    How Does the Students’ Readability in Mastering English Material?

    In English class, the teachers/lecturers have to take a big chance in managing their students well. Managing the class is not an easy thing to do. The lecturers have to use appropriate techniques to gain the students attention. In university level, the students are the central in English teaching and learning process. They have many different characteristics and readability. From this atmosphere, the lecturer has to be ready for those differences. In selecting the English materials, the lecturer should consider based on the students’ needs. The paper aims at investigating the students’ readability in English class in mastering English material. It focuses on Intermediate Grammar Class. It describes the students who like watching English movies. The material focuses on simple past tense. The method of this study is descriptive qualitative research. This result shows that the mean score from the students who like watching English movies is 77.83. From the mean score, the mastery of simple past tense of the students who like watching English movies can be categorized as good. It can be used as the contribution to English teaching and learning process and reference for further researchers in doing the similar research.

The writer investigates their performance in teaching to the real students. The use of teaching video can be used as a reflective teaching to improve student teachers’ performance in English class

    Dalam praktik pembelajaran, seorang guru Bahasa Inggris sangat dituntut untuk menjadi seorang tenaga professional, berkompeten dan mempunyai kredibilitas tinggi, sehingga mampu menjalankan perannya secara tepat. Untuk itu dibutuhkan beberapa elemen yang dapat membentuk seseorang sehingga bisa disebut guru yang berkompeten. Salah satu dari elemen tersebut adalah kecerdasan emosional. Kecerdasan emosional saat ini diyakini sebagai elemen penting yang harus dimiliki oleh seorang guru. Hal ini member sebuah ide bahwa pengetahuan tentang Bahasa Inggris saja bukan satu-satunya factor penting untuk menjadi seorang guru Bahasa Inggris yang sukses. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah: 1). Untuk mengetahui apakah kecerdasan emosional guru bahasa Inggris dapat mempengaruhi hasil akhir pembelajaran siswa. 2). Untuk mengetahui sejauh mana kecerdasan emosional guru bahasa Inggris dapat mempengaruhi hasil akhir pembelajaran siswa. Penelitian ini termasuk jenis penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Metode deskriptif kualitatif cenderung menggunakan analisa induktif, dimana proses penelitian dan pemberian makna terhadap data dan informasi lebih ditonjolkan, dengan cirri utama metode ini adalah bentuk narasi yang bersifat kreatif dan mendalam serta naturalistik. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mendapatkan pemahaman yang substantive terhadap permasalahan guru Bahasa Inggris terhadap kecerdasan emosional. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah empat guru Bahasa Inggris SMP 3 Jekulo Kudus. Hasil penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa kecerdasan emosional guru bahasa Inggris dapat mempengaruhi hasil akhir pembelajaran. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari hasil penyebaran angket kepada guru Bahasa Inggris SMP 3 Jekulo Kudus terhadap hasil akhir pembelajaran siswa. Guru yang nilai kecerdasan emosionalnya tinggi juga mempunyai nilai rata-rata hasil akhir pembelajaran siswa yang tinggi. Sebaliknya, guru yang nilai kecerdasan emosionalnya rendah mempunyai nilai rata-rata hasil akhir pembelajaran siswa yang rendah pula. Sebagai tambahan guru yang mempunyai nilai kecerdasan emosional tinggi lebih mudah dalam menyampaikan materi terhadap muridnya dan lebih dapat mengontrol kelas dengan baik sehingga menimbulkan ketertarikan terhadap pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Sedangkan guru yang mempunyai nilai kecerdasan emosional rendah merasa kesulitan dalam mengontrol kelas dan juga emosinya sehingga menyebabkan kurangnya motivasi siswa terhadap pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, peneliti memberikan saran sebagai berikut.1) Guru Bahasa Inggris sebaiknya memperhatikan kecerdasan emosional karena sangat berguna di kelas dan juga di masyarakat. 2) Setiap siswa mempunyai karakter dan kebutuhan yang berbeda, jadi mereka disarankan untuk memiliki kecerdasan emosional agar mampu menjalankan perannya di sekolah dan juga lingkungan sekitar. 3) Untuk peneliti berikutnya disarankan melakukan penelitian yang sejenis dengan korelasi yang berbeda misalnya antara kecerdasan emosional dan motivasi siswa

    Mahasiswa jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dituntut untuk dapat menguasai empat kemampuan dalam Bahasa Inggris. Berbicara merupakan salah satu kemampuan penting yang harus dimiliki oleh mahasiswa. Salah satu materi mata kuliah speaking adalah public speaking. Penelitian ini memfokuskan pada kemampuan berbicara di depan umum. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah: 1) Untuk mengetahui kegiatan yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa yang berhubungan dengan berbicara di depan umum. 2) Untuk mengetahui sejauh mana mahasiswa dapat berbicara di depan umum. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan terhadap mahasiswa semester 5 program studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Muria Kudus. Metode deskriptif kualitatif merupakan metode yang dipilih peneliti untuk menganalisis public speaking yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa aktifitas mahasiswa terhadap public speaking diantaranya tour guide, news reporter, host of program, sales promoter, and commentator. Kegiatan yang paling dominan adalah tour guide. Disamping nilai rata-rata mahasiswa adalah 78,9 dan dapat dikategorikan baik/good. Penelitian ini diharapkan memiliki luaran sebagai referensi bahwa public speaking merupakan salah satu cara yang dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris. Disamping itu public speaking dapat melatih kepercayaan diri sehingga memotivasi mahasiswa untuk selalu menggunakan bahasa Inggris

By that statement education need to adapt the technology by using it to make the student and teacher learning classes more effective. By that issue this research paper will be explaining what is the overall effect of the games and learning application across studies and what are the benefit from conducting their research. The findings from this research shown across different games and it can increase the student’s overall vocabulary score and activity in the classes in comparison when they are not using game to teach vocabulary. This article also provides information about the benefit of games to the student’s vocabulary skill.     The use of online modes is becoming a tremendous activity in teaching and learning English nowadays, however social networking can also be an effective tool. It is not only easy to use but also helps encourage an autonomous learning within a social environment for students. Facebook is currently the most popular platform for online social networking among university students. It can create motivation and increase students’ social relationships outside of the classroom. One of the interesting activities many young people do is commenting each other on their friends’ statuses and pictures. This paper discusses the use of Facebook as a useful online environment that could support, enhance or strengthen their motivation in learning English language. The data are collected from a English Education Department students, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Muria Kudus University using a questionnaire method. After presenting a descriptive analysis of the data, I conclude that students believe Facebook could be utitized as an alternative media in learning English

    ASSESSING THE SCOPE FOR COHESION EXERCISES AT STUDENTS’ LEVEL IN THE TEST OF CLASSROOM DISCOURSE

    Nowadays, discourse is very popular among students and teachers/lecturers. It can be seen that it has been one of the subjects in English Department. Discourse analysis examines how stretches of language, considered in their full textual, social, and psychological context, become meaningful and unified for their users. Cohesion has then become an important case to discuss due to the fact that it is part of discourse analysis. It has often been neglected in language teaching, where sentences have been created, manipulated, and assessed in isolation. It has been assumed that student difficulties arise primarily from lack of vocabulary or the complexity of grammatical structure at sentence level, whereas difficulties can as easily arise from problems with cohesion: finding the referent for a pronoun, for example, or recovering a phrase or clause lost through ellipsis. The results of this neglect are familiar to students at all levels, for they affect both production and processing. So far in many cases, teachers/lecturers have still found their students’ writing are not in a good form due to its lacking cohesiveness. In fact, cohesiveness is one the properties by which an essay or article or any other kinds of writing is considered to by the good one. Therefore, the study of cohesion is necessary to be intensively done, especially by lecturers. This paper explores the scope of cohesion in the result of students’ analysis test in the classroom discourse.     Relationship between Gender, Subject Preference and Learning Styles

    Understanding the learning styles of the students is very crucial in implementing student-centered learning (SCL). The objectives of this research are to describe: 1) the general learning styles profile of the students of English Education Department Universitas Muria Kudus; 2) the dependency relationship between learning styles dimensions and gender, and 3) the dependency relationship between subject preference and learning styles dimensions. This research uses 208 students from different semesters as the samples, while the instrument is the Indonesian translation of Solomon-Felder Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire. The result of the analysis reveals that: 1) the general learning style profile of the students is balanced; 2) at ? .05, there is no significant relationship between the probability of the students of having certain learning styles dimensions and gender; 3) at ? .05, the subject preference of the students who are SensingIntuitive and Visual Verbal depends on their learning styles dimensions, while that of those who are Active Reflective and Sequential Global does not
