    DEVELOPMENT OF A TL-3 F-SHAPE TEMPORARY CONCRETE MEDIAN BARRIER

    A temporary concrete median barrier (CMB) was designed and tested for compliance under the Test Level 3 (TL-3) guidelines specified in the Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features, National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report No. 350. The barrier is built to the new metric standards and has a traditional pin and loop configuration for interconnection. The objective of this research project was to develop and evaluate a standardized, temporary concrete barrier design while addressing the concerns for safety, economy, structural integrity, constructability, ease of installation, and maintenance. The resulting F-shape barrier segment is 3,800-mm long, a length that reduced the number of connections while limiting the weight of the barriers to ease handling. Full-scale crash testing demonstrated several critical design features. First, the connections need to be tight initially as practicable to limit deformation and rotation of the barriers,. Secondly, the pin needs to restrain the longitudinal barrier forces. Full-scale compliance testing of the final design demonstrated that the barrier was capable of successfully redirecting the 2000-kg vehicle. The vehicle demonstrated significant roll after contact with the barrier, which is evidenced in a majority of other concrete barrier tests. This barrier provides economical work zone protection applicable in a variety of situations, where TL-3 test criteria is warranted

    BISMA - Fast and accurate bisulfite sequencing data analysis of individual clones from unique and repetitive sequences

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Bisulfite sequencing is a popular method to analyze DNA methylation patterns at high resolution. A region of interest is targeted by PCR and about 20-50 subcloned DNA molecules are usually analyzed, to determine the methylation status at single CpG sites and molecule resolution.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The BISMA (Bisulfite Sequencing DNA Methylation Analysis) software for analysis of primary bisulfite sequencing data implements sequencing data extraction and enhanced data processing, quality controls, analysis and presentation of the methylation state. It uses an improved strategy for detection of clonal molecules and accurate CpG site detection and it supports for the first time analysis of repetitive sequences.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>BISMA works highly automated but still provides the user full control over all steps of the analysis. The BISMA software is freely available as an online tool for academic purposes for the analysis of bisulfite sequencing data from both unique and repetitive sequences <url>http://biochem.jacobs-university.de/BDPC/BISMA/</url>.</p

    TIME DILATION CONTROLS FOR CAMERAS

    A computing device (e.g., a mobile phone, camera, tablet computer, etc.) may include a camera for capturing/recording video and may present a user interface at a display device (e.g., a presence-sensitive screen) from which a user can interact with the camera of the computing device to change or adjust time dilation effects (making a video record such that it plays faster than it actually occurred, or to record a video that will play slower than it occurred). For example, the user interface may provide a selector to adjusting a playback rate of captured video and a selector for adjusting a time dilation multiplier. When capturing video, the user interface may provide an indicator that shows the recording duration, and the playback duration of the video. This way, a computing device may provide a user with a concise way of controlling and visualizing time dilation effects

    Choices between money and hyper-palatable food: Choice impulsivity and eating behavior

The study tested whether choice impulsivity, termed delay discounting, may be related to food generally, or may be specific to hyper-palatable foods (HPF). The study also determined whether a discounting task with choices between money and food may have utility in predicting obesity-related outcomes. Method: Participants (N = 284) completed a task that assessed choices between smaller reward available immediately and larger reward available later. Single commodity conditions presented choices between amounts of HPF, non-HPF, or money (e.g., HPF now vs. HPF later). Cross-commodity conditions presented choices between money and food commodities (e.g., money now vs. HPF later; money now vs. non-HPF later). Results: There were no significant differences in discounting of HPF and non-HPF in single commodity conditions (Mean ln[k] difference = .40, p = .058). In the cross-commodity conditions holding money constant as the immediate reward, individuals discounted HPF significantly less than non-HPF (Mean ln[k] difference = .92; p = .0001). In regression analyses, individuals with excess HPF intake, greater HPF craving, and higher BMIs were more likely to choose HPF immediately, when money was the delayed reward (p values = .003 to .008). Conclusions: Choice impulsivity may be specific to foods that are hyper-palatable. Results suggest that individuals with excess HPF intake, higher HPF craving, and higher BMIs may exhibit a general tendency toward impulsive decision making that may be exacerbated in an obesogenic environment that provides wide access to HPF

    Bisulfite sequencing Data Presentation and Compilation (BDPC) web server—a useful tool for DNA methylation analysis

    During bisulfite genomic sequencing projects large amount of data are generated. The Bisulfite sequencing Data Presentation and Compilation (BDPC) web interface (http://biochem.jacobs-university.de/BDPC/) automatically analyzes bisulfite datasets prepared using the BiQ Analyzer. BDPC provides the following output: (i) MS-Excel compatible files compiling for each PCR product (a) the average methylation level, the number of clones analyzed and the percentage of CG sites analyzed (which is an indicator of data quality), (b) the methylation level observed at each CG site and (c) the methylation level of each clone. (ii) A methylation overview table compiling the methylation of all amplicons in all tissues. (iii) Publication grade figures in PNG format showing the methylation pattern for each PCR product embedded in an HMTL file summarizing the methylation data, the DNA sequence and some basic statistics. (iv) A summary file compiling the methylation pattern of different tissues, which is linked to the individual HTML result files, and can be directly used for presentation of the data in the internet. (v) A condensed file, containing all primary data in simplified format for further downstream data analysis and (vi) a custom track file for display of the results in the UCSC genome browser

    Nemesis Reconsidered

    The hypothesis of a companion object (Nemesis) orbiting the Sun was motivated by the claim of a terrestrial extinction periodicity, thought to be mediated by comet showers. The orbit of a distant companion to the Sun is expected to be perturbed by the Galactic tidal field and encounters with passing stars, which will induce variation in the period. We examine the evidence for the previously proposed periodicity, using two modern, greatly improved paleontological datasets of fossil biodiversity. We find that there is a narrow peak at 27 My in the cross-spectrum of extinction intensity time series between these independent datasets. This periodicity extends over a time period nearly twice that for which it was originally noted. An excess of extinction events are associated with this periodicity at 99% confidence. In this sense we confirm the originally noted feature in the time series for extinction. However, we find that it displays extremely regular timing for about 0.5 Gy. The regularity of the timing compared with earlier calculations of orbital perturbation would seem to exclude the Nemesis hypothesis as a causal factor.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Societ
