Density-dependent interactions and structure of charged colloidal dispersions in the weak screening regime
We determine the structure of charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions at low
ionic strength over an extended range of particle volume fractions using a
combination of light and small angle neutron scattering experiments. The
variation of the structure factor with concentration is analyzed within a
one-component model of a colloidal suspension. We show that the observed
structural behavior corresponds to a non-monotonic density dependence of the
colloid effective charge and the mean interparticle interaction energy. Our
findings are corroborated by similar observations from primitive model computer
simulations of salt-free colloidal suspensions.Comment: Revised version, accepted to Phys. Rev. Let
Proper motions in the VVV Survey: Results for more than 15 million stars across NGC 6544
Context: In the last six years, the VVV survey mapped 562 sq. deg. across the
bulge and southern disk of the Galaxy. However, a detailed study of these
regions, which includes globular clusters (GCs) and thousands of open
clusters is by no means an easy challenge. High differential reddening and
severe crowding along the line of sight makes highly hamper to reliably
distinguish stars belonging to different populations and/or systems. Aims: The
aim of this study is to separate stars that likely belong to the Galactic GC
NGC 6544 from its surrounding field by means of proper motion (PM) techniques.
Methods: This work was based upon a new astrometric reduction method optimized
for images of the VVV survey. Results: Photometry over the six years baseline
of the survey allowed us to obtain a mean precision of mas/yr, in
each PM coordinate, for stars with Ks < 15 mag. In the area studied here,
cluster stars separate very well from field stars, down to the main sequence
turnoff and below, allowing us to derive for the first time the absolute PM of
NGC 6544. Isochrone fitting on the clean and differential reddening corrected
cluster color magnitude diagram yields an age of 11-13 Gyr, and
metallicity [Fe/H] = -1.5 dex, in agreement with previous studies restricted to
the cluster core. We were able to derive the cluster orbit assuming an
axisymmetric model of the Galaxy and conclude that NGC 6544 is likely a halo
GC. We have not detected tidal tail signatures associated to the cluster, but a
remarkable elongation in the galactic center direction has been found. The
precision achieved in the PM determination also allows us to separate bulge
stars from foreground disk stars, enabling the kinematical selection of bona
fide bulge stars across the whole survey area. Our results show that VVV data
is perfectly suitable for this kind of analysis.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted in A&
The forward kinematics of doubly-planar Gough-Stewart platforms and the position analysis of strips of tetrahedra
The final publication is available at link.springer.comA strip of tetrahedra is a tetrahedron-tetrahedron truss where any tetrahedron has two neighbors except those in the extremes which have only one. The problem of finding all the possible lengths for an edge in the strip compatible with a given distance imposed between the strip end-points has been revealed of relevance due to the large number of possible applications. In this paper, this is applied to solve the forward kinematics of 6-6 Gough-Stewart platforms with planar base and moving platform, a problem which is known to have up to 40 solutions (20 if we do not consider mirror configurations with respect to the base as different solutions).Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Uniform current in graphene strip with zigzag edges
Graphene exhibits zero-gap massless-Dirac fermion and zero density of states
at E = 0. These particles form localized states called edge states on finite
width strip with zigzag edges at E = 0. Naively thinking, one may expect that
current is also concentrated at the edge, but Zarbo and Nikolic numerically
obtained a result that the current density shows maximum at the center of the
strip. We derive a rigorous relation for the current density, and clarify the
reason why the current density of edge state has a maximum at the center.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; added references and corrected typos, to be

Improving the magnetic heating by disaggregating nanoparticles
Recently, potential applications of the magnetic heating for heterogeneous catalysis or organic synthesis have been reported. As these new applications are not limited by biocompatibility requirements, a wide range of possibilities for non-aqueous colloidal nanoparticles with enhanced magnetic properties is open. In this work, manganese and cobalt ferrite nanoparticles are synthesized by co-precipitation method with average particle size around 12 nm. The particles are either coated with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAOH) and dispersed in water or with oleic acid (OA) and dispersed in hexane to produce aggregated or disaggregated nanoparticles, respectively. It is observed that the particle disaggregation improves significantly the heating efficiency from 12 to 96 W/g in the case of cobalt ferrite, and from 120 to 413 W/g for the manganese ferrite. The main responsible for this improvement is the reduction of hydrodynamic volume that allows a faster Brownian relaxation. This work also discusses the relevance of the size distribution
Division Algebras and Extended N=2,4,8 SuperKdVs
The first example of an N=8 supersymmetric extension of the KdV equation is
here explicitly constructed. It involves 8 bosonic and 8 fermionic fields. It
corresponds to the unique N=8 solution based on a generalized hamiltonian
dynamics with (generalized) Poisson brackets given by the Non-associative N=8
Superconformal Algebra. The complete list of inequivalent classes of
parametric-dependent N=3 and N=4 superKdVs obtained from the ``Non-associative
N=8 SCA" is also furnished. Furthermore, a fundamental domain characterizing
the class of inequivalent N=4 superKdVs based on the "minimal N=4 SCA" is
given.Comment: 14 pages, LaTe
