    Determinación de la prevalencia de parásitos gastrointestinales en perros residentes en el albergue municipal de mascotas, zona 21, de la ciudad de Guatemala

    Se recolectaron muestras de heces directamente del ano de 39 perros residentes. Dichas muestras fueron procesadas con el método de flotación con solución sobresaturada de azúcar y tamizaje fecal en el laboratorio de parasitología de la FMVZ - USAC. Se comprobó la presencia de Ancylostoma caninum y Toxocara canis. De los 39 caninos muestreados, el 92X 100 resultó negativo a parásitos siendo el resto del porcentaje casos positivos. Se obtuvo como prevalencia el 8X 100 para A. caninum y 3X 100 para Toxocara canis. Además, no se detectó la presencia de proglótidos de Dipylidium caninum. Se determinó el grado de infestación de tipo leve para Ancylostoma caninum y Toxocara canis, presentando una cruz el 100X 100 de las muestras positivas para ambos parásitos. El diseño del estudio fue descriptivo de corte transversal, en el cual se realizó la prueba de Chi cuadrado para establecer asociación entre el sexo de los perros con A. caninum, resultando que no existe ninguna asociación. Con base en los resultados, no se realizó la prueba de Chi cuadrado debido a la ausencia de casos positivos de endoparásitos en cachorros, así como, en hembras para Toxocara canis. Tampoco se pudo establecer asociación entre la edad de los perros y prevalencia A. caninum, ni se estableció asociación entre la edad y sexo de los perros y la prevalencia de T. canis, ya que las variables no se pueden analizar porque provocarían un sesgo en dichos resultados

    [Resumen] Este proyecto surge de la necesidad de cuestionar la forma como nos han educado a observar el cuerpo y el mundo, desde la concepción de la educación física. Una revisión minuciosa permitirá estudiar la formación y transformación de los cuerpos en la postmodernidad. Es así como la educación física, inicialmente, conserva la tradición dualista de corte platónico-cartesiano, en la cual la concepción del ser humano se asume desde dos dimensiones: espíritu-cuerpo o cuerpo-alma, separación que pone de manifiesto que el ser humano se constituye en dos sustancias que se relacionan, pero que no se combinan (Descartes): por un lado el ser corpóreo y por otro el ser inteligible. Esta separación concibe la instrumentalización del cuerpo, o más bien, ubica el cuerpo como objeto o como máquina. Sin embargo, a través del tiempo se han establecido nuevos paradigmas que han transformado dicha concepción en la educación física, así como su relación con las disciplinas que la complementan. En este sentido, el proyecto busca integrar tales significaciones y superar las condiciones exclusivamente biológicas del cuerpo, que ha abandonado el estudio del cuerpo-propio para centrarse únicamente el estudio del cuerpo-objeto, con lo que se busca hacer hincapié en la perspectiva del propio cuerpo en cuanto experimentación a través de la conciencia corporal

    Dialogic science-policy networks for water security governance in the arid Americas

    Addressing wicked problems challenging water security requires participation from multiple stakeholders, often with conflicting visions, complicating the attainment of water-security goals and heightening the need for integrative and effective science-policy interfaces. Sustained multi-stakeholder dialogues within science-policy networks can improve adaptive governance and water system resilience. This paper describes what we define as “dialogic science-policy networks,” or interactions -- both in structural and procedural terms -- between scientists and policy-makers that are: 1) interdisciplinary, 2) international (here, inter-American), 3) cross-sectoral, 4) open, 5) continual and iterative in the long-term, and 6) flexible. By fostering these types of interactions, dialogic networks achieve what we call the 4-I criteria for effective science-policy dialogues: inclusivity, involvement, interaction, and influence. Here we present several water-security research and action projects where some of these attributes may be present. Among these, a more comprehensive form of a dialogic network was intentionally created via AQUASEC, a virtual center and network initially fostered by a series of grants from the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research. Subsequently, AQUASEC has significantly expanded to other regions through direct linkages and additional program support for the International Water Security Network, supported by Lloyd's Register Foundation and other sources. This paper highlights major scientific and policy achievements of a notable suite of science-policy networks, shared practices, methods, and knowledge integrating science and policy, as well as the main barriers overcome in network development. An important gap that remains for future research is the assessment and evaluation of dialogic science-policy networks' long-term outcomes.Fil: Lutz Ley, America N..     Power law scaling of lateral deformations with universal Poissons index for randomly folded thin sheets

    We study the lateral deformations of randomly folded elastoplastic and predominantly plastic thin sheets under the uniaxial and radial compressions. We found that the lateral deformations of cylinders folded from elastoplastic sheets of paper obey a power law behavior with the universal Poissons index nu = 0.17 pm 0.01, which does not depend neither the paper kind and sheet sizes, nor the folding confinement ratio. In contrast to this, the lateral deformations of randomly folded predominantly plastic aluminum foils display the linear dependence on the axial compression with the universal Poissons ratio nu_e = 0.33 pm 0.01. This difference is consistent with the difference in fractal topology of randomly folded elastoplastic and predominantly plastic sheets, which is found to belong to different universality classes.     El Objetivo General del estudio es identificar, caracterizar, clasificar y analizar la demanda y la oferta de servicios de apoyo a las empresas de los diferentes eslabones de las cadenas de lácteos, en los municipios de Camoapa, Matiguás y Santo Tomás para establecer las brechas existentes y trazar los lineamientos necesarios para el diseño de un programa de fortalecimiento y desarrollo de capacidades de los prestadores de Servicios de Desarrollo Empresarial (SDE). Estos municipios se consideraron representativos de los Departamentos de Boaco, Matagalpa y Chontales y los municipios ganaderos del Norte de la RAAS y del Sur de la RAAN, los que tienen más del 60 % de la población de ganado bovino de Nicaragua, y una producción conjunta de leche de 179.2 millones de galones (2005), o sea el 62 % del total producido en el país y 380,330 quintales de queso equivalente al 87 % de la producción total del país

    Do ecosystem insecurity and social vulnerability lead to failure of water security?

    Achieving water security for humans and ecosystems is a pervasive challenge globally. Extensive areas of the Americas are at significant risk of water insecurity, resulting from global-change processes coupled with regional and local impacts. Drought, flooding, and water quality challenges pose significant threats, while at the same time, rapid urban expansion, competing water demands, river modifications, and expanding global markets for water-intensive agricultural products drive water insecurity. This paper takes a social-ecological systems perspective, aiming to identify examples and pathways towards resilient ecosystems and social development. It draws on lessons from two science-policy network projects, one focusing on water scarcity in arid and semi-arid regions of Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Peru, Mexico and the United States; and the second addressing river and lake basins as sentinels of climate variability and human effects on water quantity and quality in Canada, the United States, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay and Chile. Together, these ?complementary contrasts? provide an analytical basis to empirically examine stakeholder engagement, knowledge co-production and science-policy interaction supporting decision-making to achieve water security. The paper identifies four tenets for decision-making based on water-security-focused global-change science in the Americas: 1) Decision makers should focus on protecting ecosystems because water security (along with food and energy security) depend on them; 2) Water-use and allocation decisions ought to be made considering future environmental and societal vulnerabilities, especially climate projections; 3) Holistic approaches (at basin or other appropriate levels) are best suited to ensure social-ecological system resilience and reduce vulnerability; and 4) It is essential to support local/traditional livelihoods, and underserved populations to achieve equitable water security and ecosystem resilience.Fil: Scott, Christopher A..     mtDNA Haplogroup A Enhances the Effect of Obesity on the Risk of Knee OA in a Mexican Population

    [Abstract] To evaluate the influence of mitochondrial DNA haplogroups on the risk of knee OA in terms of their interaction with obesity, in a population from Mexico. Samples were obtained from (n = 353) knee OA patients (KL grade ≥ I) and (n = 364) healthy controls (KL grade = 0) from Mexico city and Torreon (Mexico). Both Caucasian and Amerindian mtDNA haplogroups were assigned by single base extension assay. A set of clinical and demographic variables, including obesity status, were considered to perform appropriate statistical approaches, including chi-square contingency tables, regression models and interaction analyses. To ensure the robustness of the predictive model, a statistical cross-validation strategy of B = 1000 iterations was used. All the analyses were performed using boot, GmAMisc and epiR package from R software v4.0.2 and SPSS software v24. The frequency distribution of the mtDNA haplogroups between OA patients and healthy controls for obese and non-obese groups showed the haplogroup A as significantly over-represented in knee OA patients within the obese group (OR 2.23; 95% CI 1.22-4.05; p-value = 0.008). The subsequent logistic regression analysis, including as covariate the interaction between obesity and mtDNA haplogroup A, supported the significant association of this interaction (OR 2.57; 95% CI 1.24-5.32; p-value = 0.011). The statistical cross-validation strategy confirmed the robustness of the regression model.
