calving areas. In this study, we measured NH4 + and PO4 3- release rates from the feces of North Atlantic right whales (Eubalaena glacialis), a highly endangered baleen whale. Samples for this species were primarily collected by locating aggregations of whales in surface- Active groups (SAGs), which typically consist of a central female surrounded by males competing for sexual activity. When freshly collected feces were incubated in seawater, high initial rates of N release were generally observed, which decreased to near zero within 24 hours of sampling, a pattern that is consistent with the active role of gut microflora on fecal particles. We estimate that at least 10% of particulate N in whale feces becomes available as NH4 + within 24 hours of defecation. Phosphorous was also abundant in fecal samples: Initial release rates of PO4 3- were higher than for NH4 +, yielding low N/P nutrient ratios over the course of our experiments. The rate of PO4 3- release was thus more than sufficient to preclude the possibility that nitrogenous nutrients supplied by whales would lead to phytoplankton production limited by P availability. Phytoplankton growth experiments indicated that NH4 + released from whale feces enhance productivity, as would be expected, with no evidence that fecal metabolites suppress growth. Although North Atlantic right whales are currently rare (approximately 450 individuals), they once numbered about 14,000 and likely played a substantial role in recycling nutrients in areas where they gathered to feed and mate. Even though the NH4 + released from fresh whale fecal material is a small fraction of total whale fecal nitrogen, and recognizing the fact that the additional nitrogen released in whale urine would be difficult to measure in a field study, the results of this study support the idea that the distinctive isotopic signature of the released NH4 + could be used to provide a conservative estimate of the contribution of the whale pump to primary productivity in coastal regions where whales congregate
Inferring introduction routes of invasive species using approximate Bayesian computation on microsatellite data
Determining the routes of introduction provides not only information about the history of an invasion process, but also information about the origin and construction of the genetic composition of the invading population. It remains difficult, however, to infer introduction routes from molecular data because of a lack of appropriate methods. We evaluate here the use of an approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) method for estimating the probabilities of introduction routes of invasive populations based on microsatellite data. We considered the crucial case of a single source population from which two invasive populations originated either serially from a single introduction event or from two independent introduction events. Using simulated datasets, we found that the method gave correct inferences and was robust to many erroneous beliefs. The method was also more efficient than traditional methods based on raw values of statistics such as assignment likelihood or pairwise F(ST). We illustrate some of the features of our ABC method, using real microsatellite datasets obtained for invasive populations of the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera. Secondary contact and admixture between independently invading populations of the Western corn rootworm, diabrotica virgifera virgifera in Europe
The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is one of the most destructive pests of corn in North America and is currently invading Europe. The two major invasive outbreaks of rootworm in Europe have occurred, in North-West Italy and in Central and South-Eastern Europe. These two outbreaks originated from independent introductions from North America. Secondary contact probably occurred in North Italy between these two outbreaks, in 2008. We used 13 microsatellite markers to conduct a population genetics study, to demonstrate that this geographic contact resulted in a zone of admixture in the Italian region of Veneto. We show that i) genetic variation is greater in the contact zone than in the parental outbreaks; ii) several signs of admixture were detected in some Venetian samples, in a Bayesian analysis of the population structure and in an approximate Bayesian computation analysis of historical scenarios and, finally, iii) allelic frequency clines were observed at microsatellite loci. The contact between the invasive outbreaks in North-West Italy and Central and South-Eastern Europe resulted in a zone of admixture, with particular characteristics. The evolutionary implications of the existence of a zone of admixture in Northern Italy and their possible impact on the invasion success of the western corn rootworm are discussed
On dynamical probabilities, or: how to learn to shoot straight

It is by now quite standard to define the formal semantics of (various) probabilistic languages, for example, in terms of Discrete Time Markov Chains (DTMCs). In most cases however the probabilities involved are represented by constants, i.e. one deals with static probabilities. In this paper we investigate a semantical framework which allows for changing, i.e. dynamic probabilities which is still based on time-homogenous DTMCs, i.e. the transition matrix representing the semantics of a program does not change over time
Monte Carlo simulation of expected outcomes with the AcrySofÂź toric intraocular lens
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To use a Monte Carlo simulation to predict postoperative results with the AcrySof<sup>Âź </sup>Toric lens, evaluating the likelihood of over- or under-correction using various toric lens selection criteria.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Keratometric data were obtained from a large patient population with preoperative corneal astigmatism <= 2.50D (2,000 eyes). The probability distributions for toric marking accuracy, surgically induced astigmatism and lens rotation were estimated using available data. Anticipated residual astigmatism was calculated using a Monte Carlo simulation under two different lens selection scenarios.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>This simulation demonstrated that random errors in alignment, surgically induced astigmatism and lens rotation slightly reduced the overall effect of the toric lens. Residual astigmatism was statistically significantly higher under the simulation of surgery relative to an exact calculation (p < 0.05). The simulation also demonstrated that more aggressive lens selection criteria could produce clinically significant reductions in residual astigmatism in a high percentage of patients.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Monte Carlo simulation suggests that surgical variability and lens orientation/rotation variability may combine to produce small reductions in the correction achieved with the AcrySof<sup>Âź </sup>Toric<sup>Âź </sup>IOL. Adopting more aggressive lens selection criteria may yield significantly lower residual astigmatism values for many patients, with negligible overcorrections. Surgeons are encouraged to evaluate their AcrySof<sup>Âź </sup>Toric<sup>Âź </sup>outcomes to determine if they should modify their individual lens selection criteria, or their default surgically induced astigmatism value, to benefit their patients.</p
Developmental changes in the role of different metalinguistic awareness skills in Chinese reading acquisition from preschool to third grade

use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.The present study investigated the relationship between Chinese reading skills and metalinguistic awareness skills such as phonological, morphological, and orthographic awareness for 101 Preschool, 94 Grade-1, 98 Grade-2, and 98 Grade-3 children from two primary schools in Mainland China. The aim of the study was to examine how each of these metalinguistic awareness skills would exert their influence on the success of reading in Chinese with age. The results showed that all three metalinguistic awareness skills significantly predicted reading success. It further revealed that orthographic awareness played a dominant role in the early stages of reading acquisition, and its influence decreased with age, while the opposite was true for the contribution of morphological awareness. The results were in stark contrast with studies in English, where phonological awareness is typically shown as the single most potent metalinguistic awareness factor in literacy acquisition. Human kallikrein 6: a new potential serum biomarker for uterine serous papillary cancer.
PURPOSE: The discovery of novel biomarkers might greatly contribute to improve clinical management and outcomes in uterine serous papillary carcinoma (USPC), a highly aggressive variant of endometrial cancer. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Human kallikrein 6 (hK6) gene expression levels were evaluated in 29 snap-frozen endometrial biopsies, including 13 USPC, 13 endometrioid carcinomas, and 3 normal endometrial cells by real-time PCR. Secretion of hK6 protein by 14 tumor cultures, including 3 USPC, 3 endometrioid carcinoma, 5 ovarian serous papillary carcinoma, and 3 cervical cancers, was measured using a sensitive ELISA. Finally, hK6 concentration in 79 serum and plasma samples from 22 healthy women, 20 women with benign diseases, 20 women with endometrioid carcinoma, and 17 USPC patients was studied. RESULTS: hK6 gene expression levels were significantly higher in USPC when compared with endometrioid carcinoma (mean copy number by real-time PCR, 1,927 versus 239, USPC versus endometrioid carcinoma; P < 0.01). In vitro hK6 secretion was detected in all primary USPC cell lines tested (mean, 11.5 microg/L) and the secretion levels were similar to those found in primary ovarian serous papillary carcinoma cultures (mean, 9.6 microg/L). In contrast, no hK6 secretion was detectable in primary endometrioid carcinoma and cervical cancer cultures. hK6 serum and plasma concentrations (mean +/- SE) among normal healthy females (2.7 +/- 0.2 microg/L), patients with benign diseases (2.4 +/- 0.2 microg/L), and patients with endometrioid carcinoma (2.6 +/- 0.2 microg/L) were not significantly different. In contrast, serum and plasma hK6 values in USPC patients (6.1 +/- 1.1) were significantly higher than those in the noncancer group (P = 0.006), benign group (P = 0.003), and endometrioid carcinoma patients (P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: hK6 is highly expressed in USPC and is released in the plasma and serum of USPC patients. hK6 may represent a novel biomarker for USPC for monitoring early disease recurrence and response to therapy
Induction of tumor-specific cytotoxicity in tumor infiltrating lymphocytes by HPV16 and HPV18 E7-pulsed autologous dendritic cells in patients with cancer of the uterine cervix.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential of autologous dendritic cells (DC) pulsed with HPV16 and HPV18 E7 oncoprotein in restoring tumor-specific cytotoxicity in populations of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) for adoptive immunotherapy of cervical cancer patients. METHODS: Full-length E7-pulsed DC-stimulated CD8(+) T cells derived from peripheral blood (PBL) and from tumor tissues (TIL) were tested and compared for their ability to induce a HLA class-I-restricted cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) response against autologous tumor cells. In addition, in order to correlate cytotoxic activity by CTL with a particular lymphoid subset, analysis of surface antigens and intracellular CD3 zeta chain and two-color flow cytometric analysis of intracellular cytokine expression (IFN-gamma vs IL-4) at the single cell level were performed. RESULTS: DC stimulation induced powerful cytotoxicity against autologous tumor target cells by TIL-derived CD8(+) T cells from all three cervical cancer patients, while autologous Epstein-Barr virus-transformed lymphoblastoid cell lines were not lysed. Killing of autologous tumor cells was higher by CD8(+) T cells from TIL compared to PBL (P > 0.01) and was more strongly inhibited by anti-HLA class I MAb (P > 0.05). Phenotypically, all CTL populations were CD3(+)/CD8(+), with higher levels of CD56 expression by TIL-derived CTL. Finally, although a marked Type 1 cytokine bias (i.e., IFN-gamma(high)/IL-4(low)) was observable in both PBL- and TIL-derived DC-stimulated CD8(+) T cell populations, TIL-derived CD8(+) T cells showed a higher percentage of IFN-gamma-positive cells compared to PBL. CONCLUSIONS: Full-length E7-pulsed DC can consistently restore strong CD8(+) CTL responses against autologous HPV16- and HPV18-infected cervical cancer cells. DC-stimulated TIL may represent a superior source of tumor-specific CTL compared to PBL for adoptive T cell immunotherapy of patients harboring metastatic or recurrent cervical cancer refractory to standard treatment modalities
